With an aging population comes a greater incidence of colorectal cancer and a corresponding need for surgical resection in the geriatric population. This heterogeneous group of patients may benefit from multidisciplinary pre-operative evaluation and optimization, prehabilitation, enhanced recovery protocols, and a minimally invasive approach to resection. Concerns regarding the ability of the older patient to tolerate the physiologic demands of pneumoperitoneum have not been validated.

Background: Insufficient perfusion to anastomoses in colorectal surgery is known to lead to complications. This study aims to evaluate whether routine use of fluorescence angiography (FA) alters the incidence of anastomotic leaks after colorectal surgery.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 554 colorectal resections with and without the use of intraoperative fluorescence angiography.
