Antimicrobial resistance is a global threat, and pet-associated strains may pose a risk to human health. Equine veterinarians are at high risk of carrying methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS), but specific risk factors remain elusive, and few data are available for other personnel involved in the horse industry. The prevalence, characteristics, and risk factors for nasal carriage of MRS in horses and their caregivers were studied in northwestern Italy.

Infectious endometritis is considered one of the major causes of infertility and it can affect up to 60% of barren mares. It is characterized by the presence of one or more microorganisms in the reproductive tract and it is treated with the administration of antibiotics, ecbolic agents and uterine lavages. Ozone, thanks to its antimicrobial properties that are based on its high oxidative potential, could represent an effective alternative treatment for endometritis.

Oedema disease (ED) caused by Shiga-toxin-producing in pigs is a serious life-threatening disease, particularly among weaned piglets. When a preventive protocol is adopted in a specific farm, interpretation of effectiveness is often complicated in field conditions due to natural or "common cause" variation. For this reason, in this study a Statistical process control (SPC) approach was used to retrospectively evaluate the application of an ED preventive protocol (lower protein diet, fiber, vaccination at 5 days of age) in an infected commercial piglets' weaning site.

To understand the effectiveness of a probiotic mixture on intestinal morphology, mucus layer composition, and cecal microbiota diversity, 40 10-day-old Guinea fowls () were assigned to two groups: the control group (C), receiving drinking water, and the treated group (P), receiving water plus a commercial multi-strain probiotic (Slab51®, 2 × 10 CFU/L). Birds were slaughtered after 4 months, and the intestines were collected. Samples from the duodenum, ileum, and cecum were processed for morphological and morphometric studies, and conventional glycohistochemistry.

Article Synopsis
  • Swine farming is known to be a source of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), but there is a growing concern about methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCoNS) as emerging pathogens that can affect human health.
  • In a study conducted in five pig farms in northwestern Italy, nasal swabs from 195 pigs and environmental samples showed a high prevalence of MRCoNS, found in 64.5% of swabs, while MRSA was only detected once.
  • The research highlights the potential for horizontal gene transfer of resistance traits from MRCoNS to more harmful bacteria, raising important public health implications.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether cleaning surgical materials used to close pelvic flexure enterotomies with a wet sterile gauze will reduce contamination and whether the use of a full thickness appositional suture pattern (F) or a partial thickness inverting (or Cushing) suture pattern (C) would make a difference in the level of contamination. Large colon specimens were assigned to group F or C and divided into subgroups N and G. In group G, a wet sterile gauze was passed over the suture material, another over the instruments, and another over the gloves.
