Purpose Of The Review: Penthrox® (inhaled methoxyflurane, IMF) is an inhaled analgesic used for the treatment of moderate-to-severe acute pain. It has various advantages including the capacity for being self-administered in the presence of healthcare providers (HCPs), rapid onset and offset, and having documented evidence for minimal adverse events post-use. In a variety of non-oncological settings such as pre-hospital transport and minor outpatient procedures, amongst others, IMF has significantly reduced acute pain.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) is a common problem for cancer patients receiving radiotherapy, leading to symptoms like redness, skin peeling, and pain.
  • A systematic review examined 235 studies, mostly randomized controlled trials, to assess various interventions for treating and preventing ARD.
  • Many interventions received low recommendations due to poor evidence quality, but therapies like photobiomodulation, Mepitel® film, and certain medications showed promising results; further consensus recommendations will be published later.

Acute radiation dermatitis is a frequent adverse effect of radiotherapy, but standardisation of care for acute radiation dermatitis is lacking. Due to the conflicting evidence and variability in current guidelines, a four-round Delphi consensus process was used to compile opinions of 42 international experts on care for people with acute radiation dermatitis on the basis of the evidence in existing medical literature. Interventions for acute radiation dermatitis prevention or management that reached at least 75% consensus were recommended for clinical use.
