Quantitative Analysis of Sexuality and Relationship Education in Inclusive Higher Education: Brief Report.

Inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) programs support adults with intellectual disabilities' participation in higher education. Students in IPSE programs may have limited knowledge of sexuality, relationships, and social skills, which can be addressed through sexuality and relationship education (SRE). This project evaluated the effect of the Positive Choices© curriculum on the SRE knowledge of 7 students attending an IPSE program in the southeastern United States.

Relationship between medical programme progress test performance and surgical clinical attachment timing and performance.

Purpose: Progress tests (PTs) assess applied knowledge, promote knowledge integration, and facilitate retention. Clinical attachments catalyse learning through an appropriate learning context. The relationship between PT results and clinical attachment sequence and performance are under-explored.

Introduction: Few studies have examined the comprehensive impact of adaptive exercise interventions across multiple functional domains (i.e., physical and cognitive health) in adults with developmental disabilities (DD).

Trends in medical students' health over 5 years: Does a wellbeing curriculum make a difference?

Background: Trends in New Zealand (NZ) medical students' health and the influence of a wellbeing curricula are unknown.

Methods: The author's collected self-report data from NZ medical students on 'Graduation Day' from 2014 to 2018, using a serial cross-sectional survey design with validated scales assessing psychological health, stigma, coping, and lifestyle. Comparisons were made with NZ general population same-age peers.

The Cognitive Difficulties Scale (CDS): Psychometric Characteristics in a Clinical Referral Sample.

Objective: To evaluate the psychometric characteristics of the Cognitive Difficulties Scale (CDS), a 39-item Likert-type self-report instrument that requires a fifth grade reading level. The CDS is a popular instrument that has been shown to predict cognitive decline in older persons.

Method: Participants were 512 consecutive outpatient referrals (71% women, mean age 60.

The impact of emotional factors on subjective cognitive complaints and memory test performance has been a topic of extensive research, produced conflicting results. Investigators typically used self-report inventories that lack measures of response bias. Studies have also neglected to use performance validity tests (PVTs) to screen participants for incomplete effort.

Personality preferences for radiation therapy students in New Zealand.

Introduction: This study investigated the learning styles and personality preferences of undergraduate Bachelor of Radiation Therapy (BRT) students at the University of Otago, Wellington in New Zealand from 2014 to 2018. The implications of these findings for radiation therapy education and the profession were also explored.

Methods: All students enrolled in the first year of the BRT degree during this time were invited to participate in the research.

Direct-to-Consumer Advertising for Cancer Centers and Institutes: Ethical Dilemmas and Practical Implications.

In the United States, many cancer centers advertise their clinical services directly to the public. Although there are potential public benefits from such advertising, including increased patient awareness of treatment options and improved access to care and clinical trials, there is also potential for harm through misinformation, provision of false hope, inappropriate use of health care resources, and disruption in doctor-patient relationships. Although patient education through advertising is appropriate, misleading patients in the name of gaining market share, boosting profits, or even boosting trial accrual is not.

An enhanced delayed recognition measure for the Logical Memory subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale - IV.

We provide a supplemental measure based on the Logical Memory (LM) subtest of the Wechsler Memory Scale - IV (Wechsler, 2008) to assist in distinguishing deficient memory storage from compromised retrieval operations. A 20-item five-option multiple choice delayed recognition test for the LM stories is described, followed by descriptive data based on a normative sample of 273 neuropsychologically normal outpatient referrals to a neuropsychology clinic. The analysis indicated that about 43% to 48% of the neuropsychology referrals exhibited retrieval difficulties and were able to store more information in long-term memory than they were able to retrieve on the delayed free recall trial.

Depressive symptoms as a factor in neuropsychological test performance: MMPI-2 and selected tests of the Halstead-Reitan/Halstead-Russell Battery.

The potential impact of depressive symptoms on neuropsychological test performance has been studied extensively yielding mixed results. Self-report depression inventories have been most often used, without a means to screen participants for response bias. Studies have also neglected to screen participants for incomplete effort in testing.

The relationship between flash based illusory line motion and exogenous visual attention.

If a bar suddenly appears between 2 squares after 1 of the squares flashes the bar appears to shoot away from the flashed square toward the other. This occurs despite the bar actually having been presented all at once. This illusory motion is sufficiently strong to cancel real motion drawn in the opposite direction.

Functional integration of ecological networks through pathway proliferation.

Large-scale structural patterns commonly occur in network models of complex systems including a skewed node degree distribution and small-world topology. These patterns suggest common organizational constraints and similar functional consequences. Here, we investigate a structural pattern termed pathway proliferation.

Presenilin-dependent ErbB4 nuclear signaling regulates the timing of astrogenesis in the developing brain.

Embryonic multipotent neural precursors are exposed to extracellular signals instructing them to adopt different fates, neuronal or glial. However, the mechanisms by which precursors integrate these signals to make timely fate choices remained undefined. Here we show that direct nuclear signaling by a receptor tyrosine kinase inhibits the responses of precursors to astrocyte differentiation factors while maintaining their neurogenic potential.

Notch1 signaling regulates radial glia differentiation through multiple transcriptional mechanisms.

Signaling by the Notch1 receptor is critical for the formation of radial glia in the developing nervous system. We have shown previously that Notch1 regulates the molecular and morphological differentiation of radial glia through the transcriptional activation of at least two genes, brain lipid binding protein (BLBP) and the erbB2 receptor tyrosine kinase. However, the mechanisms by which this occurs remained undefined.

Deep Impact: observations from a worldwide Earth-based campaign.

On 4 July 2005, many observatories around the world and in space observed the collision of Deep Impact with comet 9P/Tempel 1 or its aftermath. This was an unprecedented coordinated observational campaign. These data show that (i) there was new material after impact that was compositionally different from that seen before impact; (ii) the ratio of dust mass to gas mass in the ejecta was much larger than before impact; (iii) the new activity did not last more than a few days, and by 9 July the comet's behavior was indistinguishable from its pre-impact behavior; and (iv) there were interesting transient phenomena that may be correlated with cratering physics.

Ecosystem growth and development.

One of the most important features of biosystems is how they are able to maintain local order (low entropy) within their system boundaries. At the ecosystem scale, this organization can be observed in the thermodynamic parameters that describe it, such that these parameters can be used to track ecosystem growth and development during succession. Thermodynamically, ecosystem growth is the increase of energy throughflow and stored biomass, and ecosystem development is the internal reorganization of these energy mass stores, which affect transfers, transformations, and time lags within the system.

Sequential signaling through Notch1 and erbB receptors mediates radial glia differentiation.

Radial glia cells both generate neurons and physically guide nascent neurons to their target destination in the cortex, and as such they are essential for CNS development. It has been proposed that in the developing cerebellum, neuronal contact induces radial glia formation, however, the mechanisms involved in this process are not well understood. Here we demonstrate that neuronal induction of radial glia formation is the result of sequential signaling through Notch1 and erbB receptors.

April 25, 1870, court of General Sessions, New York City, Doctor William A. Hammond, neurologist and former Surgeon General of the United States Army, testified at the trial of his patient Daniel McFarland. McFarland had fatally wounded famous journalist Albert Richardson in November of 1869.

Complementarity of ecological goal functions.

This paper summarizes, in the framework of network environ analysis, a set of analyses of energy-matter flow and storage in steady-state systems. The network perspective is used to codify and unify ten ecological orientors or extremal principles: maximum power (Lotka), maximum storage (Jørgensen-Mejer), maximum empower and emergy (Odum), maximum ascendency (Ulanowicz), maximum dissipation (Schneider-Kay), maximum cycling (Morowitz), maximum residence time (Cheslak-Lamarra), minimum specific dissipation (Onsager, Prigogine), and minimum empower to exergy ratio (Bastianoni-Marchettini). We show that, seen in this framework, these seemingly disparate extrema are all mutually consistent, suggesting a common pattern for ecosystem development.

Female pelvic organ prolapse: diagnostic contribution of dynamic cystoproctography and comparison with physical examination.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of dynamic cystoproctography to the evaluation of female pelvic organ prolapse and to compare this contribution with that of physical examination.

Materials And Methods: The presence or absence of rectocele, enterocele, sigmoidocele, and cystocele on physical examination and on cystoproctography was retrospectively analyzed in 170 consecutive patients. For each of these diagnostic methods, organ prolapse was graded as small, moderate, or large on the basis of specific, defined measurements.

The new diagnosis and classification of diabetes mellitus.

We are in the midst of an epidemic of diabetes, and the prevalence appears to be especially marked within Delaware. To prevent tragic long-term complications of diabetes, and to minimize the enormous costs associated with treating them, an emphasis must be placed on the early diagnosis and aggressive management of diabetes. The changes in the classification, diagnosis and screening for diabetes should help to redirect the focus to one of preventive care.

Human Papillomavirus Is Associated with Monoclonal Gammopathies of Unknown Significance.

When monoclonal gammopathies arise in persons without evidence of plasma cell malignancy or lymphoproliferative disease, the term 'monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance' (MGUS) can be used. MGUS is believed to be the preneoplastic phase of lymphoproliferative diseases because many of these patients eventually develop malignant disease, mainly multiple myeloma. We have previously identified human papillomavirus (HPV) in a chronic benign plasma cell tumor of the cervix and in the bone marrow of multiple-myeloma patients.
