Complex analysis of EEG and thermographic parameters carried out in 10 healthy subjects and 34 patients, Chernobyl clean-up participants revealed a correlation between EEG and brain temperature changes in the baseline state and during mental arithmetic. During cognitive activity the maximal increase in the average EEG coherence and temperature shifts in healthy subjects were observed in the left frontotemporal and right parietotemporal areas. In patients changes in both parameters under study were most pronounced, the interhemispheric relations were impaired.

It is discussed what information can be obtained by measurements of transmembrane current harmonics to clarify the mechanism of ion transport in sodium/potassium ATPase preparations. It was shown that for studying the current harmonics upon electrostriction, the preparations should be sorbed on bilayer lipid membranes with a high modulus of elasticity.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe mechanisms of generation of capacitance current harmonics arising from bilayer electrostriction are investigated theoretically in the case when fixed charges or dipoles are located inside the bilayer. If the elastic properties of the bilayer are inhomogeneous in a transversal direction, these charges or dipoles affect substantially the amplitude A2 of the second current harmonic and accordingly the magnitude of compensatory constant voltage VC, which shold be applied to the membrane to reduce A2 to zero. In membranes whose Young's modulus is minimum at the center of bilayer, the dependence of VC on depth of immersion of the charge xA into the bilayer represents a function with alternating signs, which is reduced to zero at the center of bilayer.

Inadequate efficiency of existing therapeutic regimens and the rise of multi-drug resistant cancer cells are the main factors which require a broadening of investigations into novel anticancer strategies. Enhancement of apoptosis in tumours has been suggested recently as a new anticancer strategy.

Current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of bilayer lipid membranes formed on the support (s-BLM) were measured in static mode as well as in cyclic one with the period 33 s. The new cut of the wire from stainless stell SS-10T served as the support. In the range of voltages -0.

They are manifested substantially only for definite protein concentration and are determined by the dimensions of the zones of the distorted structure which are located near free receptor molecules as well as the receptor-substratum complex. The mechanisms of membrane and blosensors sensitivity to hormones are discussed.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe fluctuations of membrane elasticity accompanying the substratum binding and dissociation with the macromolecules incorporated into the bilayer can bear some information on constants of binding reactions as well as on the size of distortion zones around incorporated macromolecules as well as on their number in the membrane. The measurement of membrane elasticity fluctuations can be also used for the biosensors containing supported bilayers.

Bacterial protein toxins and their fragments have been isolated and purified for various reasons, including the development of efficient vaccines and for methods of identification of bacterial agents causing disease. This activity continues today but a new area of bacterial protein toxin research has recently emerged. Since it was shown that toxin molecules comprise several types of biological activity within their structural domains, it was suggested to use these domains (and their combinations) as biochemical tools for developing novel agents for disease imaging and and/or relieving.

The efficiency coefficient of the contractile system is not less than 33%, bloodflow and metabolism induce equal temperature increase. A mathematical model is proposed to calculate from noninvasive experimental data the blood flow dynamics during and after different muscle loads.

Luminescence after UV-C application is shown to decline nonexponentially, the parameters of the decline depending on irradiation dose, skin specimen and previous irradiations. If the same skin specimen is irradiated second time 3-36 hours after the first irradiation, the luminescence decline time increases from one-two minutes to more than half an hour.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA mathematical model is proposed to describe a heat wave accompanying the spreading cortical depression wave in the large brain. The model takes into account heat production of neurons, thermal transmission with thermoconductivity and volume thermal losses. The model fits well for the wave shape and permits one to estimate heat production which is about 4-20 J/g X min.

A single administration of the agent was followed by an insignificant decrease in tumor growth rate, while repeated treatment induced a complete regression of tumor in 15% of animals and resulted in a prolonged suppression of tumor growth in the others. Cells isolated from metastases which developed after the withdrawal of the drug retained susceptibility to fraction 2 of blastolysin.
