Traumatic lateral dislocations of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint are very rare. A 44-year-old male was referred after a motorcycle to car accident because of an exposed head of the left first metatarsal through a laceration on the medial aspect of the first MTP joint. Radiographs showed a lateral dislocation of the first MTP joint, with concomitant fractures of the neck of the second metatarsal and the base of the third and fourth metatarsal bones.

A variety of surgical procedures exist for the correction of hammertoe deformities, and several different methods of flexor tendon transfer have been described for the correction of hammertoes associated with extension contracture of the corresponding metatarsophalangeal joint. In the present report, we have described a variation of flexor tendon tenodesis we have found useful.

Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) has evolved over time and modern 3-component implants offer good and reliable clinical results. Despite recent improvements, TAA is still associated with a relatively high incidence of complications. Surgeon experience seems to play the most important role.

Background: Arthrodesis of the first metatarso-phalangeal (MTP-1) joint is a widely accepted procedure for the treatment of hallux valgus in patients with MTP-1 degeneration, severe or recurrent deformity, or inflammatory arthritis. This study aimed to evaluate if an additional more proximal correction was beneficial in cases with a severely increased intermetatarsal 1-2 angle (IMA 1-2).

Methods: A consecutive series of 18 feet (4 bilateral, all females; mean age, 61 years) with severe hallux valgus and an increased IMA 1-2 treated by MTP-1 fusion and an additional more proximal correction (Mau osteotomy or modified Lapidus procedure) was evaluated.

Background: Total ankle arthroplasty has evolved over the past decade, and newer three-component implants have demonstrated favorable clinical results and improved survivorship. The present study analyzed the clinical and radiographic results of the first 240 total ankle arthroplasties performed by the authors with one of these new three-component prostheses.

Methods: Two hundred and forty consecutive primary total ankle arthroplasties were performed in 233 patients (115 women and 118 men; mean age, 61.

The number of studies reporting on outcomes after total ankle arthroplasty is continuously increasing. As the use of valid outcome measures represents the cornerstone for successful clinical research, we aimed to identify the most frequently used outcome instruments in ankle arthroplasty studies and to analyze the evidence to support their use in terms of different quality criteria. A systematic review of the literature identified 15 outcome instruments reported in 79 original studies.

Background: The purpose of this study was to cross-culturally adapt the Foot Function Index (FFI) for use in German-speaking patients with foot complaints.

Materials And Methods: The FFI was adapted for the German language according to the recommended forward/backward translation protocol. The following metric properties were assessed in 53 consecutive patients (mean age, 57.

Background: There is a lack of detailed information about habitual physical activity levels and the sports participation of patients after total ankle arthroplasty.

Hypothesis: The proportion of sports active patients increases after total ankle arthroplasty, and the majority of patients will meet current recommendations for health-enhancing physical activity.

Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.

Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of anterior tibial tendon (ATT) abnormalities.

Materials And Methods: Institutional review board approval was not necessary for review of patient images and was granted for examination of the volunteers; informed consent was obtained. MR imaging findings in 28 consecutive patients (20 women, eight men; mean age, 63.

Until 1995, fusion was in our institution the only rational surgical option for a severe ankle arthrosis. Consistent reports about good mid- and long-term results with ankle replacement allowed us to change our minds. Ankle replacement became the gold standard and fusion was then almost totally banished.

For active patients, surgery is usually the preferred treatment for an acute Achilles tendon rupture. Classical open techniques require a long tendon exposure, which can result in damage to its blood supply and gliding structures. Adhesions may form, which impair the final functional result.
