Primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis and associated factors in a referral continence clinic of Abu Dhabi.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) and its associated factors in a major referral centre for nocturnal enuresis in the City of Abu Dhabi. Children referred to the Pediatric Continence Clinic of Department of Pediatric and Urology Surgery at Al Noor Hospital, Abu Dhabi (UAE), between January 2014 and January 2016 for the suspected diagnosis of NE were considered. The inclusion criteria of our study were: age 5-14 years; full medical history and physical examination; urine dipstick to exclude glycosuria and proteinuria; completion of diagnostic urological work-up; final diagnosis of PMNE.

Primary nocturnal enuresis: Assessment and treatment at a single referral center.

Methods: Children referred to the Paediatric Continence Clinic, between 2014 and 2016, for PNE were included in the study. Exclusion criteria were neuropathic bladder, abnormality of the bladder and bowel, urethral stenosis, neurological and psychiatric problems, non-completion of the diagnostic protocol, and follow up <6 months.

Sarcoglycan complex in human normal and pathological prostatic tissue: an immunohistochemical and RT-PCR study.

The sarcoglycan complex is a trans-membrane system playing a key role in mechano-signaling the connection from the cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. While b-, d-, and e-sarcoglycans are widely distributed, g- and a-sarcoglycans are expressed exclusively in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Insufficient data are available on the distribution of sarcoglycans in nonmuscular tissue.

Paediatric recurrent herpetic whitlow.

We present a case of recurrent painful blisters of middle phalanx of the left ring finger of a 15-month-old previously healthy and immunocompetent female child. These lesions initially were confused with infective bacterial whitlow, treated with incision and drainage, and later with cigarette burns which led to referral to child protection team. Paediatric dermatologist finally diagnosed after scrapping and virology culture.

Neonatal prolapsed patent vitellointestinal duct.

A case of a prolapsed patent vitellointestinal duct (PVID) in a 10-day-old neonate who presented with vomiting and poor weight gain with partial intestinal obstruction and a flower like pink, prolapsing lesion at his umbilicus has been reported. A limited contrast study through the tubular structure confirmed it to be a PVID. He underwent transumbilical exploration and resection and anastomosis uneventfully.

Conservative management of major abdominal wound dehiscence in premature babies - a seven-year experience.

Aim: The aim of the study was to analyse our experience of managing complete abdominal wound dehiscence in preterm neonates non operatively, when primary closure was not possible. We used intrasite gel (a carboxymethyl cellulose polymer which helps in wound debridement and healing) and occlusive duoderme dressings.

Materials And Methods: There were seven neonates who developed abdominal dehiscence following laparotomy between January 2000 and December 2006.

Hydronephrosis due to malrotation in a pelvic ectopic kidney with vascular anomalies.

A particular case of hydronephrosis in ectopic kidney due to a malrotation and vascular anomalies in a young girl is described. The patient was previously operated for ureteropelvic junction obstruction at the age of two. Clinic and radiographic and pathologic findings are discussed and the literature is reviewed.

Treatment of vesico-ureteric reflux: a new algorithm based on parental preference.

Unlabelled: Authors from Rome evaluated parental preference for treatment in children with grade III VUR. Parents were provided with detailed information about the three treatment options: antibiotic treatment, open surgery, endoscopic treatment. Most parents chose endoscopic management; with this in mind, the authors proposed a new treatment algorithm for VUR.

Fetal surgery for spina bifida aperta: to be or not to be?

Fetal SBA (spina bifida aperta) has been operated upon in more than 213 cases in the USA in the last 8 years. Indications and results still remain controversial. Our group reproduced successfully Meuli's model in sheep and reviewed the literature on SBA and the Internet updated sites on the theme.

Influence of voiding dysfunction on the outcome of endoscopic treatment for vesicoureteral reflux.

Purpose: Some patients with vesicoureteral reflux also experience voiding dysfunction. Dextranomer/hyaluronic acid copolymer (Deflux, Q-MED AB, Uppsala, Sweden) is an effective endoscopic treatment for vesicoureteral reflux. In an open label study we investigated the effect of voiding dysfunction on the efficacy of endoscopic treatment with dextranomer/hyaluronic acid copolymer in patients with vesicoureteral reflux.

Endoscopic treatment of vesico-ureteral reflux: twelve years' experience.

Introduction: Over the past 12 years, endoscopic treatment of vesico-ureteral reflux (VUR) has gained in popularity and has proved successful in a high percentage of cases. With improvements in injectable materials and more experience with the technique, the indications for endoscopic treatment have broadened. In the present paper we report our experience on 679 patients and 953 refluxing ureters, treated over the past 12 years.

An experimental animal model of intestinal obstruction to simulate in utero therapy for jejunoileal atresia.

Objective: To obtain 'intestinal atresia-like' conditions in the fetal lamb model to subsequently allow in utero surgical repair.

Methods: Six time-dated pregnant sheep underwent general anesthesia at 75 days of gestation (term 145 +/- 5 days). After maternal laparotomy and hysterotomy, the fetal abdomen was opened.

In utero partial liver resection in the rabbit model: a study on fetal tissue regeneration.

In this study we developed a model of in vivo intrauterine partial liver resection in the fetal rabbit to analyze fetal liver regeneration. After intravenous anesthesia, 12 time-dated pregnant, California rabbits underwent a midline laparotomy and minimal hysterotomy at 24-25 days of gestational age. One fetus was exposed from each pregnant doe and the fetal liver was partially resected.

[Ultrasonography in hypertrophic stenosis of the pylorus: clinico-therapeutic implications in borderline cases].

Previous publications attempted to define normal and abnormal ranges in the measurement of pyloric length (L), breadth (D), muscle thickness (S), volume (V) and muscle index (MI). We examined with US 286 patients with suspected hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and investigated all the above diagnostic criteria. Normal and abnormal ranges were in agreement in all five measurements, though less apparent for pyloric volume and muscle index.

Role of prenatal diagnosis in the treatment of congenital obstructive megaureter in a solitary kidney.

Congenital megaureter in a solitary kidney (CMSK) is a life-threatening disease. From January 1988 to December 1993, we treated 9 patients for CMSK (2 cases with unilateral renal dysplasia and 7 with unilateral renal agenesis). In 7 cases, the malformation was detected by prenatal ultrasonography and urological counseling.

Endoscopic treatment of vesico-ureteric reflux and urinary incontinence: technical problems in the paediatric patient.

Objective: Bovine collagen has been successfully used for the endoscopic treatment of urinary incontinence (UI) and vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) in children for more than 8 years, although its long-term efficacy has sometimes been questioned. Its failure is generally ascribed either to technical difficulties or to instability of collagen at the site of the implant. To assess the efficacy of the procedure we evaluated the children treated at this hospital between 1990 and 1993.

Pharmacokinetic study of intravenous rifampicin.

The time course of the serum and urine concentrations of rifampicin were evaluated during and after administration of an intravenous preparation of the antibiotic. 300, 450 and 600 mg dose levels of the antibiotic were evaluated, all being given as intravenous infusion after solution in 500 ml of glucose, the infusion lasting 3 h. The results have shown that the serum level curves and the kinetic parameters calculated on them do not differ to any major extent from those corresponding to the same doses given orally.
