Poland has a leading position in phage therapy, as reflected by the number of patients treated and relevant publications in quality journals. The Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established by Ludwik Hirszfeld, a prominent microbiologist and serologist who also initiated studies on phages and pioneered the activities that set into motion phage therapy at the Institute. To achieve this goal, Hirszfeld had to overcome many difficulties in a post-war Poland.

The year 2020 marked 15 years of the Phage Therapy Unit in Poland, the inception of which took place just one year after Poland's accession to the European Union (2004). At first sight, it is hard to find any connection between these two events, but in fact joining the European Union entailed the need to adapt the regulatory provisions concerning experimental treatment in humans to those that were in force in the European Union. These changes were a solid foundation for the first phage therapy center in the European Union to start its activity.

Mercaptobenzamide thioesters and thioethers are chemically simple HIV-1 maturation inhibitors with a unique mechanism of action, low toxicity, and a high barrier to viral resistance. A structure-activity relationship (SAR) profile based on 39 mercaptobenzamide prodrug analogs exposed divergent activity/toxicity roles for the internal and terminal amides. Amyloid-beta1-42 (Abeta1-42) is crucial to Alzheimer disease (AD) pathogenesis but the conformation of the toxic Abeta species remains uncertain. AD risk is increased by apolipoprotein E4 (apoE4) and decreased by apoE2 compared with the apoE3 isoform, but whether inheritance of apoE4 represents a gain of negative or a loss of protective function is also unresolved. Using hippocampal slices from apoE knockout (apoE-KO) and human apoE2, E3, and E4 targeted replacement (apoE-TR) mice, we found that oligomeric Abeta1-42 inhibited long-term potentiation (LTP) with a hierarchy of susceptibility mirroring clinical AD risk (apoE4-TR > apoE3-TR = apoE-KO > apoE2-TR), and that comparable doses of unaggregated Abeta1-42 did not affect LTP.

Inheritance of the epsilon4 allele for apolipoprotein E (apoE) increases the risk of Alzheimer disease and memory impairment, whereas epsilon2 decreases these risks compared with the most common epsilon3 allele, but the mechanism for these effects is unknown. Long-term potentiation (LTP) is an experimentally induced increase in synaptic efficacy that models memory. Using hippocampal slices from wild type (WT), apoE knockout (apoE-KO), and targeted replacement mice expressing human apoE2, E3, or E4 (apoE-TR) we found that although all strains had comparable basal synaptic transmission, LTP was significantly greater in WT and apoE3-TR than in apoE-KO, apoE2-TR or apoE4-TR.

The incidence of bile leaks has increased with laparoscopic cholecystectomy as compared with open cholecystectomy. Minor bile leaks are not infrequent but are clinically insignificant; of the major bile leaks the most common sequela is the biloma, the most serious, bile peritonitis. Early symptoms may be very subtle; all untoward symptoms should be investigated with a HIDA scan to rule out bile leakage.

Synthesis of various RNA species was studied in liver, spleen, and kidney tissues of one year old Wistar rat males within 6, 12, 24 and 48 hrs after peritonitis development. RNA biosynthesis was found to be unaltered in kidney; in liver tissue it was distinctly decreased beginning from 24 hrs and lowered down to 40% of the control value within 2 days. In spleen an increase in synthesis of pro-mRNA (90%) and mRNA was observed at early steps of peritonitis, with the subsequent decrease of these patterns within 24-48 hrs as compared with the previous periods of the disease as well as with controls.
