Angle-resolved transmission measurements through anisotropic two-dimensional plasmonic crystals.

We report on high-accuracy angle-resolved optical transmission measurements through anisotropic 2D plasmonic crystals made of gold films with large-area rectangular arrays of nanoscale square holes, deposited on GaAs substrates. The measurements reveal the dispersion relations of air-gold and gold-GaAs surface plasmon polaritons. The crystal anisotropy induces a separation between plasmonic modes propagating in different directions.

Guidelines for the detection and treatment of liver metastases of colorectal cancer.

The spread of the surgical treatment for hepatic metastases have been crucial in the improvement of treatment and survival of metastatic colorectal cancer. The early and accurate diagnosis of metastases and the assessment of their size are essential factors to reach the optimal results with this treatment strategy. The precise indication of the surgical technique with or without the previous administration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy is of significant importance for the choice of R0 surgery and the timing of intervention.

Gefitinib inhibition of drug resistance to doxorubicin by inactivating ABCG2 in thyroid cancer cell lines.

Objective: To investigate the regulation of the breast cancer resistance protein ABCG2/BRCP1 drug transporter by epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) kinase activity, and to determine whether gefitinib, an EGFR small molecule inhibitor, will modulate the effects of doxorubicin hydrochloride by inhibiting its extrusion from thyroid cancer cells.

Design: Extrusion assays using flow cytometry analysis were used to determine the ability of thyroid cancer cells to extrude the chemotherapy drug, doxorubicin, via the ABCG2 drug transporter in the presence or absence of gefitinib. Immunofluorescence was employed to determine the cellular expression of ABCG2.

[Incidence and mortality due to cancer in Navarre, 1998-2002. Trends in the last 30 years].

Between 1998-2002, 16,952 new cases of cancer were registered in Navarre. In men, the most frequently diagnosed cancers were in the following order: prostate, lung, colon and rectum, bladder and stomach, which accounted for 63.2%.

Unraveling multistate unfolding of pig kidney fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase using single tryptophan mutants.

Pig kidney fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase is a homotetrameric enzyme which does not contain tryptophan. In a previous report the guanidine hydrochloride-induced unfolding of the enzyme has been described as a multistate process [Reyes, A. M.

Massive intracardiac metastases secondary to squamous cell carcinoma located at the level of the penis.

Penile cancer is an uncommon malignancy in the Developed World. They are dispersed mainly via the lymphatic pathway. We present a single case of massive intracardiac metastases secondary to epidermoid carcinoma of the penis.

Waveguiding in nanoscale metallic apertures.

We study the optical properties of subwavelength metallic waveguides made of nanoscale apertures in a metal. We develop analytical expressions for the fundamental optical modes in apertures. The results are in excellent agreement with finite element calculations.

Surgical treatment of persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia (PHH) (insulinoma and nesidioblastosis).

Background: The persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia is characterized by clinical symptoms that occur when the blood glucose levels drop below the normal range. Two pathological situations cause this clinical problem: The presence of a tumor of the pancreas secreting excessive amounts of insulin, known as insulinoma, and congenital beta-cell hyperplasia in the pancreas in children and noninsulinoma pancreatogenic hypoglycemia syndrome in adults.

Patients And Methods: Clinical characteristic and surgical outcome of a group of 20 patients operated on for this hypoglycemic syndrome; 18 for insulinoma and two for nesidioblastosis in children was studied.

Increased frequency of micronuclei in peripheral blood lymphocytes of subjects infected with Helicobacter pylori.

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a close association between infection with Helicobacter pylori and the development of gastric carcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas in humans. The cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay was performed on peripheral blood lymphocytes of H. pylori-infected patients in order to investigate the possible induction of genotoxic damage.

Room-temperature electroluminescence in the mid-infrared (2-3 microm) from bulk chromium-doped ZnSe.

Electroluminescence associated with impact excitation or ionization of deep Cr(2+) impurity centers in bulk ZnSe is reported. A broad signal of mid-infrared luminescence between 2 and 3 microm is observed once the biased bulk ZnSe device runs into a nonlinear conduction regime. Optical powers in the nanowatt range have been measured at room temperature.

Serum interleukin-6 levels are elevated in women with minimal-mild endometriosis.

Background: There is a need for a reliable marker of endometriosis, especially in early stages of peritoneal disease during which imaging is not effective. The use of serum interleukin (IL)-6 as a marker is controversial. To readdress the matter, patients undergoing laparoscopy were prospectively evaluated for serum IL-6 levels.

[Pancreatic transplant].

Diabetes mellitus is a health concern of the first order, given the high level of associated morbidity and mortality. The objective, in order to slow down the advance of its complications before they become irreversible, is based on correct metabolic control. The high rate of morbidity associated with the surgery of the vascularized pancreas transplant and the high index of rejection have for three decades formed an obstacle to this being considered a valid alternative in the treatment of these patients.

[Liver transplantation].

Liver transplantation is an efficient therapeutic option for terminal hepatic diseases. The principal indications of liver transplantation are hepatic cirrhosis, hepatic tumours (mainly, hepatocellular carcinoma) and acute liver failure. Over the years, the absolute contraindications for a transplant have lessened.

[Analysis of the Spanish National Registry of Laparoscopic Pancreatic Surgery].

Introduction: The reported experience with laparoscopic pancreatic surgery remains limited to case reports or small series of patients. A recent European multicenter study has allowed the limits and results of this technique to be known. This article presents an analysis of the results of the Spanish National Registry of Laparoscopic Pancreatic Surgery.

EGFR regulates the side population in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Objective: To identify the presence of side population (SP) cells in established head and neck squamous carcinoma cell (HNSCC) lines and to determine the role of EGFR in the regulation of the side population of these cells.

Methods: SP cells were identified using flow cytometry analysis by the ability of these cells to extrude the Hoechst 33342 dye via the drug transporter BCRP1/ABCG2. Effect of EGFR on the side population was determined also by difference in Hoechst extrusion and by immunofluorescence.

[Hepatic and pancreatic laparoscopic surgery].

The development of laparoscopic surgery also includes the more complex procedures of abdominal surgery such as those that affect the liver and the pancreas. From diagnostic laparoscopy, accompanied by laparoscopic echography, to major hepatic or pancreatic resections, the laparoscopic approach has spread and today encompasses practically all of the surgical procedures in hepatopancreatic pathology. Without forgetting that the aim of minimally invasive surgery is not a better aesthetic result but the reduction of postoperative complications, it is undeniable that the laparoscopic approach has brought great benefits for the patient in every type of surgery except, for the time being, in the case of big resections such as left or right hepatectomy or resections of segments VII and VIII.

Effect of red grapes co-winemaking in polyphenols and color of wines.

The red grapes co-winemaking effect on phenolic fraction and wine color has been studied for the first time, where Monastrell was comacerated and cofermentated with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Changes in the relative abundance of anthocyanins were observed as well as hyperchromic shifts at 530 and 620 nm; these effects remain constant after aging. Co-winemaking also favored copigmentation, giving way to more stable anthocyanins and facilitating their polymerization.

Nonmelanoma skin cancer after liver transplantation. Study of risk factors.

Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is a frequent complication after liver transplantation, but the risk factors of posttransplant NMSC have not been well defined. In a prospectively followed series of 170 liver transplant recipients, we assessed the incidence of NMSC, compared it with the expected incidence in the general population, and investigated which risk factors were related to NMSC. After a median follow-up of 62 months, 27 patients developed 43 NMSC.

De Novo neoplasia after liver transplantation: an analysis of risk factors and influence on survival.

Immunosuppression increases the risk of posttransplant malignancy and it may increase posttransplant mortality. The finding of factors related to the development of posttransplant malignancy may serve as a guide to avoid those risk factors and to develop strategies of posttransplant surveillance. The incidence and risk factors of malignancy were studied in 187 consecutive liver transplant recipients surviving more than 3 months.

Resonant transmission through a metallic film due to coupled modes.

Enhanced transmission and absorption by a silver film with a periodic array of slits has been studied numerically. We find that transmission and absorption peaks coincide and can be attributed to resonances of the structure. We show that these modes can be viewed as a coupling between cavity modes and surface plasmon polaritons.

Parathyroid hormone-related protein expression is correlated with clinical course in patients with glial tumors.

Background: Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) expression modulates cell survival in a number of human solid tumors. Although PTHrP is expressed in normal developing and neoplastic central nervous system tissue, clinical data indicating the importance of this protein with respect to local control and/or survival in patients with glial tumors are scarce.

Methods: Using a standard immunoperoxidase technique, the authors examined PTHrP expression in a population of 51 patients with Daumas-Duport Grade II-IV astrocytomas over a 15-year period.
