Heavy metal poisoning can cause a variety of hematologic disorders. Exposure to heavy metals is ubiquitous in the industrial environment and must be considered in the differential diagnosis of many types of anemia. The heavy metals most commonly associated with hematologic toxicity are arsenic and its derivative arsine, copper, gold, lead, and zinc.

The standardized fluorescence intensity (FI) of immunostained normal and malignant B-cells was measured as a method of evaluating cellular heterogeneity between lymphoid malignancies. Mature B-cells from peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of different individuals demonstrated characteristic peaks of FI when specific monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) were employed in standard flow cytometric procedures. Malignant cells from patients with lymphoid leukemias demonstrated FI that differed from that of normal B-cells with various MoAbs and that differed among categories of leukemia.

To learn about factors, that influence a physician's decision making, a mail survey was conducted asking physicians about their preferences for radical mastectomy vs. local excision plus irradiation, and for adjuvant chemotherapy vs. no adjuvant treatment for two hypothetical women with operable, clinical stage I breast cancer - one 35 years old and the other 60 years old.

Using monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) and dual-parameter flow cytometric techniques, bone marrow mononuclear cells (MMC) from patients with resurgent hyperplasia were analyzed for their coexpression of HLe-1 (T200) and antigens normally associated with particular stages of B cell differentiation. The marrow from those with resurgent hyperplasia contained increased numbers of B cell precursors in multiple stages of differentiation compared to controls, thus providing a useful model system for studies of B cell differentiation. These studies indicate that the quantitative expression of T200 is differentiation-related on normal and malignant B cells and B cell precursors.

Rapid, convenient and non-isotopic nucleic-acid hybridization methods are needed for this technology to have practical use in clinical diagnostic tests. A method for hybridization of RNA with a DNA probe in solution followed by capture and measurement of the hybrid is described. DNA probes complementary to 23S rRNAs from Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis were labeled with a photoactivable biotin reagent.

Electrocoagulation of 58 intraoral lesions (1 to 6.5 cm in diameter) resulted in a three-year absolute disease-free survival rate of 59% (34/58). During the 20-year study, 43 (74%) of the 58 patients were cured.

Quantitative differences in HLe-1 expression were studied on normal lymphocytes and lymphoblasts of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). A relationship was found between quantitative antigen expression and therapeutic outcome. Alterations in fluorescence intensity (FI) were demonstrated using quantitative flow cytometric methods and the monoclonal antibody (MoAb) anti HLe-1 (T200).

Multispectral images of the basaltic surface of Venus obtained by Venera 13 were processed to remove the effects of orange-colored incident radiation resulting from interactions with the thick Venusian atmosphere. At visible wavelengths the surface of Venus appears dark and without significant color. High-temperature laboratory reflectance spectra of basaltic materials indicate that these results are consistent with mineral assemblages bearing either ferric or ferrous iron.

Serial blood samples were obtained from 16 Standardbred foals from time of birth to postpartum day 28. Sera were obtained and analyzed for gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), aspartate transaminase, and immunoglobulin (Ig) G. Presuckle colostrum from the respective mares of these foals was analyzed for GGT activity.

Basset Hound Hereditary Thrombopathy (BHT) is an autosomally inherited disorder of platelet function characterized by a thrombasthenia-like defect in aggregation but normal clot retraction. Glycoprotein IIb-IIIa (GP IIb-IIIa) is detectable in BHT platelets but may be functionally defective. In order to further characterize this potential model for human Glanzmann's thrombasthenia, contact reactivity of BHT platelets was studied by whole mount electron microscopy.

Transseptal, transsphenoidal surgery in British Columbia is performed as a joint procedure between otolaryngology and neurosurgery. We analysed the 84 procedures performed on 78 patients between 1978 and 1983 at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver.

There are numerous genetic diseases influencing reproduction and periparturient care in dogs including such disorders as anasarca, cleft palate, swimmers, congenital heart disease, and the various conditions that cause excessive bleeding. It is probable that all breeds of dogs are at risk for these or other traits that influence whelping and neonatal care. Therefore, genetic counseling should be considered as an important aspect of prenatal and pediatric veterinary medicine.

Because of a thrombasthenia-like platelet aggregation defect, platelets from dogs affected with Basset Hound Hereditary Thrombopathy were compared to normal control dog platelets by three different techniques in order to assess platelet membrane glycoprotein content. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis (CIE), two-dimensional nonreduced-reduced electrophoresis (NR-R), and O'Farrell two-dimensional electrophoresis were used for the assays. CIE and NR-R gels detected no differences between affected Basset Hound and control dog platelets.

This article discusses various therapeutic agents that have been used in the treatment of calf diarrhea, such as antibiotics, modulators of intestinal motility, gastrointestinal protectants and absorbents, astringents, agents affecting secretion, steroids, antiadhesives, antitoxins, and monoclonal antibodies. The roles of nutrition and the administration of colostrum following onset of diarrhea are also discussed.
