Glioma is the most frequent and aggressive type of brain neoplasm, being anaplastic astrocytoma (AA) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), its most malignant forms. The survival rate in patients with these neoplasms is 15 months after diagnosis, despite a diversity of treatments, including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. The resistance of GBM to various therapies is due to a highly mutated genome; these genetic changes induce a de-regulation of several signaling pathways and result in higher cell proliferation rates, angiogenesis, invasion, and a marked resistance to apoptosis; this latter trait is a hallmark of highly invasive tumor cells, such as glioma cells.

In the present work, the preparation, characterisation, and efficiency of two different silica nanostructures as release vehicles of Cisplatin are reported. The 1-hexadeciltrimethyl-ammonium bromide templating agent was used to obtain mesoporous silica nanoparticles which were later loaded with Cisplatin. While sol-gel silica was very fast prepared using an excess of acetic acid during the hydrolysis-condensation reactions of tetraethylorthosilicate and at the same time the Cisplatin was added.

The anticancer properties of pure copper (II) acetate and copper (II) acetylacetonate, alone and loaded on functionalized sol-gel titania (TiO(2)), were determined in four different cancer cell lines (C6, RG2, B16, and U373), using increasing concentrations of these compounds. The copper complexes were loaded onto the TiO(2) network during its preparation by the solgel process. Once copper-TiO(2) materials were obtained, these were characterized by several physical-chemical techniques.

Epigenetic modifications play a central role in the differentiation and function of immune cells in adult animals. Developmentally regulated epigenetic patterns also appear to contribute to the ontogeny of the immune system. Lafora disease (LD) is an autosomal recessive, always fatal progressive myoclonus epilepsy with rapid cognitive and neurologic deterioration. Background: Interstitial immunotherapy consists of the local injection of immune cells or molecules with cytotoxic properties to destroy neoplastic cells. Intratumor injection of quinacrine induces intense recruitment of activated immune cells that leads to necrosis and elimination of experimental malignant neoplasms; this effect seems to be mediated by immune molecules.

Hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF) and its receptor, the cMET tyrosine kinase participate in cancer invasion, angiogenesis and metastasis in a wide variety of neoplastic cells. Meningioma is a bening tumour, however, it has a high rate of recurrence after surgery; the most important factor to predict relapse is the extent of surgical resection, several other potentially predictive factors have been studied with poor results. We examined by immunohistochemistry the expression of HGF/SF and its cMET receptor in a group of patients with benign meningioma with or without recurrence (n = 17 and n = 25, respectively), after a minimal follow-up of least 6 years.

Background: Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a cytokine that participates in multiple cell functions; it promotes proliferation, motility, and morphogenesis of epithelial cells. Some malignant tumors, such as breast carcinoma, bronchogenic carcinoma, and multiple myeloma, overexpress it and its receptor. Hepatocyte growth factor is also present in normal astrocytes; therefore, it is important to investigate whether HGF participates in the pathophysiology of malignant gliomas and other brain tumors.

Thalidomide could have therapeutic applications in neoplasms and in other diseases, particularly those of autoimmune origin. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of various doses of thalidomide on the growth of C6 glioma in rats, and to determine its effects on parameters of cell proliferation and angiogenesis.
