Three bacterial strains, named h-66, h-124 and h-125, were isolated from the haemolymph of different specimens of the flat oyster collected in Concarneau bay (Finistère, France). These strains were characterized by a polyphasic approach, including (i) whole genome analyses with 16S rRNA gene sequence alignment and pangenome analysis, determination of the G+C content, average nucleotide identity (ANI), and DNA-DNA hybridization (DDH), and (ii) fatty acid methyl ester and other phenotypic analyses. Strains h-66, h-124 and h-125 were closely related to both type strains RA15 and PAMC 28425 with less than 93.

This strain was selected for its antagonistic activity against pathogenic bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Lactococcus garvieae and against fungi (Aspergillus niger and Fusarium equiseti). The Q1 strain was characterised using standard morphological and biochemical tests, growth assays at different temperatures, pH and salinity.

While no exploitable structural elements were obtained for the former three, a partial amino acid sequence (X-P-P-X-X-I-V) was obtained for the latter, named Cg-636. Due to both its low MM and the presence of exotic amino acid residue (X), we suspected a bacterial origin and tracked cultivable hemolymph-resident bacteria of oyster for their antimicrobial abilities.

Methods: Patients with RA who had persistent monoarthritis received etanercept or IA corticosteroid injections. Efficacy was compared at Weeks 4 and 24.
The marine bacterium Vibrio tapetis is the causative agent of the brown ring disease, which affects the clam Ruditapes philippinarum and causes heavy economic losses in North of Europe and in Eastern Asia. Further characterization of V. tapetis isolates showed that all the investigated strains harbored at least one large plasmid.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) lung transplantation is associated with multi-factorial care management, because of immunosuppressive requirements, risk of infections, frequency of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hepatic alterations and CF pharmacokinetics (PK) specificities that result in important PK variability. CF is associated with frequent colonization of the airways by filamentous fungi, especially by Aspergillus species.

The prescription of PSZ together with the immunosuppressant tacrolimus (TRL) was evaluated in 14 lung transplant patients with cystic fibrosis. PSZ inhibited CYP3A4 TRL metabolism, resulting in a decrease of TRL dose by a factor of 3, with tapering to a mean of 2 mg/d.

Ultrasonography showed, in all cases, a cystic formation, medially located under the umbilicus, suggesting the presence of a cyst of the urachus. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, however, thanks to a more definite topographic evaluation, allowed elimination of this diagnosis in two patients with history of previous abdominal surgery.

Even though surgical techniques for isolated intestine, liver-intestine, and multivisceral transplantations were developed in the 1960's, very few patients were transplanted before 1990 because initial immunosuppression regimens were insufficient, making intestine transplantation impossible. Intestine transplantation resulted in death in most patients within days or months. The discouraging results of the first clinical trials were due to technical complications, sepsis, and the failure of conventional immunosuppression to control rejection.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: Fulminant myocarditis (FM) is uncommon and may be followed by a rapidly intractable cardiogenic shock. We report five consecutive patients with FM successfully bridged to recovery with a mechanical paracorporel biventricular assist device (BiVAD).
Methods: Five patients, four adults and one child (mean age 27+/-6 years, range, 5-36 years) underwent implantation from November 1999 to May 2003, for FM.
Objective: To study the pharmacoepidemiology of the prescription of systemic antifungal agents in 48 French haematology, intensive care and infectious diseases units.
Patients And Methods: Cases of invasive fungal infections (IFI) were identified retrospectively over a 1 year period. Data on underlying condition, IFI diagnosis, antifungal treatment and outcome were collected on the last five cases in each centre.
Background: Liver remnant volumes after major hepatic resection and graft volumes for liver transplantation correlate with surgical outcome. The relative contributions of the hepatic segments to total liver volume (TLV) are not well established.
Methods: TLV and hepatic segment volumes were measured with computed tomography (CT) in 102 patients without liver disease who underwent CT for conditions unrelated to the liver or biliary tree.
A 37-year-old female patient had a cardiac transplantation for dilated cardiomyopathy. She was sensitized by two pregnancies showing anti-human leukocyte antigen I and II antibodies. The pretransplantation crossmatch was negative, but she developed acute humoral rejection characterized by vascular C4d deposits, arteriolitis, and intravascular leukocyte accumulation and adhesion in venules.
