Effect of time on biomechanics during exercise on the functional re-adaptive exercise device.

Mechanistic studies of the Functional Re-adaptive Exercise Device (FRED) have shown it automatically recruits Lumbar Multifidus (LM) and Transversus Abdominis (TrA) - two deep-spinal muscles that are atrophied and show altered motor control in low back pain (LBP). No studies have investigated the time required to familiarise to FRED exercise, which is required to inform future FRED based clinical trial protocols. This study therefore determined the effect of time, during FRED exercise, on biomechanical outcome measures, to establish the familiarisation period, and assess for loss of technique throughout a ten minute trial.

Positive airway pressure in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by snoring, recurrent obstruction (apneas) of the upper airway which disrupts normal ventilation during sleep. In the last decade, there has been a increase in children diagnosed with persistent, severe OSA attributed to (1) the obesity epidemic as 25-60% of obese children will have obesity related OSA (2) advances in medical technology that have increased life expectancy of medically complex children (3) improved diagnostics and (4) increased awareness. Positive airway pressure (PAP) is commonly used to treat persistent, severe OSA.

: Well-structured instructions for authors in journals help researchers in reporting unbiased results, which subsequently facilitates the review process. There have been reports of systematic evaluations of instructions for authors from journals in various medical specialties. However, precise information on the nature and extent of these instructions for authors in addiction science is lacking.

Depressive symptoms, sleep patterns, and physical activity in adolescents with narcolepsy.

Study Objectives: To evaluate the association between depressive symptoms, sleep patterns (duration and quality), excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and physical activity (PA) in adolescents with narcolepsy.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included adolescents (ages 10-18 years) with narcolepsy attending a tertiary care facility (The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada). Adolescents with narcolepsy completed questionnaires evaluating depressive symptoms (Children's Depression Inventory-2nd edition [CDI-2]), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), EDS (Epworth Sleepiness Scale), and PA (Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire).

Background: Most people who inject drugs (PWID) start their drug use careers by using non-injecting opioid drugs. A variety of interconnected factors may influence the risk of transition from non-injecting to injecting drug use (IDU). However, such factors have not been studied well in India.

Brain neurochemistry in unmedicated obsessive-compulsive disorder patients and effects of 12-week escitalopram treatment: H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine treatment-related neurochemical changes in 28 unmedicated obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients using H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( H-MRS).

Methods: We included subjects diagnosed with OCD (n = 28), each with a total duration of illness of less than 5 years, as a study group and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 26). The inclusion criteria for the OCD group were right-handed individuals aged 18 years or older who had not been on any specific treatment for OCD for the last at least 8 weeks and who had no other psychiatric comorbidity.

Purpose: Females remain under-represented in academic anesthesiology. Our objectives were to investigate gender differences over time in the first and last authors of published articles as well as corresponding citation rates in the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (CJA).

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective analysis of first and last authors' gender from editorials and original articles published in the CJA in a sample of one calendar year of each decade between 1954 to 2017.

Internalized stigma and its correlates among treatment seeking opium users in India: A cross-sectional observational study.

Opium has been used in India since ancient times for social, recreational, religious and medicinal purposes. Opium users seem to constitute a distinct sub-population among opioid users, who have minimal complications, better functioning and socio-cultural acceptance. Prominent levels of stigma have been reported against people who use opioid drugs, but the same cannot be extrapolated to opium users.

[Cu]CuCl PET imaging reveals activity of Dextran-Catechin on tumor copper homeostasis.

Given the strong clinical evidence that copper levels are significantly elevated in a wide spectrum of tumors, copper homeostasis is considered as an emerging target for anticancer drug design. Monitoring copper levels is therefore of paramount importance when assessing the efficacy of copper-targeting drugs. Herein, we investigated the activity of the copper-targeting compound Dextran-Catechin by developing a [Cu]CuCl PET imaging protocol to monitor its effect on copper homeostasis in tumors.

Health-related quality of life in pre-adolescent liver transplant recipients with biliary atresia: A cross-sectional study.

Objective: Pediatric recipients of liver transplantation (LT) often report lower Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) than healthy controls when assessed on generic HRQOL measurement tools. The recent addition of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Quality of Life (PeLTQL), a novel disease-specific HRQOL instrument for pediatric LT recipients, into the clinical armamentarium of tools now routinely available to clinical care teams, provides the unique opportunity to identify disease-related challenges in children who have undergone this life-saving intervention. This study assesses HRQOL in pre-adolescent aged patients with a primary diagnosis of biliary atresia (BA) who underwent LT as an infant, using both generic and disease-specific HRQOL instruments validated for children.

Open-field PET: Simultaneous brain functional imaging and behavioural response measurements in freely moving small animals.

A comprehensive understanding of how the brain responds to a changing environment requires techniques capable of recording functional outputs at the whole-brain level in response to external stimuli. Positron emission tomography (PET) is an exquisitely sensitive technique for imaging brain function but the need for anaesthesia to avoid motion artefacts precludes concurrent behavioural response studies. Here, we report a technique that combines motion-compensated PET with a robotically-controlled animal enclosure to enable simultaneous brain imaging and behavioural recordings in unrestrained small animals.

Cysteines and Disulfide-Bridged Macrocyclic Mimics of Teixobactin Analogues and Their Antibacterial Activity Evaluation against Methicillin-Resistant (MRSA).

Teixobactin is a highly potent cyclic depsipeptide which kills a broad range of multi-drug resistant, Gram-positive bacteria, such as Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) without detectable resistance. In this work, we describe the design and rapid synthesis of novel teixobactin analogues containing two cysteine moieties, and the corresponding disulfide-bridged cyclic analogues. These analogues differ from previously reported analogues, such as an Arg-teixobactin, in terms of their macrocyclic ring size, and feature a disulfide bridge instead of an ester linkage.

The slow down of dynamics in glass forming liquids as the glass transition is approached has been characterised through the Adam-Gibbs relation, which relates relaxation time scales to the configurational entropy. The Adam-Gibbs relation cannot apply simultaneously to all relaxation times scales unless they are coupled, and exhibit closely related temperature dependences. The breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation presents an interesting situation to the contrary, and in analysing it, it has recently been shown that the Adam-Gibbs relation applies to diffusion coefficients rather than to viscosity or structural relaxation times related to the decay of density fluctuations.

Collagen-mimetic peptides have been utilized to form structures of different morphology for various biomedical and nanotechnology applications. This chapter describes the characterization of collagen-mimetic peptide self-assembled structures formed by tuning the interactions between peptides. Inclusion of varying hydrophobicity, electrostatic forces, and stereoselectivity was mainly employed in CMP designs discussed herein.

Background: Gastric ischemic conditioning prior to esophagectomy can increase neovascularization of the new conduit. Prior studies of ischemic conditioning have only investigated reductions in anastomotic leaks. Our aim was to analyze the association between gastric conditioning and all anastomotic outcomes as well as overall morbidity in our cohort of esophagectomy patients.
