Background: Meal variety promotes overconsumption by delaying sensory-specific-satiety (SSS), the transient reduction in reward value of a recently consumed food. Despite its role in meal cessation, the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying SSS are largely unknown.

Methods: Here, we developed a preclinical model of SSS wherein rats consume more of a different food compared to the same food presented again, leading to greater caloric intake.

Objective: Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases are characterized by progressive neuronal loss. Previous studies using human postmortem tissues have shown the impact of neurodegenerative disorders on adult neurogenesis. The extent to which adult neural stem cells are activated in the subventricular zone and whether therapeutic treatments such as deep brain stimulation promote adult neurogenesis remains unclear.

Predicting the abundance of Lepeophtheirus salmonis in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick.

Objective: The primary objective was to construct a time series model for the abundance of the adult female (AF) sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis in Atlantic Salmon Salmo salar farms in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, Canada, for the period 2016-2021 and to illustrate its short-term predictive capabilities.

Methods: Sea lice are routinely counted for monitoring purposes, and these data are recorded in the Fish-iTrends database. A multivariable autoregressive linear mixed-effects model (second-order autoregressive structure) was generated with the outcome of the abundance of AF sea lice and included treatments, infestation pressures (a measure that represents the dose of exposure of sea louse parasitic stages to potential fish hosts) within sites (internal) and among sites (external), and other predictors.

Here, we discover that a conserved stress signaling pathway, the integrated stress response (ISR), characterizes a microglia subset with neurodegenerative outcomes.

Absolute depth-resolved optic axis measurement with catheter-based polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography.

Imaging depth-resolved birefringence and optic axis orientation with polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) unveils details of tissue structure and organization that can be of high pathophysiologic, mechanistic, and diagnostic value. For catheter-based PS-OCT, the dynamic rotation of the fiber optic probe, in addition to the polarization effects of the system components, complicates the reliable and robust reconstruction of the sample's optic axis orientation. Addressing this issue, we present a new method for the reconstruction of absolute depth-resolved optic axis orientation in catheter-based PS-OCT by using the intrinsic retardance of the protecting catheter sheath as a stable guide star signal.

To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying these adaptations, we investigated the potential role of N6-methyladenosine (mA), a widespread mRNA modification, in during extreme dehydration.

Expert-based assessment of chemical and physical exposures, and organizational factors, in past agricultural jobs.

Background: Limited data document the spectrum of exposures in the agricultural environment. We describe here the wide range of chemical and physical agents, and organizational factors, encountered in agricultural jobs held in the past in Canada and abroad.

Methods: We used data from a population-based case-control study of prostate cancer including 3,925 male participants residing in Montreal, Canada in 2005-2012.

Socioeconomic status, smoking, and lung cancer: mediation and bias analysis in the SYNERGY study.

Background: Increased lung-cancer risks for low socioeconomic status (SES) groups are only partially attributable to smoking habits. Little effort has been made to investigate the persistent risks related to low SES by quantification of potential biases.

Methods: Based on 12 case-control studies, including 18 centers of the international SYNERGY project (16,550 cases, 20,147 controls), we estimated controlled direct effects (CDE) of SES on lung cancer via multiple logistic regression, adjusted for age, study center, and smoking habits, and stratified by sex.

Occupational exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and brain tumor risk: Application of the INTEROCC job-exposure matrix.

Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF, 100 kHz to 300 GHz) are classified by IARC as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). This study evaluates the potential association between occupational RF-EMF exposure and brain tumor risk, utilizing for the first time, a RF-EMF job-exposure matrix (RF-JEM) developed in the multi-country INTEROCC case-control study. Cumulative and time-weighted average (TWA) occupational RF-EMF exposures were estimated for study participants based on lifetime job histories linked to the RF-JEM using three different methods: (1) by considering RF-EMF intensity among all exposed jobs, (2) by considering RF-EMF intensity among jobs with an exposure prevalence ≥ the median exposure prevalence of all exposed jobs, and (3) by considering RF-EMF intensity of jobs of participants who reported RF-EMF source use.

Traumatic life events, everyday discrimination, and posttraumatic symptoms among sexual minority men.

Objective: Experiences of everyday discrimination are linked with mental health issues for sexual minority individuals, including posttraumatic symptoms (PTS), yet it is unclear whether experiences of discrimination are linked with PTS after accounting for the influence of traumatic life events. This study sought to increase understanding of the link between everyday discrimination and PTS, among sexual minority men.

Method: A sample of 290 gay men living in the United States completed an online survey including measures of traumatic life events, everyday discrimination, and PTS.

Cisgender Sexual Minority Women's Interest in Telemental Health Services: A Latent Class Analysis.

Telemental health is increasingly recognized for its potential to overcome barriers like cost and stigma, particularly for marginalized groups. Sexual minority women in particular may benefit from increased access to telemental health services, due to the unique health disparities faced by this population. However, very little research thus far has assessed the telemental health preferences of this group.

Don't ignore the middle: Distinct mnemonic functions of intermediate hippocampus.

The dorsal region of the hippocampus (dHC) mediates many of the mnemonic functions traditionally associated with the hippocampus proper, such as spatial and episodic memory, whereas ventral hippocampus (vHC) has been extensively implicated in emotional memory and motivational processes. By contrast, the functions of the intermediate hippocampus (iHC) are far less understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mnemonic functions of iHC by reversibly inactivating iHC prior to testing memory in behavioral tasks dependent on the integrity of dHC, iHC, or vHC, namely, rapid place water maze, inhibitory avoidance, spontaneous alternation, and temporal ordering of odors.

Background: The second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D) is thought to reflect prenatal exposure to sex steroids. We investigated the relationship between 2D:4D and odds of prostate cancer.

Method: Data were collected in PROtEuS, a population-based case-control study conducted in Montréal, Canada (2005-2012), including 1931 incident prostate cancer cases aged < 76 years and 1994 population controls.

Background: Shared medical appointments (SMAs) in heart failure (HF) are medical visits where several patients with HF meet with multidisciplinary providers at the same time for efficient and comprehensive care. It is unknown whether HF-SMAs can improve overall and cardiac health status for high-risk patients with HF discharged from acute care.

Methods And Results: A 3-site, open-label, randomized-controlled-trial was conducted.

Verbal Learning and Memory Deficits across Neurological and Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Insights from an ENIGMA Mega Analysis.

Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15-90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals.

Regression of cardiac angiosarcoma in a 17-year-old: a percutaneous biopsy effect.

Background: Cardiac angiosarcoma is a very rare and aggressive primary cardiac tumor associated with poor prognosis. Diagnosis is often delayed due to non-specific symptoms, with most cases involving metastases at the time of diagnosis. We describe a unique case of apparent tumor regression of cardiac angiosarcoma post percutaneous biopsy.

Background: Air pollution has been classified as a human carcinogen based largely on findings for respiratory cancers. Emerging, but limited, evidence suggests that it increases the risk of breast cancer, particularly among younger women. We characterized associations between residential exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen dioxide (NO) and breast cancer.

Wavelength-swept spontaneous Raman spectroscopy system improves fiber-based collection efficiency for whole brain tissue classification.

Significance: Raman spectroscopy is a valuable technique for tissue identification, but its conventional implementation is hindered by low efficiency due to scattering. Addressing this limitation, we are further developing the wavelength-swept Raman spectroscopy approach.

Aim: We aim to enhance Raman signal detection by employing a laser capable of sweeping over a wide wavelength range to sequentially excite tissue with different wavelengths, paired with a photodetector featuring a fixed narrow-bandpass filter for collecting the Raman signal at a specific wavelength.

This was patient focused study to establish the feasibility and reproducibility of exercise-cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (EX-CMR) acquired during continuous in-scanner exercise in asymptomatic patients with primary mitral regurgitation (MR).

Methods: This was a prospective, feasibility study.

Evaluation of microglia activation related markers following a clinical course of TBS: A non-human primate study.

While the applicability and popularity of theta burst stimulation (TBS) paradigms remain, current knowledge of their neurobiological effects is still limited, especially with respect to their impact on glial cells and neuroinflammatory processes. We used a multimodal imaging approach to assess the effects of a clinical course of TBS on markers for microglia activation and tissue injury as an indirect assessment of neuroinflammatory processes. Healthy non-human primates received continuous TBS (cTBS), intermittent TBS (iTBS), or sham stimulation over the motor cortex at 90% of resting motor threshold.

However, accurately quantifying cognitive impairment in SCD is challenging, mainly because existing assessment tools lack sensitivity.
