External Quality Assurance programs for processing methods provide evidence on impact of preanalytical variables.

An annual External Quality Assurance (EQA) program has been provided to processing laboratories over the last ten years, allowing them to assess the performance of their processing methods, such as nucleic acid extractions or peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) isolation and cryopreservation. The objective of this study was to perform a global analysis on almost 1000 EQA scheme/participant data in order to assess (i) the impact of critical preanalytical factors on quantitative or qualitative attributes of different types of specimens and (ii) laboratory performance pattern over time. Statistical analysis was performed within each EQA scheme based on categorized preanalytical data provided by the participants and on centralized measurements of relevant quality attributes of the produced specimens (z-scores): DNA, cell-free (cf)DNA or RNA extraction from blood, DNA or RNA extraction from formalin fixed tissue, DNA or RNA extraction from frozen tissue, DNA extraction from saliva or stool, viable PBMC isolation and cryopreservation.

Patient-reported outcome measurements in post-mastectomy implant-based breast reconstruction and radiotherapy: Analysis of BREAST-Q data.

Background: Breast reconstruction has become a standard of care in patients undergoing mastectomy, greatly improving their quality of life. An increasing number of patients-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) have been developed over the years to better analyze patients' subjective overall experience. BREAST-Q is the PROMs for breast surgery introduced in our practice to assess patients' experiences when undergoing implant-based breast reconstruction and radiotherapy along with the use of Peak Plasma Blade and acellular dermal matrix.

Hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes and the COVID-19 pandemic: results from a survey conducted in patients enrolled in a dedicated registry.

Purpose: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had profound consequences also for non-infected patients. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on the quality of life of a population with hereditary gastrointestinal cancer predisposition syndromes and on the surveillance/oncological care program of patients enrolled in a dedicated registry.

We describe in this paper the implementation of E-Water, an open software Decision Support System (DSS), designed to help local managers assess the Water Energy Food Environment (WEFE) nexus. E-Water aims at providing optimal management solutions to enhance food crop production at river basin level. The DSS was applied in the transboundary Mékrou river basin, shared among Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Cytogenetic characterization of (Bloch, 1794) from the Ctalamochita River (Córdoba, Argentina): first evidence for southernmost populations of this species complex and comments on its biogeography.

(Bloch, 1794), a predatory freshwater fish with a wide distribution throughout South America, represents a species complex with seven well characterized karyomorphs at the cytogenetic level. Although this species has been extensively studied in several Brazilian basins, data are still scarce for hydrographic systems from other South American countries. This study aims to characterize cytogenetically the populations from the Argentinean Central Region, close to the southernmost distribution of this species complex.

Attention to detail in Italian parents of women with anorexia nervosa: a comparative study.

Aim: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) may share traits such as mental rigidity and attention to detail, some of which might be familial. We aimed to investigate the distribution of autistic traits among parents of daughters suffering from eating disorders (anorexia or bulimia nervosa), comparing them with control parents.

Methods: As a whole, 40 parents of women with eating disorders (60% AN, 40% BN) and 33 control parents were recruited and accepted an examination through the administration of the autism spectrum quotient (AQ).

Modelling water and nutrient fluxes in the Danube River Basin with SWAT.

This study provides an innovative process-based modelling approach using the SWAT model and shows its application to support the implementation of the European environmental policies in large river basins. The approach involves several pioneering modelling aspects: the inclusion of current management practices; an innovative calibration and validation methodology of streamflow and water quality; a sequential calibration starting from crop yields, followed by streamflow and nutrients; and the use of concentrations instead of loads in the calibration. The approach was applied in the Danube River Basin (800,000km), the second largest river basin in Europe, that is under great nutrients pressure.

Assessing the impact of bibliographical support on the quality of medical care in patients admitted to an internal medicine service: a prospective clinical, open, randomised two-arm parallel study.

Unlabelled: To assess and quantify the impact of the literature in diagnostic decisions and treatment of patients admitted to an internal medicine service using the methodology of evidence-based medicine. From November 2012 to February 2013, patients who were hospitalised in the internal medicine service of Regional Hospital of Lugano (Switzerland) and generated questions on medical care were randomly assigned to two groups: an 'intervention group' (supported by the literature research) and a 'control group' (not supported by the literature research). The information obtained from the literature was submitted by email to all members of the medical team within 12 h after asking the question.

Baseline micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities frequencies in native fishes from the Paraná River (Argentina).

This work aims to establish baseline frequencies of micronuclei (MN) and nuclear abnormalities (NA) in native fish species collected in situ from the Paraná River. For this purpose, the micronucleus test was applied in peripheral blood erythrocytes from specimens obtained from samplings collected at two localities (Posadas and Candelaria, Misiones, Argentina) during the period 2007-2010. The results were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test.

Characterization and description of a multiple sex chromosome system in Potamotrygon motoro (Chondrichthyes, Myliobatiformes) from the Paraná River, Argentina.

The Potamotrygonidae family represents the only freshwater group of specialized elasmobranchs and is composed of 4 genera: Plesiotrygon, Paratrygon, Potamotrygon, and Heliotrygon. Individuals of Potamotrygon motoro were collected from the Paraná River at Ituzaingó (Province of Corrientes) in Argentina. Mitotic preparations were obtained using direct techniques and lymphocyte cultures.

The purpose of this article was to report a pediatric case of secondary cervical esthesioneuroblastoma involving the parapharyngeal lymph nodes. A 3-year-old boy came to our clinical observation because of a right lymphonodal mass evidenced by nuclear magnetic resonance and a diagnosis of Cushing syndrome associated with ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone secretion, moon face, central obesity, asthenia, and hirsutism. At the age of 10 months, the patient underwent endoscopic surgery for asportation of the World Health Organization stage IV esthesioneuroblastoma.

We describe for the first time the karyotypes of two species of Cryptodiran turtles from Argentina, namely, Trachemys dorbigni (Emydidae) and Chelonoidis (Geochelone) donosobarrosi (Testudinidae). Background: There is evidence that blood pressure measurement outside the doctor's office can provide valuable information for the diagnostic evaluation of hypertensive patients and for monitoring their response to treatment. Comparative cytogenetic studies of Curimatidae (Pisces, Characiformes) from the middle Paraná River (Argentina).

Chromosome evolution in the erythrinid fish, Erythrinus erythrinus (Teleostei: Characiformes).

The genus Erythrinus belongs to the family Erythrinidae, a neotropical fish group. This genus contains only two described species, Erythrinus erythrinus being the most widely distributed in South America. Six samples of this species from five distinct Brazilian localities and one from Argentina were studied cytogenetically.

Specific cellular responses to alpha-tocopherol.

In the last 10 years precise cellular functions of alpha-tocopherol, some of which are independent of its antioxidant/radical-scavenging ability, have been revealed. Absorption of alpha-tocopherol from the gut is a selective process. Other tocopherols are not absorbed or are absorbed to a lesser extent.

Lycopene in association with alpha-tocopherol inhibits at physiological concentrations proliferation of prostate carcinoma cells.

The effect of lycopene alone or in association with other antioxidants was studied on the growth of two different human prostate carcinoma cell lines (the androgen insensitive DU-145 and PC-3). It was found that lycopene alone was not a potent inhibitor of prostate carcinoma cell proliferation. However, the simultaneous addition of lycopene together with alpha-tocopherol, at physiological concentrations (less than 1 microM and 50 microM, respectively), resulted in a strong inhibitory effect of prostate carcinoma cell proliferation, which reached values close to 90 %.

A polygraphic study of systolic time intervals and their correlations with heart rate and workload during supine ergometry in one hundred normal subjects.

The present study was designed to investigate systolic time intervals (STI) in 100 normal subjects undergoing continuous-maximal supine cycle ergometry and to search for possible linear correlations between STI (dependent variables) and heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, age, sex, weight, and height (independent variables), by stepwise regression analysis. The only significant correlation discovered in the study was between the contractility index (isometric contraction time-ICT) and the total work produced by each participant. Exercise tolerance was limited primarily by shortening of the ICT interval, all subjects discontinuing the test when ICT reached 13.
