Medical facilities are civilian objects specially protected by international humanitarian law. Despite the need for systematic documentation of the effects of war on medical facilities for judiciary accountability, current methods for surveilling damage to protected civilian objects during ongoing armed conflict are insufficient. Satellite imagery damage assessment confers significant possibilities for investigating patterns of war.

A pilot program to improve TB care with primary and specialty care coordination in TB public health clinic.

Background: The Wetmore Tuberculosis (TB) Clinic in New Orleans serves patients who often lack primary care (PC) or specialty care (SC), which is complicated by comorbidities. An initiative to provide on-site PC and coordinate care aims to enhance TB patient management.

Methods: Data collection involved categorizing patients based on their PC status: Group I (regular PC), Group II (intermittent PC), and Group III (no PC), with on-site Nurse Practitioner-based Bridge Care (NPBC) provided as needed.

Morphological Species Delimitation in The Western Pond Turtle (): Can Machine Learning Methods Aid in Cryptic Species Identification?

As the discovery of cryptic species has increased in frequency, there has been an interest in whether geometric morphometric data can detect fine-scale patterns of variation that can be used to morphologically diagnose such species. We used a combination of geometric morphometric data and an ensemble of five supervised machine learning methods (MLMs) to investigate whether plastron shape can differentiate two putative cryptic turtle species, and has been the focus of considerable research due to its biogeographic distribution and conservation status. Despite this work, reliable morphological diagnoses for its two species are still lacking.

Design and Impact of a Novel Rural Hospital Alliance.

Without rural hospitals, many patients may not have access to essential services, or even any health care. Rural hospitals provide a community hub for local access to primary care and emergency services, as well as a bridge to specialized care outside the community. The goal of this review was to demonstrate how the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences supports and empowers rural hospitals through an alliance that provides cost savings through clinical networks, collaborative purchasing, and leveraged services; workforce recruitment and education; telemedicine and distance learning; community outreach; and access to best practices, resources, and tools for hospital transformation.

Introduction: Personnel engaged in high-stakes occupations, such as military personnel, law enforcement, and emergency first responders, must sustain performance through a range of environmental stressors. To maximize the effectiveness of military personnel, an a priori understanding of traits can help predict their physical and cognitive performance under stress and adversity. This work developed and assessed a suite of measures that have the potential to predict performance during operational scenarios.

Purpose Of Review: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States with incidence expected to increase in the coming decades. Recent years have produced a variety of new and novel therapeutics aimed at reducing the global burden of cardiovascular disease. This review highlights these recent advancements.

Cattle acclimate more substantially to repeated handling when confined individually in a pen than when assessed as a group.

Chute (CS) and exit (ES) scores are common subjective methods used to evaluate temperament in cattle production systems. A pen test, which allows behavior to be observed in a non-restrained setting, may also be an effective method to evaluate temperament by allowing more variation among animals to be expressed. The merit of pen scores in assisting producers in evaluating temperament is equivocal.

Characterization and chemical reactivity of room-temperature-stable Mn-alkylperoxo complexes.

While alkylperoxomanganese(iii) (Mn-OOR) intermediates are proposed in the catalytic cycles of several manganese-dependent enzymes, their characterization has proven to be a challenge due to their inherent thermal instability. Fundamental understanding of the structural and electronic properties of these important intermediates is limited to a series of complexes with thiolate-containing NS ligands. These well-characterized complexes are metastable yet unreactive in the direct oxidation of organic substrates.

Increased rates of blood culture contamination during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

We observed a higher rate of blood-culture contamination during the COVID-19 pandemic at our institution compared to a prepandemic period. Given the potential implications of blood contamination in antibiotic and diagnostic test utilization as well as added cost, it is imperative to continue efforts to minimize these episodes during the pandemic.

Sea turtle demand in China threatens the survival of wild populations.

Sea turtles are an important umbrella species in marine ecosystems. The populations of all five species of sea turtles in China have dropped sharply due to massive illegal trade and habitat loss. The fast-growing demand for sea turtle displays from Chinese aquariums and private individuals has led to a large-scale illegal trade domestically and internationally.

Epidemiology, Clinical Features, and Outcomes of Hospitalized Adults with COVID-19: Early Experience from an Academic Medical Center in Mississippi.

Objectives: To describe the demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of hospitalized adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in an academic medical center in the southern United States.

Methods: Retrospective, observational cohort study of all adult patients (18 years and older) consecutively admitted with laboratory-confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 infection between March 13 and April 25, 2020 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. All of the patients either survived to hospital discharge or died during hospitalization.

A Causality Perspective of Genomic Breed Composition for Composite Animals.

Genomic breed composition (GBC) of an individual animal refers to the partition of its genome according to the inheritance from its ancestors or ancestral breeds. For crossbred or composite animals, knowing their GBC is useful to estimate heterosis, to characterize their actual inheritance from foundation breeds, and to make management decisions for crossbreeding programs. Various statistical approaches have been proposed to estimate GBC in animals, but the interpretations of estimates have varied with these methods.

Building collaborative leadership: A qualitative evaluation of the Australian Collaborative Pairs trial.

The need to reorient the health system to ensure greater involvement of consumers in healthcare has, in recent years, been highlighted as a priority in both literature and policy. This change requires renegotiating power relations among health organisations, health professionals and health consumers. This study presents findings from a trial of a program designed to foster collaborative relationships between clinicians and consumers of health services in the Australian setting.

China has about 11% of the world's total wildlife species, so strengthening China's wildlife conservation is of great significance to global biodiversity. Despite some successful cases and conservation efforts, 21.4% of China's vertebrate species are threatened by human activities.

Treatment of Obesity in Mitigating Metabolic Risk.

Through diverse mechanisms, obesity contributes to worsened cardiometabolic health and increases rates of cardiovascular events. Effective treatment of obesity is necessary to reduce the associated burdens of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and death. Despite increasing cardiovascular outcome data on obesity interventions, only a small fraction of the population with obesity are optimally treated.

Estimation of genomic breed composition of individual animals in composite beef cattle.

Three statistical models (an admixture model, linear regression, and ridge-regression BLUP) and two strategies for selecting SNP panels (uniformly spaced vs. maximum Euclidean distance of SNP allele frequencies between ancestral breeds) were compared for estimating genomic-estimated breed composition (GBC) in Brangus and Santa Gertrudis cattle, respectively.
