Background & Aims: After radiofrequency ablation (RFA), patients may experience recurrence of Barrett's esophagus (BE) after complete eradication of intestinal metaplasia (CEIM). Rates and predictors of recurrence after successful eradication have been poorly described.

Methods: We used the US RFA Registry, a nationwide registry of BE patients receiving RFA, to determine rates and factors that predicted recurrence of intestinal metaplasia (IM).

Childhood anemia is a major global health problem resulting from multiple causes. Iron supplementation addresses iron deficiency anemia but is undesirable for other types of anemia and may exacerbate infections. The peptide hormone hepcidin governs iron absorption; hepcidin transcription is mediated by iron, inflammation, and erythropoietic signals.

Animal and human observational studies suggest that iron deficiency impairs physical exercise performance, but findings from randomized trials on the effects of iron are equivocal. Iron deficiency and anemia are especially common in women of reproductive age (WRA). Clear evidence of benefit from iron supplementation would inform clinical and public health guidelines.

A 74-year-old man presents with a left upper lobe lung adenocarcinoma, which demonstrated a wide base intimately with the aortic arch. We utilised 4D CT technique with a wide field of view CT unit to preoperatively determine likely surgical resectability. We propose that 4D CT may be of use in further investigating lung cancer with likely invasion of adjacent structures.

Background: Anemia is an important public health and clinical problem. Observational studies have linked iron deficiency and anemia in children with many poor outcomes, including impaired cognitive development; however, iron supplementation, a widely used preventive and therapeutic strategy, is associated with adverse effects. Primary-school-aged children are at a critical stage in intellectual development, and optimization of their cognitive performance could have long-lasting individual and population benefits.

After the advent of ECG gated cardiac CT angiography (CCTA) there has been significant improvement in image quality of the ascending aorta. As a result the sinuses of valsalva are readily assessable. Sinuses of valsalva aneurysm can cause significant dysfunction of the aortic root and annulus and can be congenital or acquired.

Background: Anemia affects over 500 million women, and in pregnancy is associated with impaired maternal and infant outcomes. Intermittent antenatal iron supplementation is an attractive alternative to daily dosing; however, the impact of this strategy on infant outcomes remains unclear. We compared the effect of intermittent antenatal iron supplementation with daily iron supplementation on maternal and infant outcomes in rural Viet Nam.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase positive, anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is an uncommon T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A rare morphological variant-small cell variant of ALCL may pose diagnostic challenge especially when it presents primarily as a soft tissue mass. We present a rare case of small cell variant of ALCL in a 14-year-old female presented with arm swelling with emphasis on clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical aspects.

Osteoclast like-giant cell tumor of the salivary gland is an extremely rare tumor with distinct pathological features and unknown histogenesis. The neoplastic nature of these tumors in itself is questionable. We present the twentieth case in English literature of primary osteoclast like-giant cell tumor with accompanying low to intermediate grade salivary duct carcinoma of parotid gland, metastasizing to the ipsilateral cervical lymph node.

β-Thalassemia major causes ineffective erythropoiesis and chronic anemia and is associated with iron overload due to both transfused iron and increased iron absorption, the latter mediated by suppression of the iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin. We sought to determine whether, in β-thalassemia major, transfusion-mediated inhibition of erythropoiesis dynamically affects hepcidin. We recruited 31 chronically transfused patients with β-thalassemia major and collected samples immediately before and 4 to 8 days after transfusion.

Background And Objectives: Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common cause of anemia worldwide. The prevalence is highest among preschool-aged children. Iron is widely administered to children with or at risk for ID, but evidence of benefit among 2- to 5-year-old children has not been evaluated by systematic review.

Despite worldwide economic and scientific development, more than a quarter of the world's population remains anemic, and about half of this burden is a result of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). IDA is most prevalent among preschool children and women. Among women, iron supplementation improves physical and cognitive performance, work productivity, and well-being, and iron during pregnancy improves maternal, neonatal, infant, and even long-term child outcomes.

Objectives: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of Barrett's esophagus (BE) is safe and effective in eradicating dysplasia and intestinal metaplasia, and may reduce rates of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). We assessed rates of and risk factors for disease recurrence after successful treatment of BE with RFA.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients who completed RFA for dysplastic BE or intramucosal carcinoma (IMC), achieved complete eradication of dysplasia (CE-D) or intestinal metaplasia (CE-IM), and underwent subsequent endoscopic surveillance at a single center.

Exclusion of malaria traditionally requires three negative serial thick and thin blood films. However, many clinical laboratories now routinely perform rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) in addition to blood films when malaria is suspected. We sought to determine whether serial testing is necessary in this setting.

Identifying molecular mechanisms of insecticide resistance is important for preserving insecticide efficacy, developing new insecticides and implementing insect control. The metabolic detoxification of insecticides is a widespread resistance mechanism. Enzymes with the potential to detoxify insecticides are commonly encoded by members of the large cytochrome P450, glutathione S-transferase and carboxylesterase gene families, all rapidly evolving in insects.

Penicillium marneffei is an opportunistic pathogen of humans and displays a temperature dependent dimorphic transition. Like many fungi, exogenous DNA introduced by DNA mediated transformation is integrated randomly into the genome resulting in inefficient gene deletion and position-specific effects. To enhance successful gene targeting, the consequences of perturbing components of the non-homologous end joining recombination pathway have been examined.
