Behavioral analysis of Microphallus turgidus cercariae in relation to microhabitat of two host grass shrimp species (Palaemonetes spp.).

The behavior of Microphallus turgidus cercariae was examined and compared to microhabitat selection of the second intermediate hosts of the parasite, Palaemonetes spp. grass shrimp. Cercariae were tested for photokinetic and geotactic responses, and a behavioral ethogram was established for cercariae in control and grass shrimp-conditioned brackish water.

Fiddler crabs (Uca spp.) as model hosts for laboratory infections of Hematodinium perezi.

The parasitic dinoflagellate, Hematodinium perezi, negatively impacts the commercially important blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. The parasite is a host generalist, but it has not been reported from littoral fiddler crabs living within a few meters of habitat known to harbor infected blue crabs. In the first study, populations of three species of fiddler crab were screened for natural infections.

Optimization of culture conditions for in vitro fertilization and reproduction of Microphallus turgidus (Trematoda: Microphallidae).

Most attempts to culture adult digeneans in vitro are unsuccessful. Even progenetic digeneans typically fail to produce infective eggs in axenic culture. However, metacercariae of Microphallus turgidus grown in vitro mature into adults and release eggs infective to the hydrobiid snail Spurwinkia salsa.

Behavioral assessment in Alzheimer's disease: use of a 24-hr log.

Although behavioral problems are a central feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), measurement of these behavioral problems has been limited in most studies to retrospective reports of the frequency of behaviors by caregivers. In the present study, 32 caregivers of AD patients completed detailed behavioral logs of their patients' adaptive and ineffective behaviors over a 48-hr period; these logs were then compared with more widely used instruments assessing patients' cognitive functioning, self-care, and behavioral problems. Results illustrate the nature of common behavioral problems in dementia, provide information on the time distribution of behavioral problems, and support the convergent and discriminant validity of one widely used measure of behavioral problems, the Memory and Behavior Problems Checklist.
