Soil moisture (SM) plays a fundamental role in the terrestrial water cycle and in agriculture, with key applications such as the monitoring of crop growing and hydrogeological management. In this study, a calibration procedure was applied to estimate SM based on the integration of in situ and airborne thermal remote sensing data. In this work, two different crop models, able to represent yield response to water, Aquacrop and SAFYE, were compared, with the aim to quantify their complexity and plasticity through Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA), using Morris and EFAST (Extended Fourier Amplitude Sensitivity Test) techniques, for moderate to strong water limited climate scenarios.

Methods: In this multicenter, retrospective chart review, 22 eyes of 18 patients who had incorrect data entered into the refractive laser computer system at the time of treatment were evaluated. Cases were analyzed to uncover the etiology of these errors, patient follow-up treatments, and final outcomes.

Transport infrastructure surveillance and monitoring by electromagnetic sensing: the ISTIMES project.

The ISTIMES project, funded by the European Commission in the frame of a joint Call "ICT and Security" of the Seventh Framework Programme, is presented and preliminary research results are discussed. The main objective of the ISTIMES project is to design, assess and promote an Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)-based system, exploiting distributed and local sensors, for non-destructive electromagnetic monitoring of critical transport infrastructures. The integration of electromagnetic technologies with new ICT information and telecommunications systems enables remotely controlled monitoring and surveillance and real time data imaging of the critical transport infrastructures.

Optimal spectral domain selection for maximizing archaeological signatures: Italy case studies.

Different landscape elements, including archaeological remains, can be automatically classified when their spectral characteristics are different, but major difficulties occur when extracting and classifying archaeological spectral features, as archaeological remains do not have unique shape or spectral characteristics. The spectral anomaly characteristics due to buried remains depend strongly on vegetation cover and/or soil types, which can make feature extraction more complicated. For crop areas, such as the test sites selected for this study, soil and moisture changes within near-surface archaeological deposits can influence surface vegetation patterns creating spectral anomalies of various kinds.

Hyperspectral Sensor Data Capability for Retrieving Complex Urban Land Cover in Comparison with Multispectral Data: Venice City Case Study (Italy).

This study aims at comparing the capability of different sensors to detect land cover materials within an historical urban center. The main objective is to evaluate the added value of hyperspectral sensors in mapping a complex urban context. In this study we used: (a) the ALI and Hyperion satellite data, (b) the LANDSAT ETM+ satellite data, (c) MIVIS airborne data and (d) the high spatial resolution IKONOS imagery as reference.

Road Asphalt Pavements Analyzed by Airborne Thermal Remote Sensing: Preliminary Results of the Venice Highway.

This paper describes a fast procedure for evaluating asphalt pavement surface defects using airborne emissivity data. To develop this procedure, we used airborne multispectral emissivity data covering an urban test area close to Venice (Italy).For this study, we first identify and select the roads' asphalt pavements on Multispectral Infrared Visible Imaging Spectrometer (MIVIS) imagery using a segmentation procedure.

Although presbyopia is ostensibly an age-related disease of the lens, ciliary body, and zonular apparatus, surgeons have nonetheless persevered in their attempts to create a solution to the problem of diminished near vision by performing keratorefractive procedures. This article discusses two approaches of varying technological sophistication, beginning with surgically induced astigmatism and continuing through enhanced monovision. Sometimes simple solutions are the best, and the technological innovation in cataract and refractive surgery has met with unrivalled success in the last three decades.

Neuropsychiatric lupus syndromes: relationship with antiphospholipid antibodies.

The authors assessed the prevalence of neuropsychiatric manifestations occurring in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE), according to the American College of Rheumatology standardized definitions for NPSLE, and evaluated the relationship between NPSLE and antiphospholipid antibodies. Sixty-one consecutive SLE patients were studied. Neuropsychiatric manifestations consistent with the diagnosis of NPSLE occurred in 44 (72%).

Aim: In coronary heart disease, the surgical therapy of choice is the construction of an artenal bypass of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) using the internal thoracic artery 8ITA). We define age dependent normal values for the ITA such as diameter of the lumen (LD), peak systolic (Vs) and diastolic (Vd) flow velocity and the ratio of these two values (SDR) measured by duplex ultrasound. Furthermore, the modification and pathological changes of the Doppler curve after minimal invasive bypass of the LAD (MIDCAB) are described.

Thirty-six representative velogenic strains of Newcastle disease virus isolated in Italy since 1960 were characterized by restriction site and partial sequence analyses of the fusion protein gene. Viruses belonging to the six known genotypes of Lomniczi et al . were found.

Adenovirus-associated haemorrhagic disease in guinea fowl.

Nine outbreaks of a disease affecting 2 to 5-month-old guinea fowl, characterized by slight depression and sudden deaths, are described. Gross haemorrhages in the serosa and muscles were constantly observed. Histologically nuclear inclusion bodies, similar to those observed in avian adenovirosis group II were detected in the spleen of affected animals.

[Primary hyperaldosteronism: our experience with 34 patients].

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is a relative new endocrine disease that account for almost 1-2% of the hypertensive population. In spite of the large number of reports there is still disagreement around the preoperative diagnosis and surgical treatment. In a nineteen year period from 1970 to 1989, 34 patients came to our Department with a diagnosis of Primary Aldosteronism.

Cavernous sinus syndrome as the initial manifestation of multiple myeloma.

A 76-year-old man developed a cavernous sinus syndrome as the initial manifestation of multiple myeloma. Although clinically the patient had stage IA disease, which is typically associated with a favorable response to therapy, his disease was rapidly fatal. This case emphasizes a weakness of the traditional staging system because it does not take into account certain clinical and histopathologic aspects of myeloma relevant to extramedullary plasmacytomas.
