To investigate the role of the Djibouti-Ethiopian railway as a potential vehicle for inter-regional spread of malaria vectors and malaria parasites, we performed a double-sided study, both entomological and parasitological, during November 1989, at the frontier post of Guelile where the trains from Ethiopia enter the Republic of Djibouti. No malaria-transmitting mosquitoes were collected either from the daily passenger train or from the weekly vegetables train. One hundred and five passengers entering Djibouti by train from Ethiopia had a thick film examined for malaria parasites.

Synopsis Transparent formulations of a liposoluble sunscreen in an aqueous medium were studied, taking into account the different chemicals of a selected system situated in the vertices of a regular tetrahedron: sunscreen agent, co-solvent, (surfactants +/- mineral oil) mixture (in the tetrahedron base) and water as the fourth component. Several compositions were selected at optimized component ratios after which water was added progressively. Clear gel and liquid compositions were obtained yielding a sunscreen agent that it suitable for conventional use.

A case-referent study of birth defects was nested in a prevalence survey of adverse reproductive outcomes carried out among 8867 floriculture workers in Bogotá, Colombia. A total of 535 children born to these workers and reported by their parents as malformed and 1070 children selected at random as referents were invited to a medical examination including consultation with a geneticist and a clinical teratologist and a review of the medical records. Seventy-six percent of both groups attended the examination.

A prevalence survey of adverse reproductive outcomes was carried out in a population of 8867 persons (2951 men and 5916 women) who had been working in the floriculture industry in the Bogotá area of Colombia for at least six months. These workers were exposed to 127 different types of pesticides. The prevalence rates for abortion, prematurity, stillbirths, and malformations were estimated for pregnancies occurring among the female workers and the wives of the male workers before and after they started working in floriculture, and these rates were related to various degrees of exposure.

We report the first prenatal diagnosis of myotonic dystrophy (MD) in Spain by DNA techniques. The previous familiar study allowed us to determine the DM haplotype in this family with the following probe/enzyme combinations: p4.1/Msp I, LDR 152/Bgl II, Apo CII/Ban I, Taq I, Bam HI, pSCII/Bgl I.

The results obtained have been interpreted in relation to the properties of the reaction media. Microemulsions with constant oil-to-surface active mixture weight ratios (R(o/s)) and different concentrations of water were chosen as reaction media.

We emphasize the importance of preoperative diagnosis and review the diagnostic methods available for revealing this uncommon eventuality. Owing to the prognostic importance and subsequent surgical treatment, this possibility should be evaluated in those cases of renal pelvis transitional cell carcinoma with extensive parenchymatous invasion or in those cases in which kidney function cancellation occurs in the excretory urograph.

They show the cause of the perforation and warn against this type of complication in the above-mentioned surgery.

The positive and negative ion fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectra of four glycolipids obtained from microbial cultures are reported. The spectra of the glycolipids in the positive ion mode are characterized by abundant [M + Na]+, [M + Na + matrix]+ and [M + 2Na - H]+ species. In negative FAB conditions the molecules yield [M - H]-.

Of the patients with gastric ulcers, 67 (38.

Recent research trends have been oriented towards the establishment of new 'in vitro' techniques that will avoid animal experimentation. In this paper, some results on the rate of diffusion of different anionic surfactants through both cellulose acetate and collagen membranes are described.

The present investigation was centred in the zone of transparent get belonging to a previously studied ternary system containing a broad variety of different structural compositions. The possibility of including an active sunscreen as well as the ability to increase the water content of the gel was studied.

Our previous studies have shown that 1) granulomatous hypersensitivity can be studied by examining the cellular reactivity manifested as multiple cell layers surrounding antigen-conjugated polyacrylamide beads; and 2) this reactivity is a CD4 T cell dependent, macrophage dependent, B cell independent response which is antigenically specific for parasite egg antigens.

Immunoaffinity-purified antibodies against soluble Schistosoma mansoni egg antigens (SEA) were isolated from the sera of patients with schistosomiasis mansoni. Similarly, antibodies against Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigote antigens were obtained from sera of patients with Chagas' disease. These antibody preparations were used in culture to demonstrate the presence of anti-idiotypic T lymphocytes in peripheral blood mononuclear cell preparations from patients with either schistosomiasis mansoni or Chagas' disease, or with both of these infections.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe previously have shown that former patients and patients with active cases of schistosomiasis mansoni have T lymphocytes in their PBMC that proliferate when exposed to immunoaffinity-purified antibodies against Schistosoma mansoni soluble egg antigens (SEA). These T cell anti-idiotypic responses required the participation of adherent cells, but the role of these cells in the response to the Id has been unclear. We now show that chloroquine does not interfere with Id-elicited stimulation of cells from former patients but completely inhibits their response to the SEA.

In an attempt to relate the structural state of the microemulsions to cystine reactivity, an appropriate model system showing a large microemulsion domain with diverse structures was chosen. The realm of preferentially hydrocarbon-continuous microemulsion-type media was found to induce the highest activity.

The haematuria was caused by vesical tumours in 13 patients, radiation cystitis in one and transurethral resection in one. Immediate side effects were few and none were noted in the long term, as judged by randomised biopsies from vesical mucosa.

Our data show that 1) granulomatous hypersensitivity can be studied by examining the cellular reactivity manifested as multiple cell layers surrounding the antigen conjugated beads; 2) this reactivity is a CD4 cell dependent, macrophage dependent, B cell independent response and 3) the in vitro granuloma response is antigenically specific for parasite egg antigens. Studies designed to investigate the immune regulation of granulomatous hypersensitivity using purified populations of either CD4 or CD8 T cells have demonstrated the complexity of cellular interactions in the suppression of granulomatous hypersensitivity.

Anti-idiotypic (anti-Id) T cells from schistosomiasis patients or former patients proliferate upon exposure to polyclonal or monoclonal anti-soluble egg antigen (SEA) antibodies. Chloroquine does not inhibit, the response, which is induced by F(ab')2 (but not soluble Fab) fragments of these antibodies. Purified T cells from former patients require macrophages or exogenous IL-1 to respond to anti-SEA Ids and can respond to matrix-bound Fab fragments in the presence of IL-1.
