The kinetics of reduction of two cobalt(III) complexes with similar redox potentials by hexacyanoferrate(II) were investigated in water and in reverse micelle (RM) microemulsions. The RMs were composed of water, surfactant [(sodium(bis(2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate)), NaAOT], and isooctane. Compared to the reaction in water, the reduction rates of (ethylenediaminetetraacetato)cobaltate(III) by hexacyanoferrate(II) were dramatically suppressed in RM microemulsions whereas a slight rate increase was observed for reduction of bis-(2,6-dipicolinato)cobaltate(III).

A convenient synthesis of a variety of substituted N-hydroxysulfamides from chlorosulfonyl isocyanate is reported. Alkyl groups can be introduced selectively on the N-Boc nitrogen of key intermediates 1a or 1b using the Mitsunobu reaction with alcohols. Subsequently the nitrogen carrying the silyloxy group can be alkylated under traditional conditions.

Aim: To assess lung involvement and the association of demographic and psychosocial factors with respiratory health in 736 persons with sarcoidosis at enrollment in A Case Control Etiologic Study of Sarcoidosis (ACCESS).

Methods: 736 patients with biopsy diagnosis of sarcoidosis within 6 months of enrollment were studied at 10 US centers. Lung involvement was evaluated by chest radiography, spirometry and dyspnea questionnaire.

The reactions of N-hydroxybenzenesulfonamide (Piloty's acid, PA) with a variety of metal oxidants are reported. Either nitric oxide or nitrite is the final reaction product, along with benzenesulfinate and the reduced metal compound. The nitrogen product depends on the oxidation potential of the metal oxidant and its ability to further oxidize NO to nitrite.
