Using high resolution autoradiographic techniques, the distribution of radioactivity in forebrain and brainstem was assessed after IV injection of 3H-impramine or 3H-desipramine. Results were compared with regional binding of the drugs to brain sections in vitro. Similar topographic binding of 3H-imipramine and 3H-desipramine was observed in vitro among brain regions, except in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus and locus coeruleus, where binding was greater for 3H-desipramine.

Following death of the rats, a major portion of the radioactivity in administered [3H]cholesteryl ester-high-density lipoprotein rapidly appeared in less dense [3H]cholesteryl ester-lipoproteins and was isolated with the low-density lipoprotein fraction. The specific activity of the esterified cholesterol in the product lipoproteins found with the low-density lipoproteins exceeded that of the precursor high-density lipoproteins.

Serological evidence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection was sought before, and 10 days and 4 weeks after HSG, using the single-antigen whole-inclusion immunofluorescence (WIF) test for species-specific antibody and the complement fixation test (CFT) for group antibody. Chlamydia antigen was detected using an ELISA.

Beta adrenergic and 5-HT2 receptors were evaluated at specific stages of the forced swim test with and without imipramine treatment. Rapid changes in receptor binding were observed in saline-treated rats during specific stages of the test.

First-catch early morning urine samples from patients attending a genitourinary medicine clinic were tested by three different enzyme immunoassays. The results suggest significant differences in the sensitivities and specificities of the different assays. The direct visualization of elementary bodies in urine deposits by direct immunofluorescence was used as the "gold standard," using a monoclonal antibody with a different epitope specificity from those of antibodies used in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

Investigations were conducted to record the following morphological parameters from hearts of guinea pigs (alb/Jena, inbred strain): absolute and relative heart weight as well as weights of left and right ventricles and of the interventricular septum. Correlations are described and discussed between the values recorded as well as between those values and body weight and changes in the course of ageing. The point is made that investigations of this kind are helpful in describing heart development in its totality and may provide better prerequisites for appraisal of pathological conditions.

Neuroanatomically selective down-regulation of [125I]pindolol binding was found after chronic imipramine treatment. Subdivisions of the amygdala and hippocampus and discrete cortical regions were differentially affected.

A mu-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting chlamydia-specific IgM was developed by use of the heat stable, lipopolysaccharide group-specific antigen and an alkaline phosphatase-labelled anti-chlamydia group-specific monoclonal antibody conjugate. The test was used to study the serological response in chlamydial respiratory tract infection among patients with acute respiratory tract symptoms in Cambridgeshire during the past 7 years. Results were compared with those of the complement fixation test (CFT) in routine use as well as those of a whole inclusion indirect immunofluorescence (WIF) test for IgM.

The drugs tested were imipramine, amitriptyline, pargyline and nomifensine. The regional pattern of beta adrenergic or 5-HT2 receptor binding changes induced after chronic treatment with these antidepressants was not uniform.

In unlesioned rats, chronic haloperidol treatment (15 days) resulted in an increase in D2-dopamine receptor density, as measured with [3H]spiperone, in the nucleus accumbens and in the caudate-putamen. Rats treated as adults with 6-OHDA responded to chronic haloperidol similarly to controls.

Monkey plasma was incubated with [14C]- or [3H]cholesteryl ester, and radiolabeled low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) were isolated by ultracentrifugation. Animals received labeled LDL or HDL.

As a measure of adaptation, brain beta adrenergic receptors were assayed using [3H]dihydroalprenolol [( 3H]DHA) binding to brain membranes from rats that were processed in the forced swim test. The combination of swim stress and imipramine treatment antagonized immobility induced by forced swimming and resulted in a reduction in [3H] DHA binding to membranes from forebrain preparations which did not include the corpus striatum.

The organism was identified in McCoy cell monolayers by staining the intracytoplasmic chlamydial inclusions with a fluorescent antibody technique, and serological evidence of chlamydial infection in cats was obtained by indirect immunofluorescence. The possible role of C psittaci as an ocular, upper respiratory and reproductive tract pathogen in cats is discussed.
