Aim: To use autofluorescence multispectral imaging (AFMI) to develop a non-invasive assay for the in-depth characterisation of human bone marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hBM-MSCs).

Methods: hBM-MSCs were imaged by AFMI on gridded dishes, stained for endpoints of interest (STRO-1 positivity, alkaline phosphatase, beta galactosidase, DNA content) then relocated and results correlated. Intensity, texture and morphological features were used to characterise the colour distribution of regions of interest, and canonical discriminant analysis was used to separate groups.

We describe and analyze case investigation and contact tracing (CICT) efforts across Ohio's public universities in response to COVID-19 to distill challenges and lessons learned and suggest future opportunities for universities to mobilize in the face of emergent public health crises. The survival of newer variants of SARS-CoV-2 on a representative surface has been compared to the established UK circulating isolate to determine whether enhanced environmental stability could play a part in their increased transmissibility. Stainless steel coupons were inoculated with liquid cultures of the three variants, with coupons recovered over seven days and processed for recoverable viable virus using plaque assay. After drying, there was no significant difference in inactivation rates between variants, indicating that there is no increased environmental persistence from the new variants.

The Eph receptor tyrosine kinase ligand, ephrinB1 (EfnB1) is important for correct skeletal and cartilage development, however, the role of EfnB1 in fracture repair is unknown. This study investigated the role of EfnB1 during fracture repair where EfnB1 expression increased significantly at 1 and 2 weeks post fracture in C57Bl/6 wildtype mice, coinciding with the haematoma, soft callus formation/remodelling stages, respectively. To investigate the specific role of EfnB1 within the osteogenic lineage during fracture repair, male mice with a conditional deletion of EfnB1 in the osteogenic lineage (EfnB1), driven by the Osterix (Osx) promoter, and their male Osx:Cre counterparts were subject to a femoral fracture with internal fixation.

Sample return missions to Phobos are the subject of future exploration plans. Given the proximity of Phobos to Mars, Mars' potential to have supported life, and the possibility of material transfer from Mars to Phobos, careful consideration of planetary protection is required. If life exists, or ever existed, on Mars, there is a possibility that material carrying organisms could be present on Phobos and be collected by a sample return mission such as the Japanese Martian Moons eXplorer (MMX).

The mortality rates of large trees are critical to determining carbon stocks in tropical forests, but the mechanisms of tropical tree mortality remain poorly understood. Lightning strikes thousands of tropical trees every day, but is commonly assumed to be a minor agent of tree mortality in most tropical forests. We use the first systematic quantification of lightning-caused mortality to show that lightning is a major cause of death for the largest trees in an old-growth lowland forest in Panama.

The present study investigated the effects of conditional deletion of ephrinB1 in osteoprogenitor cells driven by the Osterix (Osx) promoter, on skeletal integrity in a murine model of ovariectomy-induced (OVX) osteoporosis. Histomorphometric and μCT analyses revealed that loss of ephrinB1 in sham Osx:cre-ephrinB1 mice caused a reduction in trabecular bone comparable to OVX Osx:Cre mice, which was associated with a significant reduction in bone formation rates and decrease in osteoblast numbers. Interestingly, these observations were not exacerbated in OVX Osx:cre-ephrinB1 mice.
