Recent marine heatwaves have had pervasive effects on marine ecosystems, from declines in primary production to die-offs of top predators. Seabird mortalities are often observed in association with heatwaves, but population impacts are not well understood. In this work, we report the rapid mortality of approximately half of Alaska's common murre () population in response to an extreme marine heatwave.

Limited research describes approaches for applying a public health lens to fatal child maltreatment classification. Specialized terminology and tools could help improve consistency in classifying deaths resulting from caregiver behavior. Enteroaggregative (EAEC) is a common form of that causes gastroenteritis and diarrhea worldwide. Biofilm formation on the intestinal mucosa initiates an inflammatory cascade in the gastrointestinal tissue, which has significant destructive effects on the mucosa of the small and large intestines. Small bowel obstruction and perforation due to a foreign body are uncommon, but the risk increases with pre-existing conditions such as the presence of intestinal strictures, inflammation, and mucosal ulceration.

Nociceptive somatosensory neurons densely innervate and intimately interact with epidermal cells to receive these cues, however the mechanisms by which epidermal interactions shape processing of noxious inputs is still poorly understood. Here, we identify a role for dendrite intercalation between epidermal cells in tuning sensitivity of Drosophila larvae to noxious mechanical stimuli.

Background: Certain widely used pathological outcome prediction models that were developed in tertiary centers tend to overpredict outcomes in the community setting; thus, the Michigan Urological-Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MUSIC) model was developed in general urology practice to address this issue. Additionally, the development of these models involved a relatively small proportion of Black men, potentially compromising the accuracy of predictions in this patient group. We tested the validity of the MUSIC and three widely used nomograms to compare their overall and race-stratified predictive performance.

Mosquito-borne diseases account for nearly 1 million human deaths annually, yet we have a limited understanding of developmental events that influence host-seeking behavior and pathogen transmission in mosquitoes. Mosquito-borne pathogens are transmitted during blood meals, hence adult mosquito behavior and physiology have been intensely studied. However, events during larval development shape adult traits, larvae respond to many of the same sensory cues as adults, and larvae are susceptible to infection by many of the same disease-causing agents as adults.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to conduct a scoping review to examine and summarize the characteristics of research related to mental health (MH) screenings and/or referrals to treatment in dental practices.

Methods: We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for Scoping Reviews and searched multiple databases for terms connected with dental care, MH concerns, screening, and referral. Included articles: (1) described care provided in a dental practice, (2) described a situation where the patient is experiencing the potential MH problem, (3) did not involve dental anxiety exclusively, and (4) involved some form of MH screening and/or referral to treatment.

Purpose: To study familial factors associated with child maltreatment in a birth population, Alaska piloted a mixed-design method that linked child welfare data with the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS). We replicated this approach in Oregon and validated it in both states.

Expressed protein ligation (EPL) allows for the attachment of a synthetic peptide into the N- or C-terminus of a recombinant protein fragment to generate a site-specifically modified protein with substantial yields for biochemical and biophysical studies. In this method, multiple posttranslational modifications (PTMs) can be incorporated into a synthetic peptide containing an N-terminal Cysteine, which selectively reacts with a protein C-terminal thioester to afford an amide bond formation. However, the requirement of a Cysteine at the ligation site can limit EPL's potential applications.
