Background: Reported results of clinical trials assessing higher-dose anticoagulation in patients hospitalized for COVID-19 have been inconsistent.
Purpose: To estimate the association of higher- versus lower-dose anticoagulation with clinical outcomes.
Data Sources: Randomized trials were identified from the World Health Organization's International Clinical Trials Registry Platform and ClinicalTrials.
Background: Postoperative knee arthrofibrosis after arthroscopic ligament reconstruction is a serious complication. Among adolescents, risk factors for postoperative arthrofibrosis are not well characterized and the effectiveness of early manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) is not well established.
Purposes: To identify risk factors for arthrofibrosis after arthroscopic knee ligament reconstruction in adolescent patients and to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of early MUA.
Reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels has been shown to reduce the risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Statins are the foundation of LDL-C lowering therapy with other non-statin agents used in circumstances where goal LDL-C levels are not reached or owing to intolerance to adverse effects of statins. In 2003, the discovery of the role of the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) system in promoting elevated LDL-C levels led to new avenues of drug development to achieve target LDL-C.

Though the tragedy can never be undone, organ donation can save lives and create a legacy for the donor and their loved ones.

Unfortunately, the absence of anatomical markers on the ascending aorta presents challenges in capturing deformation. Utilizing our established intra-operative biaxial strain measurement method, we delineated local biaxial deformation characteristics in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass graft surgery recipients (n = 20), and Aortic Repair surgery patients (n = 47).

It has been powered by a decades-long commitment to federal investment in fundamental research that, in turn, nurtured both domestic and foreign talent and prompted the translation of breakthroughs to fuel the economy, improve health, fortify national security, and inspire awe. The world has benefited from the proliferation of this model, and partnerships between the US and other countries have resulted in game-changing discoveries, from medicines to machine learning.

However, the prespecified subgroup of subjects with disease-causing nuclear DNA (nDNA) pathogenic variants receiving elamipretide experienced an improvement in the six-minute walk test (6MWT), while the cohort of subjects with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) pathogenic variants showed no difference versus placebo. These published findings prompted additional genotype-specific post hoc analyses of the MMPOWER-3 trial.

Standard revascularization relies on autologous vein or synthetic grafts, but alternative options are needed when adequate vein is not feasible and when clinical conditions preclude safe use of synthetic materials.
Objective: To evaluate the performance of the acellular tissue engineered vessel (ATEV) in the repair of arterial injuries.
The vascular endothelial barrier maintains intravascular volume and metabolic homeostasis. Although plasma fluids and proteins extravasate continuously from tissue microvasculature (capillaries, post-capillary venules), systemic vascular leakage increases in critical illness associated with sepsis, burns and trauma, among others, or in association with certain drugs or toxin exposures. Systemically dysregulated fluid homeostasis, which can lead to hypovolaemia, hypotensive shock and widespread tissue oedema, has been termed systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) when overt secondary causes (for example, heart or liver failure) are excluded.

Aims: Tissue V12Gy (total brain volume receiving 12Gy including target) can predict for late toxicity in single target benign disease treated with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The value of this metric remains uncertain for multiple brain metastases. This retrospective cohort study reports the outcomes and evaluates the predictors of toxicity in patients with four or more brain metastases treated with single-fraction SRS.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) aims to downstage tumors to achieve operability, but the optimal regimen remains controversial due to varying efficacy and toxicity profiles. This study compares the efficacy and toxicity of a three-drug regimen (TPF: docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil) with a two-drug regimen (taxane and platinum) in patients with borderline resectable HNSCC in an LMIC setting.

In scenarios where second-line tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are unavailable or unaffordable, dose escalation of imatinib provides an alternative. This study evaluates the efficacy, safety, and progression-free survival (PFS) outcomes of dose escalation of imatinib in CML patients who experienced suboptimal response or progression on standard doses.

The urachus, an embryonic organ associated with the bladder, typically undergoes degeneration shortly after birth. Inadequate closure of the urachus can result in urachal malformations, with the most common being a urachal cyst. Failure to promptly identify and address this condition can lead to complications such as sepsis, fistula development, and cyst rupture, mimicking symptoms of peritonitis.

Antibody responses to mosquito salivary proteins like SG6 have been used as biomarkers of exposure to Anopheles mosquito bites. Here, we investigate four mosquito salivary proteins as potential biomarkers of human exposure to mosquitoes infected with P.

We compared outcomes prospectively through 2-years after biologic assignment to a Donor or No Donor (SOC) Arm based on the availability of an HLA-matched sibling or unrelated donor (BMTCTN 1503; NCT02766465). A donor search was commenced after eligibility confirmation.

Here we introduce the Cytophone, an innovative photoacoustic flow cytometer platform with high-pulse-rate lasers and a focused ultrasound transducer array to noninvasively detect and identify malaria-infected red blood cells (iRBCs) using specific wave shapes, widths, and time delays generated from the absorbance of laser energy by hemozoin, a universal biomarker of malaria infection. In a population of Cameroonian adults with uncomplicated malaria, we assess our device for safety in a cross-sectional cohort (n = 10) and conduct a performance assessment in a longitudinal cohort (n = 20) followed for 30 ± 7 days after clearance of parasitemia.

The incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury continues to increase in the skeletally immature population. These injuries were historically treated with nonsurgical measures in this age group due to concerns for iatrogenic damage to the physis during ACL reconstruction. However, delayed surgery often led to recurrent instability, meniscal tears, and chondral damage.
