Due to the recent pandemic, new teaching methods have been trialed, even in traditional disciplines such as histopathology, which typically involve extensive hands-on laboratory work. In this study, we investigated the effects of three different learning modalities in histopathology teaching: optical microscopy, in-class virtual microscopy (VM), and online VM lectures. We examined relational aspects, didactic effectiveness, and satisfaction of these learning settings, both during class time and in private study, outside the dedicated spaces and hours of the university.

Human arteries show structural and functional peculiarities according to the nutrient and oxygen needs of a specific vascular district. This architectural heterogeneity is reflected in the pathological setting of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Indeed, the responsiveness to cardiovascular risk factors, and the morphological and molecular patterns are discriminating factors among CVDs affecting different vascular beds.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death globally, affects the heart and arteries with a variety of clinical manifestations, the most dramatic of which are myocardial infarction (MI), abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), and intracranial aneurysm (IA) rupture. In MI, necrosis of the myocardium, scar formation, and loss of cardiomyocytes result from insufficient blood supply due to coronary artery occlusion. Beyond stenosis, the arteries that are structurally and functionally connected to the cardiac tissue can undergo pathological dilation, i.

Angiosarcomas (ASs) are rare malignant vascular entities that can affect several regions in our body, including the heart. Cardiac ASs comprise 25-40% of cardiac sarcomas and can cause death within months of diagnosis. Thus, our aim was to identify potential differences and/or similarities between cardiac and extra-cardiac ASs to enhance targeted therapies and, consequently, patients' prognosis.

Visceral sarcomas are a rare malignant subgroup of soft tissue sarcomas (STSs). STSs, accounting for 1% of all adult tumors, are derived from mesenchymal tissues and exhibit a wide heterogeneity. Their rarity and the high number of histotypes hinder the understanding of tumor development mechanisms and negatively influence clinical outcomes and treatment approaches.

Introduction: Calcification of a vascular endograft and adjacent tissues (adventitia, media, and neointima) can result in graft failure. This report shows a rare case of intraluminal calcifications in the distal end of a thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) endograft implanted 11 years previously for grade IV blunt traumatic aortic injury (BTAI) in a young patient.

Report: A 24 year old man required TEVAR for a BTAI caused by a motorcycle accident.

Little is known about the signaling network responsible for the organization of the perinuclear actin cap, a recently identified structure holding unique roles in the regulation of nuclear shape and cell directionality. In cancer cells expressing a constitutively active MET, we show a rearrangement of the actin cap filaments, which crash into perinuclear patches associated with spherical nuclei, meandering cell motility and inactivation of the mechano-transducer YAP1. MET ablation is sufficient to reactivate YAP1 and restore the cap, leading to enhanced directionality and flattened nuclei.

Background: Thrombotic microangiopathy is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition inducing severe endothelial injury in many organs, particularly native and transplanted kidneys. Current pathological studies by our group have identified the use of Caveolin-1 immunohistochemistry as a potential marker of endothelial damage and progression degree of thrombotic microangiopathy. The aim of the present work was to evaluate Caveolin-1 as a marker of severity in thrombotic microangiopathy kidney disease, according to the ultrastructural progression of the disease evaluated by transmission electron microscopy.

Rationale & Objective: Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked genetic disorder that causes lysosomal storage of glycosphingolipids, primarily globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) and its derivative globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3), with multiorgan dysfunction including chronic kidney disease. Affected individuals may be carriers of gene variants that are of uncertain significance (GVUS). We describe kidney pathology at the early stages of FD-related kidney disease to gain insights into its association with GVUS and sex.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetic donors provide a valuable source of organs for transplantation, but the discard rate of their kidneys remains high, especially when transplanted into non-diabetic recipients.
  • A study examined the histological changes in kidney biopsies from ten non-diabetic recipients who received kidneys from diabetic donors, revealing that histological conditions varied significantly over time.
  • While some patients experienced improvements or stability in their kidney conditions, others showed worsening kidney damage, indicating that factors like recipient health and pre-existing conditions may influence the outcomes of such transplants.

The failure of arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) following intimal hyperplasia (IH) increases morbidity and mortality rates in patients undergoing hemodialysis for chronic kidney disease. The peroxisome-proliferator associated receptor (PPAR-γ) may be a therapeutic target in IH regulation. In the present study, we investigated PPAR-γ expression and tested the effect of pioglitazone, a PPAR-γ agonist, in different cell types involved in IH.

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK) is a rare pediatric renal tumor with a worse prognosis than Wilms' tumor. Although recently, BCOR internal tandem duplication (ITD) has been found as a driver mutation in more than 80% of cases, a deep molecular characterization of this tumor is still lacking, as well as its correlation with the clinical course. The aim of this study was to investigate the differential molecular signature between metastatic and localized BCOR-ITD-positive CCSK at diagnosis.

The aim of this study was to optimize a coculture in vitro model established between the human Müller glial cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells, mimicking the inner blood-retinal barrier, and to explore its resistance to damage induced by oxidative stress. A spontaneously immortalized human Müller cell line MIO-M1 and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were plated together at a density ratio 1:1 and maintained up to the 8th passage (p8). The MIO-M1/HUVECs p1 through p8 were treated with increasing concentrations (range 200-800 μM) of H O to evaluate oxidative stress induced damage and comparing data with single cell cultures.
