The organoselenium compound, dicholesteroyl diselenide (DCDS) is a structural analogue of diphenyl diselenide (DPDS) and may be considered as a promising antioxidant drug in vivo. Nevertheless, little is known about the toxicological properties of DCDS. In the present study we evaluated the cytotoxic, genotoxic and mutagenic properties of DCDS in Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (V79) and in strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, proficient and deficient in several DNA-repair pathways.

Article Synopsis
  • Lonomia obliqua caterpillar envenomation causes severe systemic hemorrhage and acute kidney injury, which were studied using a rat model to observe tissue damage.
  • The study found rapid increases in various biomarkers indicating serious damage to the liver and kidneys, alongside effects like hemolytic anemia and inflammation in multiple organs.
  • Treatment with an antivenom was effective within 2 hours post-envenomation but less effective after 6 hours, highlighting the importance of timely intervention; significant DNA damage, particularly from oxidative stress, was also observed in affected tissues.
