Trends in Retraction of Orthopaedic Research Articles.

Background: Despite the use of in-depth peer-review processes, there occasionally are issues with published manuscripts that require retraction. The purpose of the present study was to explore the reasons for the retraction of orthopaedic research articles, with consideration of the journal impact factor and the orthopaedic subspecialty.

Methods: In 2023, a database search was conducted for retracted papers written in the English language in the orthopaedic literature.

Sleeve gastrectomy prior to primary total hip and total knee arthroplasty is associated with increased risk of early complications.

Aims: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between prior sleeve gastrectomy in patients undergoing primary total hip and knee arthroplasty, and 90-day complications, incidence of revision arthroplasty, and patient-reported outcome scores at final follow-up.

Methods: This is a retrospective, single-centre analysis. Patients undergoing primary hip or knee arthroplasty with a prior sleeve gastrectomy were eligible for inclusion (n = 80 patients).

Background: Patients and caregivers may experience immense distress when receiving the diagnosis of a primary musculoskeletal malignancy and subsequently turn to internet resources for more information. It is not clear whether these resources, including Google and ChatGPT, offer patients information that is readable, a measure of how easy text is to understand. Since many patients turn to Google and artificial intelligence resources for healthcare information, we thought it was important to ascertain whether the information they find is readable and easy to understand.

Outcomes of Lower Extremity Total Joint Arthroplasty in Patients With Skeletal Dysplasia: A Systematic Review.

Background: Patients with genetic skeletal dysplasias often require lower extremity total joint arthroplasty (TJA) due to early joint degeneration; however, little data exists regarding the outcomes of TJA in this population. Our purpose was to review the literature to determine the complication rates, revision rates, implant survivorship, and patient-reported outcomes of total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty (THA) in those with genetic skeletal dysplasias.

Methods: A systematic literature review of online databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) was conducted.

Background: The patient-reported outcomes measurement information system (PROMIS) was developed by investigators funded by the National Institutes of Health as a standardized means of directly assessing the patients' perspectives across domains. PROMIS domains include physical function, pain, fatigue, emotional distress, and social health. Various studies have reported increased utilization of PROMIS in research articles in specific specialties; however, the extent to which PROMIS has been employed in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery remains unclear.

Introduction: Division chiefs play crucial leadership, administrative, and instructive roles within orthopedic subspecialties. The purpose of this study is to investigate the demographic and academic characteristics of division chiefs of adult reconstruction at fellowship institutions in the United States.

Methods: Adult reconstruction fellowship programs were identified using the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons database.

Quantifying the Performance of Professional Athletes Following Traumatic Tibial Fractures.

Introduction: A tibial fracture is an uncommon, yet severe injury that occurs in professional athletes within all major sports leagues. These injuries are often debilitating for professional athletes and can require extensive rehabilitation prior to returning to play. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of a tibial fracture on athletic performance in all four major United States sports leagues.

Background: Retraction of scientific publications is an important check on scientific misconduct and serves to maintain the integrity of the scientific literature. The present study aims to examine the prevalence, trends, and characteristics of retracted spine literature across basic science and clinical spine literature.

Is Morbid Obesity a Modifiable Risk Factor in Patients Who Have Severe Knee Osteoarthritis and do Not Have a Formal Perioperative Optimization Program?

Background: Obesity is considered a modifiable risk factor prior to total knee arthroplasty (TKA); however, little data support this hypothesis. Our purpose was to evaluate patients who have a body mass index (BMI) >40 presenting for TKA to determine the incidence of: (1) patients who achieved successful weight loss through nutritional modification or bariatric surgery and (2) patients who underwent TKA over the study period without the presence of a formal optimization program.

Background Robotic instruments are increasingly being used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The adoption of robotics has allowed surgeons a new level of precision and facilitated the adoption of a kinematic approach in TKA. We sought to examine one surgeon's transition from a traditional mechanical alignment technique to a modified kinematic approach by comparing short-term recovery outcomes of robotic TKA patients with those who underwent traditionally instrumented TKAs.

The Clinicopathologic Spectrum of Membranous Nephropathy with Lupus-Like Features.

Introduction: The pathologic features of membranous lupus nephritis (MLN) are occasionally encountered in secondary membranous nephropathy (sMN) without overt clinical evidence of systemic lupus erythematosus. Moreover, some sMN with lupus-like features (lupus-like membranous nephropathy [LL-MN]) have a clinical presentation more typical of primary membranous nephropathy (pMN). Based on the confounding clinical and pathologic presentation, it is unclear how to categorize and treat these patients.
