Effect of spatial context on perceived walking direction.

Contextual modulation occurs for many aspects of high-level vision but is relatively unexplored for the perception of walking direction. In a recent study, we observed an effect of the temporal context on perceived walking direction. Here, we examined the spatial contextual modulation by measuring the perceived direction of a target point-light walker in the presence of two flanker walkers, one on each side.

Colour information biases facial age estimation and reduces inter-observer variability.

Age estimation is a perceptual task that people perform automatically and effortlessly on a daily basis. Colour has been identified as one of the facial cues that contributes to age perception. To investigate further the role of colour in age perception, we manipulated the chromatic content of facial images holistically.

Adaptation to walking direction in biological motion.

The direction that we see another person walking provides us with an important cue to their intentions, but little is known about how the brain encodes walking direction across a neuronal population. The current study used an adaptation technique to investigate the sensory coding of perceived walking direction. We measured perceived walking direction of point-light stimuli before and after adaptation, and found that adaptation to a specific walking direction resulted in repulsive perceptual aftereffects.

The long and short of it? A novel geometric illusion.

Here we present what we believe to be a novel geometric illusion where identical lines are perceived as being of differing lengths. Participants were asked to report which of the two parallel rows of horizontal lines contained the longer individual lines (two lines on one row and 15 on the other). Using an adaptive staircase we adjusted the length of the lines on the row containing two to estimate the point of subjective equality (PSE).

A speed-of-play limit reduces gambling expenditure in an online roulette game: Results of an online experiment.

UK online casino games are presently not subject to any limitations on speed-of-play or stakes. One recent policy proposal is to ensure that no online casino game can be played faster than its in-person equivalent. Another policy proposal is to limit the maximum stakes on online casino games to £2, to match the current stake limit on electronic gambling machines.

A Parametric Framework to Generate Visual Illusions Using Python.

Visual illusions are fascinating phenomena that have been used and studied by artists and scientists for centuries, leading to important discoveries about the neurocognitive underpinnings of perception, consciousness, and neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia or autism. Surprisingly, despite their historical and theoretical importance as psychological stimuli, there is no dedicated software, nor consistent approach, to generate illusions in a systematic fashion. Instead, scientists have to craft them by hand in an idiosyncratic fashion, or use pre-made images not tailored for the specific needs of their studies.

The need for formal reflexivity in conservation science.

Conservation issues are often complicated by sociopolitical controversies that reflect competing philosophies and values regarding natural systems, animals, and people. Effective conservation outcomes require managers to engage myriad influences (social, cultural, political, and economic, as well as ecological). The contribution of conservation scientists who generate the information on which solutions rely is constrained if they are unable to acknowledge how personal values and disciplinary paradigms influence their research and conclusions.

COVID-19 in LMICs: The Need to Place Stigma Front and Centre to Its Response.

COVID-19 has caused unprecedented health, economic and societal impacts across the world, including many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The pandemic and its fallout have laid bare deep-seated social and economic inequalities with marginalised groups being at greater risk of infection and being disproportionately affected by containment measures and their socioeconomic consequences. Stigma is a central element to such inequalities but remains largely overlooked in the debate on the response to COVID-19, including in LMICs.

PyTrack: An end-to-end analysis toolkit for eye tracking.

Eye tracking is a widely used tool for behavioral research in the field of psychology. With technological advancement, we now have specialized eye-tracking devices that offer high sampling rates, up to 2000 Hz, and allow for measuring eye movements with high accuracy. They also offer high spatial resolution, which enables the recording of very small movements, like drifts and microsaccades.

Splitting time: Sound-induced illusory visual temporal fission and fusion.

Auditory stimuli have been shown to alter visual temporal perception. For example, illusory temporal order is perceived when an auditory tone cues one side of space prior to the onset of simultaneously presented visual stimuli. Competing accounts attempt to explain such effects.

Inter-segment complementarity in orbiviruses: a driver for co-ordinated genome packaging in the Reoviridae?

The process by which eukaryotic viruses with segmented genomes select a complete set of genome segments for packaging into progeny virus particles is not understood. In this study a model based on the association of genome segments through specific RNA-RNA interactions driven by base pairing was formalized and tested in the Orbivirus genus of the Reoviridae family. A strategy combining screening of the genomic sequences for inter-segment complementarity with direct functional testing of inter-segment RNA-RNA interactions using reverse genetics is described in the type species of the Orbivirus genus, Bluetongue virus (BTV).

Desirable rights: same-sex sexual subjectivities, socio-economic transformations, global flows and boundaries--in India and beyond.

Sexual rights are increasingly and unevenly advanced internationally as constitutive of progressive legal possibilities for same-sex desiring subjects. Legislative progress in this area has taken place in the context of recognition of same-sex sexual subjects within the globalising flow of neo-liberal political-economic ideologies in some parts of the word, and resurgent homophobia as a countervailing trend elsewhere (or indeed even within the same context). Ambivalent responses to sexual rights praxis in people's day-to-day lives indicate complex relationships between sexual subjectivity, economy, law, the state, and people's most intimate aspirations.

Rights and representations: querying the male-to-male sexual subject in India.

Same-sex sexualities in India have been portrayed in research and activism as socially marginal and minoritarian. Whilst proceeding from a commitment to the political utility of such a view, this paper questions such a standpoint. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in different sites, the paper considers male-to-male sexualities as enacted and implicated in the production of ostensibly heteronormative spaces.

Surfactant protein-B polymorphisms and mortality in the acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Objective: To determine whether polymorphisms of the surfactant protein B gene may be associated with increased mortality in patients with the acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Design: A prospective cohort study.

Setting: Four adult intensive care units at a tertiary academic medical center.

Objective: To investigate the association of exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with DNA damage and oxidative stress in boilermakers exposed to welding fumes.

Methods: Forty-one workers were monitored over 24 hours during which baseline, postshift, bedtime, and next morning measurements were collected.

Objective: Although a number of studies have reported elevated levels of markers of myocardial necrosis among critically ill patients, the association between these markers and outcome remains poorly studied in patients with lung injury. 'Conceiving kothis': men who have sex with men in India and the cultural subject of HIV prevention.

HIV prevention with men who have sex with men in India has, in large part, been premised on the reification of "cultural categories"--kothi being among the most popularized terms in this context, broadly designating men who have a feminine sense of self and who enact "passive" sexual roles. Countering prevailing research trends, this article explores ways in which local, national, and global processes inform contemporary kothi sexual subjectivities--disrupting simplistic perspectives on the cultural coherence of the category. Derivative uses of anthropological knowledge in public health and activist milieux are seen to have propounded limited representations of men who have sex with men in India.

pH increase observed in exhaled breath condensate from welding fume exposure.

Objectives: We sought to investigate changes in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) pH in healthy workers exposed to welding fumes.

Methods: Fourteen exposed participants (median age 39 years, 5 smokers) and 8 nonexposed controls (median age 44 years, 1 smoker) were monitored at an apprentice welding school. Exposure to fine particulate matter less than 2.

Linkage analysis of genetic loci for kyphoscoliosis on chromosomes 5p13, 13q13.3, and 13q32.

Kyphoscoliosis, a three-dimensional deformity of spinal growth, is characterized by a curvature in the coronal plane (scoliosis) in conjunction with thoracic kyphosis in excess of the normal range in the sagittal plane. We identified kyphoscoliosis within members of seven families (53 individuals) originally ascertained as part of a large collaborative study of familial idiopathic scoliosis. Model-independent linkage analysis of a genome-wide microsatellite screen identified areas suggestive of linkage on chromosomes 2q22, 5p13, 13q, and 17q11.

Description of the data from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) and single-nucleotide polymorphism genotyping for Genetic Analysis Workshop 14.

The data provided to the Genetic Analysis Workshop 14 (GAW 14) was the result of a collaboration among several different groups, catalyzed by Elizabeth Pugh from The Center for Inherited Disease Research (CIDR) and the organizers of GAW 14, Jean MacCluer and Laura Almasy. The DNA, phenotypic characterization, and microsatellite genomic survey were provided by the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA), a nine-site national collaboration funded by the National Institute of Alcohol and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) with the overarching goal of identifying and characterizing genes that affect the susceptibility to develop alcohol dependence and related phenotypes. CIDR, Affymetrix, and Illumina provided single-nucleotide polymorphism genotyping of a large subset of the COGA subjects.

Clinical predictors of and mortality in acute respiratory distress syndrome: potential role of red cell transfusion.

Objective: Clinical predictors for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have been studied in few prospective studies. Although transfusions are common in the intensive care unit, the role of submassive transfusion in non-trauma-related ARDS has not been studied. We describe here the clinical predictors of ARDS risk and mortality including the role of red cell transfusion.
