Private management of African protected areas improves wildlife and tourism outcomes but with security concerns in conflict regions.

Protected areas can conserve wildlife and benefit people when managed effectively. African governments increasingly delegate the management of protected areas to private, nongovernmental organizations, hoping that private organizations' significant resources and technical capacities actualize protected areas' potential. Does private sector management improve outcomes compared to a counterfactual of government management? We leverage the transfer of management authority from governments to African Parks (AP)-the largest private manager of protected areas in Africa-to show that private management significantly improves wildlife outcomes via reduced elephant poaching and increased bird abundances.

Citizen monitoring of waterways decreases pollution in China by supporting government action and oversight.

Water pollution is a persistent problem in China, in part, because local governments fail to implement water quality standards set by national and provincial authorities. These higher authorities often lack regular information about the immediate and long-term achievement of remediation targets. Accordingly, central authorities have encouraged nongovernmental organizations to monitor local governments' remediation efforts.

The vicissitudes of conducting psychodynamic research in a naturalistic setting.

This article reports on our experiences conducting naturalistic research as clinician-researchers in a training setting within a public safety-net hospital. The naturalistic, practice-based context has presented various challenges to the research process, including the following: supporting research with limited finances, establishing continuity of research personnel, designating time for research within an intensive clinical training program, responding to difficulties obtaining data, seeking consultation for advanced data analysis, organizing the writing process, and determining order of authorship. In addition, in mixed-methods research of psychodynamic psychotherapy, each of these challenges has interacted with the inherent challenges of qualitative research.
