Background: Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes impair cellular regeneration in multiple tissues including skeletal muscle. The molecular basis for this impairment is largely unknown. Glucose uptake via glucose transporter GLUT4 is impaired in insulin resistance.

Automated systems targeting these tasks are scarce, leading to manual and inefficient workflows. Methods We created an electronic health record (EHR)-based, user-specific dashboard for surgical residents to compile resident-specific data: bedside procedures performed, operative cases performed or participated in, and notes written by the resident as a surrogate for patients cared for.

We aimed to improve the accuracy of administrative data for perforated appendicitis classification relying on ICD-10-CM codes from 2015 to 2018.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of randomly sampled patients aged ≤18 years diagnosed with acute appendicitis from eight children's hospitals.
In healthy skin, vectorial ion transport gives rise to a transepithelial potential which directly impacts many physiological aspects of skin function. A wound is a physical defect that breaches the epithelial barrier and changes the electrochemical environment of skin. Electroceutical dressings are devices that manipulate the electrochemical environment, host as well as microbial, of a wound.

The primary objective of this study was to determine if GLUT1 is necessary for basal or overload-stimulated muscle glucose uptake. Muscle-specific GLUT1 knockout (mGLUT1KO) mice were generated and examined for changes in body weight, body composition, metabolism, systemic glucose regulation, muscle glucose transporters, and muscle [H]-2-deoxyglucose uptake ± the GLUT1 inhibitor BAY-876.

Enzyme catalyzed reactions can be started, stopped, and throttled by regulating ion concentration in solution. The flow of charge through solution is related to the flow of electrons through an electric circuit using electrochemistry. However, current electrochemical methods to vary ionic concentration are largely limited to the electrode surface, making it impractical to exploit ionic concentration as a control variable in traditional enzyme assays.

Carbon-based nanoparticles (CNPs) derived from natural sources have previously been shown to have toxic effects on mosquito larvae and offer a potential alternative to chemical insecticides such as pyrethroids, for which mosquitoes have evolved resistance. However, CNPs derived from industrial sources, such as carbon black, have not previously been evaluated as larvicides.

Patients commonly require tracheostomy for ventilator liberation. Though bedside percutaneous tracheostomy is commonly performed, it has the potential for increased complications, both surgical and with the ECMO circuit.

The Shade Tree Clinic (STC) is an SRFC serving 300 patients with complex medical conditions. This study describes the implementation and efficacy of a General Surgery Specialty Clinic in this setting.

In this retrospective cohort analysis, we sought to characterize musculoskeletal firearm injuries in children and to describe the financial burden associated with these injuries.
Methods: This study is a single center, retrospective review.
Aerobic exercise training and resistance exercise training are both well-known for their ability to improve human health; especially in individuals with type 2 diabetes. However, there are critical differences between these two main forms of exercise training and the adaptations that they induce in the body that may account for their beneficial effects. This article reviews the literature and highlights key gaps in our current understanding of the effects of aerobic and resistance exercise training on the regulation of systemic glucose homeostasis, skeletal muscle glucose transport and skeletal muscle glucose metabolism.

This study aimed to evaluate utilization trends and efficacy of laparoscopy in the management of pediatric abdominal trauma.
Study Design: To gain both study granularity and power, our institutional trauma registry (2005-2017) and the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB; 2010-2015) identified patients ≤18 years who required celiotomy for abdominal trauma.
Objective: We present a systematic, sustainable, student-led model for supporting the Surgical Clerkship experience.
Design: Our model includes student-led suturing and knot-tying classes, operating room tours, skills sessions, and shelf review sessions provided systematically for each of 5 Surgical Clerkship blocks in the 2017 to 2018 academic year.
Setting: Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Background: Preoperative opioid use is widespread and associated with worse patient-reported outcomes following spine surgery.
Objective: To calculate a threshold preoperative morphine equianalgesic (MEA) dose beyond which patients are less likely to achieve the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) following elective surgery for degenerative spine disease.
Methods: The study included 543 cervical and 1293 lumbar patients.
Most women within their lifetime will experience pregnancy, birth and motherhood. Despite this almost universal experience, the process is far from uniform. Throughout the childbirth continuum, expectations and experiences of women are diverse and ever-changing (van Teijlingen et al 2017).

Although studies of post-mortem brain tissue provide clues of etiology, the physiological function of Hirano bodies remains unknown. A cell culture model was utilized to study the interactions of mutant tau proteins, model Hirano bodies, and GSK3β in human astrocytoma cells.
