Gastric carcinoids in patients with hypergastrinemia.

Background: Hypergastrinemia in patients with pernicious anemia is a major regulator contributing to enterochromaffin-cell hyperplasia and, ultimately, to gastric carcinoids.

Study Design: Between 1990 and 2003, we studied 8 women and 10 men with pernicious anemia and gastric carcinoids; their mean age was 50 years. Serum gastrin levels ranged from 740 to 4,000 pg/mL (mean 1,000 pg/mL).

Some considerations for management of choledochal cysts.

Background: There are five types of choledochal cysts, which are anomalies that involve intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile ducts, or both. These lesions are found most frequently in patients who are Asian, female, infants but are recognized with increasing frequency in adults.

Methods: We have managed 16 patients with this anomaly.

Treatment of ampullary villous adenomas that may harbor carcinoma.

Villous adenoma of the ampulla of Vater is a rare tumor. It is a deceptive tumor because it is a premalignant lesion and biopsies of the lesion are false negative in 25% to 56% of patients. The primary focus of this report is 23 of 30 patients with villous adenoma of the ampulla of Vater who underwent Whipple operations.
