Evaluation of Prenatal Comfort, Sleep, and Quality of Life in Pregnant Women with Cholestasis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is the most prevalent liver disease that women typically experience during pregnancy. This study aimed to evaluate prenatal comfort, sleep, and quality of life in pregnant women with cholestasis.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was implemented between November 2022 and June 2023 at Mardin Training and Research Hospital with 150 pregnant women who received a diagnosis of pregnancy-induced intrahepatic cholestasis and agreed to participate.

Arginine, symmetric and asymmetric dimethylarginine levels in canine leishmaniasis.

The study aimed to investigate the levels of arginine, symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA), and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in dogs with canine leishmaniasis (CanL) and their relationship with some renal and cardiovascular parameters. A total of 60 dogs were enrolled, including 40 with CanL and 20 healthy controls. The CanL group was divided into four stages based on clinical and laboratory findings.

Green biosynthesis, characterization, and cytotoxic effect of magnetic iron nanoparticles using Brassica Oleracea var capitata sub var rubra (red cabbage) aqueous peel extract.

The green method of nanoparticle synthesis, which is an environment and living-friendly method, is an updated subject that has appeared as an alternative to conventional methods such as physical and chemical synthesis. In this presented study, the green synthesis of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) from iron (III) chloride by using aqueous peel extract has been reported. The prepared IONPs were characterized with fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS), zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX).

Evaluation inflammatory markers of hemogram parameters in primary ovarian insufficiency.

Objective: In most of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) cases, etiologic factors have not been fully elucidated. Recent studies have revealed that inflammatory agents play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of POI. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of inflammatory markers of hemogram parameters in POI.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles via Cynara scolymus leaf extracts: The characterization, anticancer potential with photodynamic therapy in MCF7 cells.

In this study, we report on the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from the leaf extracts of Cynara scolymus (Artichoke) using microwave irradiation and the evaluation of its anti-cancer potential with photodynamic therapy (PDT). Silver nanoparticles formation was characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Silver nanoparticles formation was also investigated the surface charge, particle size and distribution using zetasizer analysis.

Oxidative Status and Lipid Profile among Dogs at Different Stages of Visceral Leishmaniasis.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate the oxidative status and lipid profile among dogs at different stages of visceral leishmaniasis (VL).

Methods: Dogs with VL were divided into four groups according to the classification reported by the Leishvet group: stage I (n=9), stage II (n=11), stage III (n=6), and stage IV (n=6); these dogs were compared to healthy control dogs (n=14). The lipid profile [high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, and triglyceride levels) and oxidative status [total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) activity] were evaluated.

Clinical characteristics of Crouzon syndrome.

Crouzon syndrome (CS) is an genetic disorder with autosomal dominant inheritance caused by mutation of the gene for fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) was described as one of the varieties of craniosynostosis. In this presented case, premature closure of the sutures had caused restricted skull growth and lack of space for the growing brain resulted to shallowed eyes and cranial and ophthalmic deformities and impairment in tooth development. Management of a patient of CS has two components.

Heart-Type Fatty Acid Binding Protein and Ischemia-Modified Albumin for Detection of Myocardial Infarction After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery.

Background: Heart-type fatty acid binding protein (hFABP) and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) have been put forward as novel biomarkers to detect myocardial injury shortly after onset of ischemia. We compared hFABP and IMA with cardiac troponin I (cTnI) for speed and reliability in the diagnosis of perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI) after coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG).

Methods: In all, 210 consecutive patients undergoing isolated CABG with cardiopulmonary bypass were enrolled in a prospective study.

Seroprevalence of Canine Leishmaniasis in Northern Cyprus.

Objective: Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is an important public and veterinary health problem in Mediterranean Basin countries. In this study, we aimed to determine the seroprevalence of CanL in several provinces of Northern Cyprus.

Methods: The seroprevalence of CanL was determined by the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test in dog sera.

Evaluation of conjunctival swab sampling in the diagnosis of canine leishmaniasis: A two-year follow-up study in Çukurova Plain, Turkey.

The diagnosis of canine leishmaniasis (CanL) in symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs is a very important and problematic public health issue in Turkey. A longitudinal study was carried out on dogs in selected villages in the Çukurova Plain in Turkey, from July 2011 to June 2013, where cutaneous (CL) and visceral (VL) leishmaniasis is endemic. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of CanL and to evaluate the early diagnostic performance of the non-invasive conjunctival swab nested PCR (CS n-PCR) test in comparison with the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT).

Detection of Leishmania major and Leishmania tropica in domestic cats in the Ege Region of Turkey.

Leishmaniosis is a group of diseases caused by different species of Leishmania parasites in mammalian species. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of Leishmania spp. DNA in cats using real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays targeting internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) and heat-shock protein 70 gene (Hsp70) regions with Leishmania species-specific primers and probes.

Translation of Supportive Care Needs Survey Short Form 34 (SCNS-SF34) into Italian and cultural validation study.

Background: The Supportive Care Needs Survey (SCNS) is one of the most comprehensive tools used in the clinical trials to measure the perceived unmet supportive care needs of cancer patients. The original 59-item instrument was developed and validated in English using rigorous methods. A short version containing 34 items was subsequently developed by the same authors (SCNS-SF34) and has since been translated into numerous other languages and validated, confirming its psychometrically robust properties.

Low Incidence of Paravalvular Leakage With the Balloon-Expandable Sapien 3 Transcatheter Heart Valve.

Background: We evaluated the clinical and hemodynamic performance of the new balloon-expandable Sapien 3 (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, CA) transcatheter heart valve (S3 THV).

Methods: Between April 2013 and January 2015, 54 consecutive high-risk patients presenting with aortic stenosis were treated with the new S3 THV. Clinical and hemodynamic data as well as device and procedure variables were obtained at baseline, intraoperatively and at 30-days according to Valve Academic Research Consortium-2.

Flavonoids from Sideritis Species: Human Monoamine Oxidase (hMAO) Inhibitory Activities, Molecular Docking Studies and Crystal Structure of Xanthomicrol.

The inhibitory effects of flavonoids on monoamine oxidases (MAOs) have attracted great interest since alterations in monoaminergic transmission are reported to be related to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases and psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety, thus MAOs may be considered as targets for the treatment of these multi-factorial diseases. In the present study, four Sideritis flavonoids, xanthomicrol (1), isoscutellarein 7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-β-D-allopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), isoscutellarein 7-O-[6'''-O-acetyl-β-D-allopyranosyl-(1→2)]-6''-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (3) and salvigenin (4) were docked computationally into the active site of the human monoamine oxidase isoforms (hMAO-A and hMAO-B) and were also investigated for their hMAO inhibitory potencies using recombinant hMAO isoenzymes. The flavonoids inhibited hMAO-A selectively and reversibly in a competitive mode.

Transapical transcatheter aortic valve for severe aortic regurgitation: expanding the limits.

Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the self-expandable ACURATE TA device (Symetis SA, Ecublens, Switzerland) in a cohort of patients with pure aortic regurgitation (AR).

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has been initially considered as an alternative for high-risk patients with aortic stenosis. Although the current experience is limited, TAVR might be also an alternative to treat patients with pure, severe AR.

Cardioprotective and prognostic effects of remote ischaemic preconditioning in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery: a single-centre randomised, double-blind, controlled trial.

Background: Remote ischaemic preconditioning has been associated with reduced risk of myocardial injury after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. We investigated the safety and efficacy of this procedure.

Methods: Eligible patients were those scheduled to undergo elective isolated first-time CABG surgery under cold crystalloid cardioplegia and cardiopulmonary bypass at the West-German Heart Centre, Essen, Germany, between April, 2008, and October, 2012.

Noninvasive assessment of subclinical atherosclerosis in normotensive gravidae with gestational diabetes.

Aim: Carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT), hyperhomocysteinemia, microalbuminuria, and nitric oxide reflect subclinical atherosclerosis and predict the risk of future cardiovascular events. We aimed to evaluate the presence of subclinical atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction in normotensive patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) noninvasively.

Patients And Methods: We enrolled 41 normotensive patients with GDM and 44 healthy gravidae in the study.

An unusual case of cavernous hemangioma of the rib in a young man with lung tuberculosis: a brief review and case report.

Hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors that usually involve the liver, skin, eyes and central nervous system. Hemangioma of the bone is unusual and is generally observed in the vertebrae or skull while hemangioma of the costae is extremely rare. Hemangioma of the rib and chest wall tuberculosis may be misdiagnosed as chest wall tumors.

Evaluation of hepatitis B viraemia levels in patients with HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

Objectives: To evaluate patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and low-level viraemia in terms of determining HBV DNA cut-off values and levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and other possible markers for discriminating between chronic hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg)-negative patients and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) inactive carriers.

Methods: HBV-infected patients who were HBeAg-negative with undetectable HBV DNA by standard hybridization assay and high (HBeAg-negative group, n = 81) or normal (HBsAg inactive carrier group, n = 77) ALT levels were enrolled. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay using a COBAS Amplicor HBV monitor test was performed to detect low HBV DNA levels.

A new self-expandable transcatheter aortic valve for transapical implantation: feasibility in acute and chronic animal experiments.

Objectives: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is currently expanding worldwide, however all available prostheses share some fundamental design drawbacks. We investigated the feasibility, safety and hemodynamic performance of the innovative transapical Acurate TA™ self-expandable device, which has the unique advantage of offering anatomically correct self-alignment within the aortic root.

Design: Transapical TAVI was performed in six acute swine and six chronic sheep procedures, with follow-up of 7, 14, 21, 28, 60 and 90 days.

Remote ischemic preconditioning: the surgeon's perspective.

Since cardiac surgery began, surgeons have aimed to find methods of minimizing myocardial injury resulting from ischemia and reperfusion. The concept of somehow conditioning the heart in order to attenuate ischemia and reperfusion-related injury has evolved in cardiovascular research over decades, from ischemic preconditioning and postconditioning to, more recently, remote ischemic preconditioning (and postconditioning). Although many strategies have proven to be beneficial in the experimental arena, a few have been successfully translated into clinical practice.

The role of homocysteine, asymmetric dimethylarginine and nitric oxide in pre-eclampsia.

Nitric oxide (NO) contributes to vasodilatation that is observed during normal pregnancy. Hyperhomocysteinaemia (HHcy) is a vascular risk factor associated with placental microvascular diseases and pre-eclampsia. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), an endogenous inhibitor of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS) has been linked to endothelial dysfunction.

Tuberous sclerosis presented with polycystic kidney disease and acute renal failure.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hamartomatous involvement of multiple organs such as the skin, central nervous system, kidneys, lungs, and heart. A linkage has been found with a locus on the long arm of chromosome 9 (9q34) and with a locus on the short arm of chromosome 16 (16p13). TSC has a birth incidence of 1/6000.

Prognostic significance of cardiac troponin I on admission for surgical treatment of acute pulmonary embolism: a single-centre experience over more than 10 years.

Objectives: Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a highly sensitive, specific marker for myocardial cell injury. We sought to determine whether cTnI on admission may help to identify patients with increased risk of open surgical embolectomy with acute pulmonary embolism (PE).

Methods: Forty-six consecutive patients with confirmed acute PE were enrolled in this prospective study.
