Article Synopsis
  • Researchers investigated the effect of losartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker, on 28-day mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients compared to usual care, due to its potential impact on angiotensin levels.
  • The study was stopped early due to safety concerns, showing that adverse events and hypotension were significantly higher in the losartan group (39.8% SAEs and 30.4% hypotension) versus the control group (27.2% SAEs and 15.3% hypotension).
  • There was no significant difference in 28-day mortality (6.5% for losartan vs. 5.9% for usual care), indicating that ARBs should be used cautiously in this patient population to

Article Synopsis
  • A low allele burden (<20%) of the CALR driver mutation is present in 10.8% of patients with CALR-mutated myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), primarily seen in essential thrombocythemia.
  • Patients with this low allele burden tend to have a milder disease phenotype.
  • Those with less than 20% allele burden also experience a slower progression of their condition compared to patients with a higher allele burden (≥20%).

Article Synopsis
  • A study assessed the quality of life (QoL) of people living with HIV in Nouvelle Aquitaine, France, revealing that while 63.5% reported good/very good QoL, significant improvements are still needed.
  • The highest QoL scores were in physical and environmental domains (both median 69), while social and psychological scores were notably lower (both median 56).
  • Factors like having three or more comorbidities, experiencing HIV-related stigma, and a monthly income below €1500 were linked to poorer QoL, highlighting the need to address both health and social issues to improve outcomes for all PLWH.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the initiation and success of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for people diagnosed with HIV in the Aquitaine region of France, comparing cases from the pandemic period (2020-2021) to those diagnosed before (2018-2020).
  • It involved adults diagnosed with HIV-1 and assessed key metrics such as the time from diagnosis to ART initiation and achieved viral suppression.
  • Results showed that individuals diagnosed during the pandemic had a higher likelihood of starting therapy and achieving viral suppression than those diagnosed earlier, but the study noted fewer foreign-born individuals were diagnosed during the pandemic, suggesting potential barriers to care.

Background: Venous thromboembolism is a major complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We hypothesized that a weight-adjusted intermediate dose of anticoagulation may decrease the risk of venous thromboembolism COVID-19 patients.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomised, open-label, phase 4, superiority trial with blinded adjudication of outcomes, we randomly assigned adult patients hospitalised in 20 French centers and presenting with acute respiratory SARS-CoV-2.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to differentiate infectious aortitis (IA) from noninfectious aortitis (NIA) by examining their clinical, biological, and radiological features, along with their outcomes in a retrospective analysis of 183 patients from 10 French centers between 2014 and 2019.
  • - Results showed that 36.1% of patients had IA, primarily caused by bacteria like Enterobacterales and streptococci, while NIA was mainly due to vasculitides and idiopathic causes; IA was notably linked to a higher prevalence of aortic aneurysms and lower survival rates.
  • - The study concluded that IA had significantly higher mortality compared to NIA, with effective initial antibiotic treatment being

We aimed to estimate the prevalence of depressive disorder in people living with HIV (PLWH) and evaluate its association with non-HIV-specific and HIV-specific factors in PLWH and in PLWH compared to the general population (GP). We used cross-sectional data from the QuAliV study, conducted within the ANRS-CO3 Aquitaine-AQUIVIH-NA cohort of PLWH in Nouvelle-Aquitaine (2018-2020), and a nationally-representative survey in the GP (EHIS-ESPS, 2014-2015), we included all participants aged ≥ 18 years old who had completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8). Depressive disorder was defined as Patient Health Questionnaire-8 score greater or equal to 10.

Objectives: To determine whether hydroxychloroquine decreases the risk of adverse outcome in patients with mild to moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at high risk of worsening.

Methods: We conducted a multicentre randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial evaluating hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 patients with at least one of the following risk factors for worsening: need for supplemental oxygen, age ≥75 years, age between 60 and 74 years and presence of at least one co-morbidity. Severely ill patients requiring oxygen therapy >3 L/min or intensive care were excluded.

Objective: In March 2020, we implemented screening of the contacts of a COVID-19 cluster having occurred in the Lot-et-Garonne department, the first department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region to be affected by the active circulation of SARS-CoV-2. We aimed to describe the impact of this screening on the local SARS-CoV-2 outbreak.

Methods: All high-risk contacts, as well as the individuals living in their households, were screened.

Background: Symptomatic Primary Humoral Immunodeficiency Diseases (PHID) constitute a highly heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by a shared hypogammaglobulinemia, resulting in increased risk of recurrent or severe infections. Associations have been described with a variety of immunological abnormalities involving B and T-cell differentiation, T-cell activation and innate immunity. However, PHID discrimination remains based on B-lymphocyte abnormalities and other components of the immune system have not been sufficiently taken into account.

We reviewed 64 pregnancies in 26 women with Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) included in the French and German DBA registries. Complications were seen in 42 pregnancies (66%) and included abortion, pre-eclampsia, in utero fetal death, intrauterine growth retardation, retroplacental hematoma, pre-term delivery and fetal malformations. Of the 34 children (53%) born alive, 13 had DBA.
