Background: To improve transmural palliative care for older adults acutely admitted to hospital, the PalliSupport intervention, comprising an educational programme and transmural palliative care pathway, was developed. This care pathway involves timely identification of palliative care needs, advance care planning, multidisciplinary team meetings, warm handover, and follow-up home visits. With this study, we evaluate changes in patient-related outcomes and transmural collaboration after implementation of the care pathway.

Implementation of this care pathway was challenging. The aim of this study was to improve understanding why the implementation partly failed.

This study describes presenting symptoms, demographic and clinical characteristics of a large cohort of patients from ethnic minority populations at their first visit to a geriatric day clinic and compares them with those of native majority (Dutch) patients.
Method: Retrospective case control study in an urban geriatric day clinic setting.
Importance: Reliable prevalence estimates are lacking for young-onset dementia (YOD), in which symptoms of dementia start before the age of 65 years. Such estimates are needed for policy makers to organize appropriate health care.
Objective: To determine the global prevalence of YOD.
Background: The need for health care professionals with geriatric knowledge is expected to increase due to aging of society. Educational tools that fit the specific learning styles of nurses and nursing students might be useful for this. Serioussoap.

For various reasons, the incidence of dementia in this group is expected to increase.

Design: Post hoc analysis of data from prospective cohort study, 2006 to 2009, 12-month follow-up.
Setting: Eleven medical wards in three hospitals in the Netherlands.
Importance: Older adults acutely hospitalized are at risk of disability. Trials on comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and transitional care present inconsistent results.
Objective: To test whether an intervention of systematic CGA, followed by the transitional care bridge program, improved activities of daily living (ADLs) compared with systematic CGA alone.
Objective: In the Netherlands, persons of Turkish, Moroccan and Surinamese descent form the largest groups of non-western immigrants. A high prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia has been described in immigrant populations in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. We determined the prevalence of MCI and dementia in older community-dwelling adults from the largest non-western immigrant groups in the Netherlands.

Methods: Prospective cohort study conducted between 2006 and 2008 in three teaching hospitals in the Netherlands. 639 patients aged 65 years and older, hospitalized for >48 h were included. Two physicians scored diseases, using ICD-9 codes.
Background: To assess the association between demographics, comorbidity, geriatric conditions, and three health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes one year after acute hospitalisation in older patients.
Methods: A prospective cohort study conducted between 2006 and 2009 with one-year follow-up in 11 medical wards at two university hospitals and one teaching hospital in the Netherlands. Participants were 473 patients of 65 years and older, acutely hospitalised for more than 48 hours.
To study Schmallenberg virus (SBV) excretion in bovine semen after experimental infection, two bulls were inoculated subcutaneously with a SBV isolate (1 ml Vero cell culture 106 TCID50). After inoculation (at day 0), semen was collected daily from both animals for 21 days and samples were tested for SBV by qRT-PCR assay. At 24 days post-inoculation both animals were subjected to necropsy and the genital organs and lymph nodes draining these organs were also tested for SBV RNA (qRT-PCR).

A systematic review was performed to assess the quality of the cross-cultural adaptations and the psychometric properties of health assessment scales measuring cognition, mood, activities of daily living, health-related quality of life, and loneliness. We focused on the scales that were adapted for use with Turkish, Arab, and Surinamese (Creole and Hindi) individuals aged 65 years and older.

For each extender, a 30- and a 60-min cooldown period was used prior to the addition of the extender containing glycerol and then immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen vapours. Sperm motility was measured using a computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) system.

Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether geriatric syndromes were associated with ADEs in acutely admitted elderly patients.
Background: Elderly dialysis patients are prone to disabilities and functional decline. This aggravates their last period of life. It would be valuable to be able to preserve daily function and quality of life.

In the next decade the number of non-western elderly immigrants will double in the Netherlands. Because of specific risk factors (hypertension, diabetes), the number of elderly immigrants with dementia will probably increase. Memory clinics are not well prepared for these patients, because health professionals lack knowledge about important obstacles in intercultural dementia diagnostics.

Frozen-thawed ejaculated sperm from age-matched plains (n = 3) and wood (n = 2) bison were evaluated for morphometry, motility, viability, protein profile, and in vitro fertilization characteristics. Sperm morphometry and motility were assessed with computer-based systems, viability was assessed with SYBR-14 and propidium iodide, and fertilizing ability was determined using a heterologous in vitro fertilization system (using bovine oocytes).

The mortality rate in these patients is approximately 20%, whereas 30% of the survivors decline in their level of activities of daily living (ADL) functioning three months after hospital discharge. Most diseases and geriatric conditions that contribute to poor outcomes could be subject to pro-active intervention; not only during hospitalization, but also after discharge.

Mares (n = 14) were randomly assigned to one of the following groups: (i) control (n = 4) were either not treated (n = 2) or received (n = 2) lactated Ringer's intrauterine for 1 or 3 days; (ii) treated mares (n = 10) received intrauterine cefquinome for 1 or 3 days. After at least 10 days had passed following the last treatment and ovulation, mares were given Prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) and were randomly assigned to an alternate treatment.

On dairy farms covered by the ambulatory service of the Department of Farm Animal Health, 55 Holstein-Friesian cows with suspected ovarian follicular cysts on the basis of rectal palpation underwent confirmatory transrectal ultrasonography. An ovarian follicular cyst was confirmed in 28 cows (50.9%) and was treated by single transvaginal-guided needle aspiration.
