The present paper presents data on the major clinical symptoms ofToxoplasma oculopathy in different forms of Toxoplasma infection. It also gives the results of the authors' own laboratory studies of specimens taken from individuals with pathology of the vision organ. They confirm the data available in the literature on that toxoplasmosis frequently occurs in combination with other infections, particularly with Herpes and Cytomegalovirus, Chlamydia, Ureaplasma, and Mycoplasma infections.

The review presents data on the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in different countries and regions. It gives a comparative assessment of the methods of serodiagnosis of toxoplasmosis, which permit identification of specific immunoglobulins G, M, A, and E. The authors show a role of laboratory diagnostic techniques in the differentiation of the acute form of toxoplasmosis from its chronic form.

The role of the causative agents of Astrakhan rickettsial fever, hemorrhagic fever with the renal syndrome, Q fever, leptospirosis and listeriosis has been excluded by means of such immunochemical reactions as the direct and indirect immunofluorescent tests, the solid-phase immunoenzyme assay, the complement fixation test and the agglutination test. The relationship between the cases of hemorrhagic fever in the focus of the outbreak and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus has been demonstrated due to the use of the polymerase chain reaction with preliminary reverse transcription.

With the use of the unified indirect solid-phase fluorescent enzyme immunoassay the combined evaluation of the antigenic and immunogenic properties of experimental whole-virion inactivated virus vaccines against Venezuelan and eastern equine encephalomyelitides, as well as of dried chemical typhus vaccine, has been made; their safety was determined indirectly by the content of ovalbumin. The protective role of antibodies evaluated by the solid-phase fluorescent enzyme immunoassay in typhus immunity has been shown.

The data of the comparative study of the immunomodulating action of donor interferon and reaferon in experiments with typhus vaccine, used as an experimental model, on monkeys of different species and guinea pigs are presented. One of the main properties of interferons, besides their antiviral activity, is their capacity for producing an immunomodulating effect.

The instability of R. prowazekii strain E cultivated in chick embryos has been demonstrated. The complex of tests permitting determination of differences between various sublines of this strain in their immunogenic potency and residual virulence has been proposed.
