Over the past century, the chick embryo model, historically employed for research in developmental biology, has become a valuable tool for cancer research. The characteristics of the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) make it a convenient model for the study of cancer, leading to the establishment of the CAM assay as an alternative to traditional in vivo cancer models. In this review we will explore the characteristics of the CAM that make it suitable for cancer research, as well as its consolidation as a versatile platform in this field.

With the growth of the chemical industry over the last decade, the need for cheaper (and more environmentally friendly) alternatives to petrochemicals of ever-increasing cost has grown steadily. Oleochemicals and biodiesel (OC/BD) are considered as green alternatives to petroleum derivatives, because they come from renewable oils and fats. OC/BD are currently produced by the traditional energy intensive chemical catalyzed methods, which have several economic and environmental drawbacks.

Skin uses interdependent cellular networks for barrier integrity and host immunity, but most underlying mechanisms remain obscure. Herein, we demonstrate that the human parasitic helminth Schistosoma mansoni inhibited pruritus evoked by itch-sensing afferents bearing the Mas-related G-protein-coupled receptor A3 (MrgprA3) in mice. MrgprA3 neurons controlled interleukin (IL)-17 γδ T cell expansion, epidermal hyperplasia and host resistance against S.

Climate change poses significant challenges to the grapevine cultivation for wine production. In the last years, the occurrence of extreme weather events such as intense heat waves and prolonged period of drought increased sunburn damage with negative consequences to yield and berry composition. Short-term adaptation strategies are urgently needed to mitigate these effects.

Identification and manipulation of cellular energy regulation mechanisms may be a strategy to increase productivity in photosynthetic organisms. This work tests the hypothesis that polyphosphate synthesis and degradation play a role in energy management by storing or dissipating energy in the form of ATP. A polyphosphate kinase () knock-out strain unable to synthesize polyphosphate was generated in the cyanobacterium sp.

Article Synopsis
  • * It involved evaluating 85 brain MRI scans using different sequences, with a specific analysis on intra- and inter-rater reliability determined through ICC metrics.
  • * Results indicate that while the 3 mm SE-T1w and 3 mm resliced GrE-T1w images show high reliability, the 1 mm 3D-GrE-T1w sequence is less consistent, suggesting the use of a 3 mm resliced GrE-T1w for more reliable BH assessment.

Host defense at the mucosal interface requires collaborative interactions between diverse cell lineages. Epithelial cells damaged by microbial invaders release reparative proteins such as the Trefoil factor family (TFF) peptides that functionally restore barrier integrity. However, whether TFF peptides and their receptors also serve instructive roles for immune cell function during infection is incompletely understood.

Skin employs interdependent cellular networks to facilitate barrier integrity and host immunity through ill-defined mechanisms. This study demonstrates that manipulation of itch-sensing neurons bearing the Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor A3 (MrgprA3) drives IL-17+ γδ T cell expansion, epidermal thickening, and resistance to the human pathogen through mechanisms that require myeloid antigen presenting cells (APC). Activated MrgprA3 neurons instruct myeloid APCs to downregulate interleukin 33 (IL-33) and up-regulate TNFα partially through the neuropeptide calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP).

The characterization of organic contaminants in sewage sludge is a fundamental step to address the relevant most appropriate management practice. In this perspective, C10-C40 hydrocarbon content was considered in Italy a crucial parameter to be considered, in spite of its irrelevance in the literature. The very complex mixture of organic substances of both biogenic and anthropogenic origin the sludge is made up of makes sewage sludge a matrix of uniqueness nature, and the analytic determination of hydrocarbon content through conventional procedures may be subjected to overestimation.

Many studies which describe the relationship between obesity and economic preference rely on healthy, clinically-irrelevant populations. Instead, we study economic decision-making of a clinically-relevant population of 299 people with obesity who participated in a 6-months Randomized Controlled Trial in two Sydney-based hospitals to prevent diabetes onset. To elicit preferences, we use incentive-compatible experimental tasks that participants completed during their medical screening examination.
