The Effects of Benralizumab on Lung Volumes and Airway Resistance in Severe Eosinophilic Asthma: A Real-World Study.

Introduction: Add-on biological monoclonal antibodies such as benralizumab (anti-IL-5Ra) are recommended by international guidelines to reduce exacerbations in severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA). However, few studies have assessed the impact of these therapies on lung function-related outcomes. Our goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of benralizumab on lung function, including lung volumes and airway resistance, in SEA patients in Portugal.

Skin cancer prevention in extreme sports: Intervention in a 24-h race.

Introduction: Excessive sun exposure and sunburns are the main preventable causes of skin cancer. The growing popularity of outdoor sports in developed countries has motivated the objective of this work to study the risk of photoexposure and the skin cancer prevention needs of athletes in an extreme race and evaluate an intervention targeted at this population.

Methods: An observational study was conducted during the XXIII edition of the 101 km de Ronda race, which consisted of trail running and mountain biking categories.

Subspecialty training in Europe: a report by the European Network of Young Gynaecological Oncologists.

Background: ESGO (European Society of Gynaecological Oncology) and partners are continually improving the developmental opportunities for gynaecological oncology fellows. The objectives of this survey were to evaluate the progress in the infrastructure of the training systems in Europe over the past decade. We also evaluated training and assessment techniques, the perceived relevance of ENYGO (European Network of Young Gynaecological Oncologists) initiatives, and unmet needs of trainees.

The Portuguese Severe Asthma Registry: Development, Features, and Data Sharing Policies.

The Portuguese Severe Asthma Registry ( RAG) was developed by an open collaborative network of asthma specialists. RAG collects data from adults and pediatric severe asthma patients that despite treatment optimization and adequate management of comorbidities require step 4/5 treatment according to GINA recommendations. In this paper, we describe the development and implementation of RAG, its features, and data sharing policies.

Omalizumab for Severe Asthma: Beyond Allergic Asthma.

Different subsets of asthma patients may be recognized according to the exposure trigger and the frequency and severity of clinical signs and symptoms. Regarding the exposure trigger, generally asthma can be classified as allergic (or atopic) and nonallergic (or nonatopic). Allergic and nonallergic asthma are distinguished by the presence or absence of clinical allergic reaction and in vitro IgE response to specific aeroallergens.

Ectopic pregnancy in an undescended fallopian tube: a diagnostic challenge.

Uterine malformations are the most frequent anomalies of the Müllerian ducts, but undescended ovaries and fallopian tubes are very rare congenital defects. Pregnancy in these misplaced organs may occur, frequently posing a diagnostic challenge. A case of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy in an undescended fallopian tube associated with other genital malformations is presented.

Carcinoma of the cervix complicating a genital prolapse.

Although uterine prolapse and carcinoma of the uterine cervix are not rare events, their association is very uncommon. The treatment of cervical cancer has been protocolled, but the management of uterovaginal prolapse associated with carcinoma of the cervix is not standardised and therapy strategies vary considerably among authors. Our case reports a 74-year-old patient, admitted to the emergency department with an ulcerated prolapsed uterus.

Management of pregnancy after augmentation cystoplasty.

We report a case of successful pregnancy following augmentation ileocystoplasty in a patient with a neurogenic bladder dysfunction. A review of the literature reveals incidences of premature delivery and renal dysfunction. Careful urological monitoring of such patients should result in a successful pregnancy.

[Rhodococcus equi pneumonia in patients with AIDS].

Rhodococus equi infection is frequent in animals, but rare in humans. It usually appears as an opportunistic infection, occurring in clinical settings where a compromise of cellular immunity exists, such as in leukemia, neoplastic or transplanted patients. It is currently considered, as another opportunistic AIDS infection.

Effect of large doses of methylprednisolone on supratentorial intracranial tumors. A clinical and CAT scan evaluation.

We studied the action of high doses (500 mg/daily for 7 days) of methylprednisolone sodium succinate in 12 patients with supratentorial intracranial tumors. 10 tumors were malignant (5 gliomas and 5 metastases), and 2 benign (meningiomas). Clinical improvement ranged from moderate to marked after 24-48 h of therapy.
