Importance: Gait performance is affected by neurodegeneration in aging and has the potential to be used as a clinical marker for progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia. A dual-task gait test evaluating the cognitive-motor interface may predict dementia progression in older adults with MCI.
Objective: To determine whether a dual-task gait test is associated with incident dementia in MCI.
Introduction: Heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) have been associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Whether HF and AF are related to AD by enhancing AD neuropathological changes is unknown.
Methods: We applied network analyses and multiple logistic regression models to assess the association between HF and AF with severity of AD neuropathology in patients from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center database with primary neuropathological diagnosis of AD.
Background And Purpose: Epidemiological data about stroke are scarce in low- and middle-income Latin-American countries. We investigated annual incidence of first-ever stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) and 30-day case-fatality rates in a population-based setting in Tandil, Argentina.
Methods: We prospectively identified all first-ever stroke and TIA cases from overlapping sources between January 5, 2013, and April 30, 2015, in Tandil, Argentina.
Background: The Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor study 2013 (GBD 2013) is the first of a series of annual updates of the GBD. Risk factor quantification, particularly of modifiable risk factors, can help to identify emerging threats to population health and opportunities for prevention. The GBD 2013 provides a timely opportunity to update the comparative risk assessment with new data for exposure, relative risks, and evidence on the appropriate counterfactual risk distribution.

Vascular changes in patients with bvFTD are not unusual, but bvFTD tends to be ruled out in the presence of cerebrovascular disease. We aimed to identify the clinical, cognitive, and risk factor profile of bvFTD with coexistent cerebrovascular disease (V-bvFTD).

Aims: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the frequency of poststroke atrial fibrillation lasting less than 30 s in stroke and transient ischemic attack patients.
Background: Among patients with atrial fibrillation, the risk of stroke is highest for those with a history of stroke; however, oral anticoagulants can lower the risk of recurrent stroke by two-thirds. No consensus has been reached about how atrial fibrillation should be investigated in patients with stroke, and its prevalence after a stroke remains uncertain. We did a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the proportion of patients newly diagnosed with atrial fibrillation after four sequential phases of cardiac monitoring after a stroke or transient ischaemic attack.

We developed and tested the validity of a new stroke score, the 6S Score (Stroke Severity Score based on Six Signs and Symptoms), for quantifying ischemic stroke severity and predicting in-hospital mortality.
Methods: We prospectively assessed 210 consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients.
Poststroke atrial fibrillation (AF) represents up to 1 of 4 overall AF cases in acute ischemic stroke. Current guidelines recommend oral anticoagulation for every ischemic stroke patient in whom AF is diagnosed. However, in some cases, AF detected after acute ischemic stroke may be short-lasting and perhaps a nonrecurrent autonomic and inflammatory epiphenomena of stroke.

In response to the priorities established by the World Health Organization and the United Nations, PREVISTA was envisaged as a population-based program to determine the risk of first-ever and recurrent stroke and transient ischemic attack incidence and mortality in Tandil, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The study will be conducted according to Standardized Tools for Stroke Surveillance (STEPS Stroke) methodology and will enroll all new (incident) and recurrent consecutive cases of stroke and transient ischemic attack in the City of Tandil between May 1st, 2013 and April 30, 2015.

There is very scarce information regarding the neurological outcome of atrial fibrillation patients undergoing repeated systemic thrombolysis after early recurrent ischemic stroke.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: It is unknown whether atrial fibrillation (AF) detected after acute ischemic stroke is caused by neurogenic or cardiogenic mechanisms. Based on the potential damage to the autonomic nervous system, neurogenic mechanisms could be implicated in the pathophysiology of newly diagnosed AF. To test this hypothesis, we developed a mechanistic approach by comparing a prespecified set of indicators in acute ischemic stroke patients with newly diagnosed AF, known AF, and sinus rhythm.

Methods: We prospectively assessed every acute ischemic stroke and TIA patient admitted to our hospital between 2008 and 2011. We used a forward step-by-step multiple logistic regression analysis to assess the relationship between newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation and wake-up ischemic stroke or TIA, after adjusting for significant covariates.
Introduction: The processing of the emotion of disgust is attributed to the insular cortex (IC), which is also responsible for social emotions and higher-cognitive functions. We distinguish the role of the IC from its connections in regard to these functions through the assessment of emotions and social cognition in a double case report. These subjects were very rare cases that included a focal IC lesion and a subcortical focal stroke affecting the connections of the IC with frontotemporal areas.

We assessed the frequency, risk factors, and the prognostic impact of NOAF after CEA.
Methods: We assessed every patient undergoing CEA (n = 186) at our academic hospital between 2006 and 2009.
Prophylactic use of antiepileptic drugs in neurological conditions such as ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, head injury, and brain tumors has been matter of debate for many years. These drugs are used for reducing secondary neurological damage caused by epileptic seizures. However, the evidence supporting this indication is scarce.

We hypothesized that the detection of AF after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA) could be improved by using continuous cardiac monitoring (CCM) immediately after admission.

Because epidemiological and clinical characteristics in stroke vary according to regional factors, we need to know the peculiarities of stroke on this subcontinent. The purpose is to describe the clinical subtypes and risk factors in patients with ischemic stroke.
