Promoting careers in health care for urban youth: What students, parents and educators can teach us.

There are many obstacles that urban youth experience in pursuing health careers, but the benefits of diversifying the classroom and workforce are clear. This is especially true today as educators and policymakers seek to enhance underrepresented minority students' access to health careers, and also achieve the health workforce needed to support the Affordable Care Act. The creation of student pipeline programs began more than 40 years ago, but success has been equivocal.

Post-Therasense inequitable conduct: a pharmaceutical perspective.

This article explores the policies behind and recent changes to the inequitable conduct defense in US patent law. Recognizing problems with the doctrine, the Federal Circuit clarified and heightened the underlying materiality and intent to deceive standards for inequitable conduct in its landmark Therasense decision in 2011. The doctrine underwent further reform later that year with the enactment of the America Invents Act, which, among other changes, created a supplemental examination mechanism by which a patentee can obtain PTO consideration of previously nondisclosed information and, subject to some limitations, inoculate itself from inequitable conduct challenges relating to the prior nondisclosure.

Interventions for preschool children at high risk for ADHD: a comparative effectiveness review.

Objectives: The US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality sponsored a comparative effectiveness review of interventions for preschoolers at risk for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Methods: Medline, Cochrane CENTRAL, Embase, PsycInfo, and Education Resources Information Center were searched from 1980 to November 24, 2011. Selected studies were comparative, and enrolled children <6 years with clinically significant disruptive behavior, including ADHD.

Background: As the North American population ages, the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis and the surgical interventions (ie, total knee arthroplasty [TKA]) aimed at correcting pain and disability will also rise proportionally. Therefore, efforts to better understand the factors associated with surgical outcomes are warranted. To date, no studies have examined the impact of psychosocial factors on acute postoperative TKA pain.

We investigated the frequency of undiagnosed sleep apnea in patients scheduled for elective total joint arthroplasty. Two hundred fifty-four patients were assessed between September 1999 and May 2001. At intake, patients were given a standard systems review with the addition of targeted questions about sleep apnea.
