Infections of intact and damaged skin barriers and keratin are frequently associated with complex biofilm communities containing bacteria and fungi, yet there are limited options for successful management. This study intended to focus on the utility of some novel proprietary lactam molecules, quorum sensing (QS)-derived halogenated furanones, which act to block the QS pathway, against key fungal pathogens of the skin (Candida albicans, Malassezia furfur and Microsporum gypseum). Moreover, we aimed to assess how these actives performed against complex interkingdom biofilms in a clinically relevant model.

Design: Prospective, longitudinal, observational study.
Participants: Between November 2015 and March 2023, individuals with MPS were recruited from Ophthalmology clinics at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, United Kingdom.
Mouse kidney parvovirus (MKPV) infection can cause significant morbidity and mortality by inducing moderate to severe inclusion body nephropathy and kidney fibrosis in aged immunodeficient mice. However, MKPV infection in immunocompetent mice is associated with histopathologic findings ranging from absent to minimal or moderate lymphoplasmacytic interstitial nephritis without inclusion body in most cases. We surveyed the prevalence of MKPV via PCR from August 2019 through January 2021, using feces, kidneys, and livers collected and pooled from 2 sentinel mice [Crl:CD1(ICR)] (CD1) per surveillance cage (a total of 212 cages).

Aim: Explore the feasibility of implementing an error reporting system in a home-based palliative care program in Toronto, Canada, and describe the possible factors that may influence uptake.
Design: A convergent mixed-methods approach was used.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity amongst trauma patients. Its treatment is focused on minimizing progression to secondary injury. Administration of propranolol for TBI maydecrease mortality and improve functional outcomes.

We now report the pathological findings in a 67 kg, 6-year-old, adult female Boer goat that presented with neurological signs (ie, head pressing, unsteadiness and paddling) and hyperthermia 2 days prior to death. Lack of therapeutic response to meloxicam and penicillin‒streptomycin and poor prognosis led to euthanasia of the animal.

Early detection and treatment are imperative to reduce the risk of stroke, however, there is significant variation amongst centers and trauma care providers in the specific medical management strategy used. This study compares antiplatelets vs.

Surgical meshes, which may be synthetic, bio-synthetic, or biological, decrease recurrence and, resultingly, their use has become standard. While most patients are greatly benefited, mesh represents a permanently implanted foreign body.

Design: Open cohort study.
Setting And Participants: Adults who had an ascites-related procedure (ARP) between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2015 (ie, pre-POCUS) and January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020 (ie, POCUS).
Background: Granulomatous hepatitis (GH) is a form of chronic hepatitis (CH) in dogs for which limited information is published.
Hypothesis: Describe the clinical presentation, clinical pathology, ultrasound, and hepatic histopathology findings and to report survival times in dogs with GH.
Animals: Twenty-nine client-owned dogs with GH.
Objective: To scope and synthesise literature around the job satisfaction of early career midwives - those in their first five years of post-qualification practice - including the effect on their career aspirations and intention to leave the profession.
Design: Scoping review.
Methods: Relevant databases were searched for published research studies and grey literature.
Background: Resuscitative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is an emerging POCUS modality that can be used to guide trauma resuscitation.
Methods: Trauma patients who underwent TEE within 24 h of admission from 2013 to 2022 were prospectively identified. We retrospectively analyzed resuscitative TEE reports and patient charts in duplicate.
Purpose: Trauma team leaders (TTLs) have traditionally been general surgeons; however, some trauma centres use a mixed model of care where both surgeons and non-surgeons (primarily emergency physicians) perform this role. The objective of this multicentre study was to provide a well-powered study to determine if TTL specialty is associated with mortality among major trauma patients.
Methods: Data were collected from provincial trauma registries at six level 1 trauma centres across Canada over a 10-year period.
Background: Severe complicated intra-abdominal sepsis (SCIAS) has an increasing incidence with mortality rates over 80% in some settings. Mortality typically results from disruption of the gastrointestinal tract, progressive and self-perpetuating bio-mediator generation, systemic inflammation, and multiple organ failure. A further therapeutic option may be open abdomen (OA) management with negative peritoneal pressure therapy (NPPT) to remove inflammatory ascites and attenuate the systemic damage from SCIAS, although there are definite risks of leaving the abdomen open whenever it might possibly be closed.

Simple visual reaction times (RTs) are highly sensitive to the presence of transient activity. Transient and sustained visual mechanisms generate different RT versus contrast functions because they have different gains. To identify non-chromatic (transient) activity, we can compare RT versus contrast functions obtained with either fast or slow onset stimuli.

The role of high dose IV TXA (≥2 g or ≥30 mg/kg as a single bolus) has been evaluated in the surgical setting, however, it has not been studied in trauma. We reviewed the available evidence of high dose IV TXA in any setting with the goal of informing its use in the adult trauma population.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute care surgery (ACS) is an area of surgical specialization within general surgery and a model for clinical care delivery that has proliferated over the last 2 decades. Models of ACS in Canada exist in both academic and community settings and are used to manage patients in need of emergency general surgery (EGS) care, with or without the provision of trauma care. The implementation of the ACS model has changed the landscape of patient care, surgical education and the workforce, providing an option for some general surgeons to exclude EGS care from their regular practice.

The central nervous system can be involved via a hematogenous route but involvement of the cavernous sinus (CS) is rare and can be misdiagnosed as other pathology of primary neoplastic, infective, or vascular origin. We present a case of a 73-year-old gentleman with painless jaundice and subjective heaviness to his eyes that progressed to partial ptosis of the left eye, complete ptosis of the right eye with diplopia, found to have disseminated Burkitt's lymphoma with bilateral deposits to the CS.

Currently in Canada, only a limited number of acute care surgery services have dedicated daytime operating room (OR) access; hence, we aimed to describe the burden of after-hours EGS operating in Canada and differences associated with OR access.
Methods: In this multicentre retrospective cohort study, we used data from a previously conducted study designed to evaluate nonappendiceal, nonbiliary disease across 8 Canadian hospitals.
Dysregulation of the BCL-2 family is implicated in protecting chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) cells from intracellular damage and BCR::ABL1-inhibition with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and may be a viable therapeutic target in blast phase (BP-)CML, for which treatment options are limited. BH3 mimetics, a class of small molecule inhibitors with high-specificity against the prosurvival members of the BCL-2 family, have displayed clinical promise in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic and acute myeloid leukemia as single agents and in combination with standard-of-care therapies. Here we present the first comparison of inhibition of BCL-2 prosurvival proteins BCL-2, BCL-xL and MCL-1 in combination with a second or third generation TKI, crucially with comparisons drawn between myeloid and lymphoid BP-CML samples.
