Background: Over 1800 food contact chemicals (FCCs) are known to migrate from food contact articles used to store, process, package, and serve foodstuffs. Many of these FCCs have hazard properties of concern, and still others have never been tested for toxicity. Humans are known to be exposed to FCCs via foods, but the full extent of human exposure to all FCCs is unknown.

Different blood group systems have been characterized in people and other mammals. In domestic cats, the blood group system plays the most important clinical role and has been investigated extensively-from the phenotype to the molecular genetics. In non-domestic felids, phenotypic blood typing has been performed by different methods to detect the antigens, but the four informative markers in domestic cats were not able to identify types and () in non-domestic cats.

  • PFASs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are associated with serious health and environmental issues, particularly because they're found in food packaging, leading to human exposure.
  • A systematic review identified 68 types of PFASs in food contact materials like paper and plastic, with most being long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids and fluorotelomer-based compounds.
  • Only 57% of the detected PFASs have toxicity data available, but many tested have shown adverse health effects, indicating the need for international regulations to limit their use in food packaging.

Based upon previous clinical experience with domestic cats (), the ability to assess blood types and blood (in-)compatibilities of nondomestic felids, and adequately consider and plan for blood transfusions, may be important. Although nondomestic felids appear to have an blood group system similar to domestic cats, typing with point-of-care kits and by genotyping for domestic cats have not been reported. In this study, 162 blood samples from 18 different nondomestic felid species (cheetah [, = 42], lion [, = 33], tiger [, = 23], Canada lynx [, = 11], snow leopard [, = 10], puma [, = 7], clouded leopard [, = 6], serval [, = 5], jaguar [, = 5], fishing cat [, = 4], Pallas cat [, = 3], bobcat [, = 3], ocelot [, = 3], black footed cat [, = 2], leopard [, = 2], African wildcat [, = 1], caracal [, = 1], and sand cat [, = 1]) were blood typed by laboratory and point-of-care tests, genotyped for four known variants for type and type () phenotypes, and crossmatched with one another and domestic type cats.

Anesthesia is frequently required to provide appropriate medical care to captive great apes. Anesthetic safety can be optimized through placement of an arterial catheter, which allows direct measurement of arterial blood pressure and easy sampling of arterial blood for blood-gas analysis. Arterial catheterization in great apes can be achieved through palpation-guided or ultrasound-guided placement with or without a modified Seldinger technique.

Fluid Therapy in Exotic Animal Emergency and Critical Care.

Vet Clin North Am Exot Anim Pract

September 2023

Many new concepts are emerging in the understanding of fluid therapy in human and mammalian medicine, including the role of the glycocalyx, increased understanding of fluid, sodium, and chloride overload, and the advantages of colloid administration in the form of albumin. None of these concepts, however, appear to be directly applicable to non-mammalian exotic patients, and careful consideration of their alternate physiology is required when formulating fluid plans for these patients.

A spatial modelling approach was used to explore how a proximity limit (150 m, 300 m, and 450 m) between tobacco retailers may impact different neighbourhoods in New Zealand. Neighbourhoods were categorised into three density groups (0, 1-2, 3+ retailers). As the proximity limit increases, there is a progressive redistribution of neighbourhoods in the three density groups with, the 3+ density group incorporating fewer neighbourhoods and the 0 and 1-2 density groups conversely each consisting of more.

Article Synopsis
  • Neuroblastoma originates from sympathetic neuroblast precursors that do not properly differentiate, leading to uncontrolled growth, with ASCL1 as a key regulator in this process.
  • * ASCL1 plays a dual role in promoting proliferation and controlling differentiation in neuroblastoma cells, particularly in cases with MYCN amplification.
  • * Deletion of ASCL1 leads to slower cell growth, decreased expression of differentiation-related genes, and impaired chromatin binding of other regulatory proteins, highlighting its critical role in maintaining a highly proliferative state in neuroblastoma.

The EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) aims at removing the most harmful chemicals from consumer products, including from food contact materials (FCMs). If implemented as intended, the CSS has the potential to significantly improve the protection of public health by banning the use of chemicals of concern that are carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction (CMRs), or persistent and bioaccumulative, or endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in FCMs. However, until now an overview of such food contact chemicals of concern (FCCoCs) has not been available, because the CSS is fairly recent.
