Historically, botanical preparations have been used to improve human health. Their active ingredients are influenced by multiple factors such as intraspecies variations, environmental conditions, collection time and methods, and the part of the plant used. To ensure the efficiency and safety of these herbal drugs, qualitative and quantitative analyses are required.

Around 252 million years ago (Late Permian), Earth experienced one of its most significant drought periods, coinciding with a global climate crisis, resulting in a devastating loss of forest trees with no hope of recovery. In the current epoch (Anthropocene), the worsening of drought stress is expected to significantly affect forest communities. Despite extensive efforts, there is significantly less research at the molecular level on forest trees than on annual crop species.

Article Synopsis
  • Young animals, especially songbirds, focus on learning motor skills, like singing, during their juvenile phase.
  • Research shows a decrease in spike rate variability during song learning, indicating a shift from broad neural control to more precise motor coding typical of adult singers.
  • Despite variations in overall spike rates, young songbirds exhibit precise timing in neural coding similar to adults, suggesting that early variability in performance is more about experimentation than lack of control.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare the motor examinations done by the clinical neurosurgery team with the ISNCSCI assessments, since the latter can be time-consuming and impractical during acute spinal cord injuries.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from the TRACK-SCI registry, which included 72 pairs of motor examinations from 63 patients, and found strong correlations between the two methods, indicating that neurosurgery motor examinations can effectively substitute for ISNCSCI exams.
  • - The results showed a very high agreement between the scores from both types of examinations with low bias, suggesting that clinical neurosurgery evaluations are reliable for assessing neurological function after spinal cord injuries.

Introduction: Among all patients with hypertension, those with resistant hypertension (RH) have the highest rates of subclinical organ damage (SOD). The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is high in RH patients, and it could contribute to SOD. We aimed to investigate how OSA and its treatment are related to SOD in a large cohort of RH patients.

As a result of global warming and climate change, the number and intensity of weather events such as droughts, heat waves, and floods are increasing, resulting in major losses in crop yield worldwide. Combined with the accumulation of different pollutants, this situation is leading to a gradual increase in the complexity of environmental factors affecting plants. We recently used the term 'multifactorial stress combination' (MFSC) to describe the impact of three or more stressors occurring simultaneously or sequentially on plants.

As North America is largely industrialized with a variety of available private transportation options, trauma is a common occurrence, resulting in significant burdens of disability and costs to the health care system. To meet increasing trauma care needs, there is a robust organization of trauma and rehabilitation systems, particularly within the United States and Canada. The American and Canadian health care systems share multiple similarities, including well-equipped Level I trauma centers, specialized inpatient rehabilitation units for polytrauma patients, and thorough evaluations for recovery and post-discharge placement.

A series of Au(I) complexes containing unsymmetrical N-heterocyclic carbene (imidazolylidene and benzimidazolylidene) functionalized with a xyloside group and an alkyl moiety (methyl and mesityl) was prepared using efficient procedures from D-xylose. Their characterization was carried out in solution by multinuclear NMR, HR-MS spectrometry and cyclic voltammetry, as well as in the solid state by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis for two of them. Evaluation of their ability to inhibit bacterial growth showed a preference for a Gram-positive strain, Staphylococcus aureus, over a Gram-negative strain, Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Improvements in self-pollinated crops rely on crosses between different genotypes. It has been suggested that the repeated use of "the best" genotypes may lead to the restriction of the genetic diversity of the crop. In wheat, the analysis of gliadin (storage protein) polymorphism has provided evidence that genetic diversity was high and stable throughout the 20th century.

Background: There is a close relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and resistant hypertension (RH). However, studies assessing the long-term effect of diagnosing and treating OSA on blood pressure (BP) control in these patients are lacking.

Methods: To address this gap, we recruited 478 RH patients from hypertension units and followed them prospectively after they were screened for OSA through a sleep study.

Background: Although many molecules have been investigated as biomarkers for spinal cord injury (SCI) or ischemic stroke, none of them are specifically induced in central nervous system (CNS) neurons following injuries with low baseline expression. However, neuronal injury constitutes a major pathology associated with SCI or stroke and strongly correlates with neurological outcomes. Biomarkers characterized by low baseline expression and specific induction in neurons post-injury are likely to better correlate with injury severity and recovery, demonstrating higher sensitivity and specificity for CNS injuries compared to non-neuronal markers or pan-neuronal markers with constitutive expressions.

Plants growing under natural conditions experience high light (HL) intensities that are often accompanied by elevated temperatures. These conditions could affect photosynthesis, reduce yield, and negatively impact agricultural productivity. The combination of different abiotic challenges creates a new type of stress for plants by generating complex environmental conditions that often exceed the impact of their individual parts.

Global warming, climate change, and industrial pollution are altering our environment subjecting plants, microbiomes, and ecosystems to an increasing number and complexity of abiotic stress conditions, concurrently or sequentially. These conditions, termed, "multifactorial stress combination" (MFSC), can cause a significant decline in plant growth and survival. However, the impacts of MFSC on reproductive tissues and yield of major crop plants are largely unknown.

The complexity of environmental conditions encountered by plants in the field, or in nature, is gradually increasing due to anthropogenic activities that promote global warming, climate change, and increased levels of pollutants. While in the past it seemed sufficient to study how plants acclimate to one or even two different stresses affecting them simultaneously, the complex conditions developing on our planet necessitate a new approach of studying stress in plants: Acclimation to multiple stress conditions occurring concurrently or consecutively (termed, multifactorial stress combination [MFSC]). In an initial study of the plant response to MFSC, conducted with Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings subjected to an MFSC of six different abiotic stresses, it was found that with the increase in the number and complexity of different stresses simultaneously impacting a plant, plant growth and survival declined, even if the effects of each stress involved in such MFSC on the plant was minimal or insignificant.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSAfter viewing video vignettes of human interactions with a novel soft growing robot, we found that participants reported fewer perceived safety hazards, less anxiety and fear about robots, reduced social hesitancy about human-robot collaboration (HRC), and lower technology-induced fears of job insecurity. Unlike prior research with traditional rigid manipulators, we found that the manipulated proximity of the human-robot interactions was unrelated to any of these outcomes, suggesting closer interactions may be possible without adverse psychological resistance. On the other hand, fear of robots, perceived hazards, technology-induced job insecurity, and robot anxiety were all significantly lower when human-robot interactions were slower.

The complexity of environmental factors affecting crops in the field is gradually increasing due to climate change-associated weather events, such as droughts or floods combined with heat waves, coupled with the accumulation of different environmental and agricultural pollutants. The impact of multiple stress conditions on plants was recently termed "multifactorial stress combination" (MFSC) and defined as the occurrence of 3 or more stressors that impact plants simultaneously or sequentially. We recently reported that with the increased number and complexity of different MFSC stressors, the growth and survival of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) seedlings declines, even if the level of each individual stress is low enough to have no significant effect on plants.
