Article Synopsis
  • Verruciform xanthoma (VX) is a rare, benign lesion often found in the mouth, characterized by its painless, rough appearance and varying colors, typically affecting the gingiva and alveolar mucosa.
  • A clinical case is reported involving VX in the buccal mucosa that was associated with oral lichen planus, which was confirmed through histopathological analysis showing inflammation and specific cell characteristics.
  • Immunohistochemical tests indicated the presence of lipid-laden macrophages (xanthoma cells) in the VX, and the patient is currently being monitored with no recurrence of the VX but has ongoing lesions from lichen planus.

  • Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) is a benign condition affecting salivary glands, but its symptoms can resemble malignant epithelial pathologies, making accurate diagnosis challenging.* -
  • The article presents two cases: a 76-year-old woman with a painful ulcer on the hard palate initially suspected to be cancer and a 26-year-old man with an ulcer on the soft palate thought to be traumatic.* -
  • In both cases, biopsies confirmed NS, highlighting the importance for dentists to recognize oral ulcers lasting over two weeks without a clear cause.*

Vitamins are organic compounds present in low concentrations in food, performing vital and specific cell metabolism functions. Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell formation in the bone marrow and its deficiency is caused, mainly, by gastrointestinal malabsorption. In addition to systemic manifestations, oral signs and symptoms have also been associated to this condition such as glossitis, papillary atrophy, painful erythema areas, burning sensation, dysgeusia, lingual paresthesia and itching.

Objectives: To investigate the presence of soft tissue calcifications in the head and neck region on panoramic radiographs of older adults.

Methods: We analysed 1176 panoramic radiographs obtained between January 2013 and December 2018 from individuals of both sexes aged 60 years or older, who were referred by dental specialities to the Dental Imaginology Service of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The types of soft tissue calcification evaluated were as follows: carotid artery calcification (CAC), thyroid cartilage calcifications, triticeous cartilage calcifications, sialoliths, tonsilloliths and lymph node calcifications.

Article Synopsis
  • Cheilitis Glandularis (CG) is a rare, chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the minor salivary glands in the lips, characterized by thick saliva or mucopurulent secretion from dilated ducts and varying macrocheilia.* -
  • A case study is presented of a 48-year-old male with leucoderma suffering from both actinic and glandular cheilitis, highlighting the importance of clinical management, diagnosis criteria, and treatment.* -
  • Despite being relatively easy to diagnose, treating CG remains challenging due to its unclear cause, which complicates the development of specific and effective treatment options.*

Objective:  The aim was to correlate radiomorphometric indices and biochemical analyses as an auxiliary method in bone evaluation in male and female patients with chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) and controls.

Materials And Methods:  Nine radiomorphometric indices and four biochemical parameters were obtained: mental index (MI), height at the mental foramen, total mandibular height (THM), panoramic mandibular index (PMI), original height of the mandible, alveolar bone resorption, distance from the mental foramen to the alveolar bone crest (MF-ABC), mandibular cortical index (MCI), trabecular bone pattern, parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and Ca × P product (Ca × P).

Statistical Analysis:  The Mann-Whitney -test, chi-squared test, and Spearman's correlation were applied at a significance level of 95%.

Foreign bodies can penetrate the interior of soft and, sometimes, hard, tissues in various ways, including through open wounds, lacerations and traumatic accidents. However over the years, evidence of links between the use of dental materials and lately, significant involvement of aesthetic filler materials as foreign bodies in the oral and perioral region have been reported. Foreign body granulomas (FBGs) may develop from this exogenous material, histopathologically characterized by the presence of chronic inflammation and a high amount of macrophages.

The focus of this double-blind randomized study was on evaluating the effect of an aqueous extract of Mastruz (Chenopodium ambrosioides L.) on the bone repair process in vivo. In total, 36 male Wistar rats were randomly selected for this study, and divided into 3 groups (n = 12): Group HS (Hemostatic Sponge), Group SM (Hemostatic Sponge with Mastruz) and Group BC (Blood Clot).

Angioleiomyoma is a benign neoplasm that was considered a tumor of smooth-muscle origin until the most recent (2013) WHO classification of soft tissue tumors, in which it was reclassified as a tumor of perivascular origin. Angioleiomyomas rarely occur in the oral cavity. These lesions are treated surgically with good prognosis.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon benign soft tissue neoplasm, which usually presents as a solitary nodule, appearing especially in the tongue. There are few cases of multiple oral GCT in the English-language literature, with only three cases reported in the last 20 years. This report describes a case of two oral GCT in a young patient and provides a literature review from 1995 to 2015.

Introduction: Orthodontic patients can experience pain and discomfort on the oral mucosa from trauma caused by friction with the brackets and the wires. In this split-mouth design, single-blind randomized controlled trial, we aimed to investigate whether brackets with a self-snapping customized plastic shield would induce less mucosa alteration and discomfort than those without the shield.

Methods: The overall sample comprised 42 patients (22 female, 20 male) from a government-funded orthodontic practice, with a mean age of 16.

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common chronic inflammatory disease whose etiopathogenesis is not completely understood. Several factors have been proposed in an attempt to explain the variety of clinical manifestations and periods of exacerbation and remission of symptoms of these lesions. The objective of this study was to associate local factors, systemic diseases, and level of anxiety with clinical characteristics of OLP.

Introduction: Fixed orthodontic appliances have been regarded as a common causative factor of oral lesions. To manage soft tissue discomfort, most orthodontists recommend using a small amount of utility wax over the brackets in order to alleviate trauma. This in vitro study aimed at evaluating friction generated by two types of bracket protectors (customized acetate protector [CAP] and temporary resin protector [TRP]) during the initial stages of orthodontic treatment.
