Twenty-one patients with fractures of the ipsilateral femur and tibia were treated at Boston City Hospital from 1982 through 1987. Fourteen (67%) of the 21 patients sustained a total of 17 open fractures (76% of which were grade II or III wounds). Over 50% of the patients suffered concomitant ipsilateral knee injuries.

The increased importance of multicausal diseases of poultry in the present time is due to a better control and prevention of the monocausal diseases and epidemics predominant in the past. This development is supported by the intensive methods of modern poultry husbandry, the high stocking densities and the improved performance of the poultry by genetic selection. The biochemical, immunological and physicochemical properties of the beta-lactamase OHIO-1 were compared to those of four beta-lactamases commonly found in Klebsiella pneumoniae: SHV-1, SHV-3 and the beta-lactamases of strains GN 11-03 and GN 422. The substrate profile of SHV-1, OHIO-1 and of the beta-lactamases GN 11-03 and GN 422 were similar, while that of SHV-3 appeared comparable to that of the extended spectrum SHV-2. Moreover, anti-TEM-1 serum inactivated OHIO-1 as well as SHV-1 and the beta-lactamases of strains GN 11-03 and GN 422.

A clinical isolate of Escherichia coli, strain CB-134, recovered in 1986 from an abdominal abscess, exhibited resistance to penams, oxyimino-beta-lactams including broad-spectrum cephalosporins (cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ceftazidime), and aztreonam but remained susceptible to cephamycins (cefoxitin, cefotetan) and to moxalactam and imipenem. A summary of 51 cases of vehicular accident showing abdomino-pelvic trauma, along with associated other regional injuries, were studied at the Department of Forensic Medicine at MAM College and Associated Hospitals in New Delhi during 1986. The purpose of this study was to compare the physiological, sensory, and exercise performance responses to ingestion of 6% glucose, 6% fructose, and 6% sucrose solutions during cycling exercise. Twelve subjects completed three sessions consisting of 115 min of intermittent cycle ergometer exercise at 65-80% of VO2max followed by a timed performance bout requiring the completion of 600 pedal revolutions. Nationally black patients are overrepresented in public psychiatric institutions and are more likely than white patients to be committed involuntarily. This study of patients from 12 treatment units in the Chicago area, where these patterns were also true, compared the functioning of 227 acute admissions grouped by race (white or black) and admission status (voluntary or involuntary). Patients were assessed by highly trained independent observers using objective measures of dangerous behavior and disability levels, the relevant classes of functioning based on common principles underlying commitment statutes.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether high intensity weight lifting exercise produces elevations of urinary 3-methylhistidine (3-MH), serum creatine kinase activity (CK), and serum myoglobin concentration (MY), and whether trained weight lifters differed in such responses when compared to a group of untrained subjects. A cell-associated bacteriocinlike substance with an approximate molecular weight of 78,000 was isolated from an oral isolate of Propionibacterium acnes. The substance was bacteriostatic and was active against both gram-positive and gram-negative anaerobes. Lysozyme inhibited the activity of the bacteriocinlike substance at low ionic strength.

A strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae K25 resistant to newer beta-lactam drugs was isolated in clusters in five hospitals in the Paris area. The MICs of ceftazidime and aztreonam (greater than or equal to 128 mg/l) were higher than that of cefotaxime (16 mg/l) for the strain but, when measured in the presence of clavulanic acid, they were less than or equal to 1 mg/l. The human vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) gene also encodes peptides histidine methionine (PHM) which has substantial sequence homology with VIP. Both are present in nerve fibers in the human ileum and circulate in greatly increased concentrations in patients with the watery diarrhoea syndrome. The zymogram technique was applied to a beta-lactamase neutralization assay with anti-TEM-1 and anti-TEM-2 sera. Both were shown to contain neutralizing antibodies directed towards various beta-lactamases of Gram-negative bacteria.
