Severe defects in cell size are a nearly universal feature of cancer cells. However, the underlying causes are unknown. A previous study suggested that a hyperactive mutant of yeast Ras (ras2G19V) that is analogous to the human Ras oncogene causes cell size defects, which could provide clues to how oncogenes influence cell size.

Background: Application of current retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening criteria results in many unnecessary examinations, because only 5%-10% of infants screened require treatment. Application of screening criteria established by the Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity Study could significantly reduce unnecessary examinations without sacrificing sensitivity to detect treatment-requiring ROP. We evaluated the performance of the G-ROP criteria in a population of high-risk, outborn infants.

Aim: This research presents the radiogenic components in thirteen limestone samples from a quarry site in Ewekoro, southwestern Nigeria.

Methods: The distributions of natural radionuclides (U, Th and K) in the limestone samples were determined by gamma spectroscopy using a well-type thallium-doped sodium iodide detector. Also, estimated associated radiological hazards are presented and compared with the standard threshold values.

Importance: Pharmaceutical products, including unused portions, may contribute to financial and environmental costs in the United States. Because cataract surgery is performed millions of times each year in the United States and throughout the rest of the world, understanding these financial and environmental costs associated with cataract surgery is warranted.

Objective: To investigate the financial and environmental costs of unused pharmaceutical products after phacoemulsification surgery.

A method involving an overlay inoculum agar and antibiotic susceptibility discs in the determination of synergy of gentamicin and disc antibiotics against clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been described. Gentamicin combinations with carbenicillin showed synergism against all test isolates. Combinations containing fosfomycin had indifferent effects.

The clinical and radiological features of parotid-gland sarcoidosis in 22 patients are presented. This occurred in association with systemic disease as painless, diffuse and nonnodular parotid swelling. Conventional sialography usually demonstrated normal proximal ducts, a few fragile distal ducts and non-specific parenchymal nodules.

Twenty-one cases of nasal airway obstruction were analyzed using computed tomography (CT) at the Children's Hospital in Boston between 1980 and 1984. Seven of these patients had stenosis of the entire nasal passage, two had stenosis of the anterior nasal cavity, and 12 had atresia of the posterior choanae. The spectrum of these abnormalities and the optimum technique for CT scanning are discussed.

Eleven of 57 tumours and cysts (19 per cent) seen at two major centres over a 4-year period were ameloblastomas, primary in eight and recurrent in three. Computed Tomography (CT) was the most sensitive imaging technique for detecting ameloblastomas. The radiological features were distinctive maxillary and mandibular pathology in primary cases and soft-tissue, maxillary sinus and asymmetrical deep tissue involvement in both primary and recurrent ameloblastomas.

Chronic subdural hematoma was identified radiographically and verified surgically in two patients with brain tumor, one meningioma, and one glioblastoma multiforme. Over a period of days or weeks, both patients developed dramatic clinical findings probably related to the mass effect from the subdural hematoma in addition to the preexisting tumor. Early awareness of this complication in patients with brain tumor may lead to successful surgical treatment.

The CT features of a case of adult ileocolic intussusception and of experimentally induced ileocolic, cecocolic, and colocolic intussusceptions are presented. Both the clinical and experimental cases demonstrated (1) "target" masses with enveloped, eccentrically located areas of low density and (2) interspersed low- and high-density stripes within the intussusception producing a "layered" or "stratified" pattern. This layered pattern of abdominal masses may be characteristic of intussusceptions regardless of location.
