Introduction: Rhabdomyolysis is a severe and debilitating condition that promotes muscle breakdown and is a relatively rare, not always diagnosed cause of acute renal failure (ARF) with an 8-20% reported incidence. Exertional rhabdomyolysis only appears in adult patients 24-48 h after strenuous activities as military basic training, weight lifting, and marathon running.

Anaesthesiologic protocol for kidney transplantation in two patients with Fabry Disease: a case series.

Fabry's Disease is a rare genetic syndrome, with a classic X-linked alpha -galactosidase A deficiency phenotype, responsible for glico-sphyngolypids metabolism impairment with clinical effects in several organs and functions. We describe the anaesthesiologic implications of two patients with Fabry disease who underwent a kidney transplantation from a deceased donor. We recommend careful preoperative evaluation, including cardiac sonography study and spirometry for Fabry disease patients, and according to our experience, we recommend advanced haemodynamic monitoring during surgery.

Integrating disaster preparedness and surge capacity in emergency facility planning.

The ability to adapt and utilize emergency facilities is a critical element in responding to surges resulting from man-made and natural events. The current stresses on emergency services throughout the country find few adequately prepared to effectively absorb a sudden increase in patients along with some of the potential special requirements, such as quarantining of epidemic patients and mass decontamination. This article reviews major findings of the federally funded ER One project, a research initiative that has described a number of facility strategies, which should be considered in planning new emergency facilities.

Background: Dual kidney transplantation (DKT) offers a safe way to face the organ shortage with good short-term and medium-term renal function. However, its application is limited by the longer operating time and the risk of surgical complication. This study reviews our results with DKT performed with an ipsilateral technique in terms of graft loss, graft and patient survival rates, and surgical complications.

In December 1999, widespread dieback of eggplant (Solanum melongena L., hybrid Mission Bell), grafted onto the interspecific hybrid Beaufort (Lycopersicon esculentum × Lycopersicon hirsutum) and on tomato hybrid Energy, was observed during four rootstock evaluation trials in greenhouses in Sicily, Italy. Dark brown to black, firm but sometimes fissured lesions, 1 to 20 cm long, were observed just above the grafting point.

Decreasing the cost of trauma care: a system of secondary inhospital triage.

The financial realities of the current health care arena make it imperative that deliverers of trauma care initiate programs that reduce the cost of trauma. Triage can be one process that attempts to attain this goal. Once patients are assigned to a Level I trauma center, it is possible to triage patients again to complement field triage.

Trauma nurse coordinator: three unique roles.

Three nursing positions were created to effectively manage the Trauma Nurse Coordinator (TNC) role and responsibilities: Trauma Director, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Trauma Researcher. By using this innovative approach, the quality of trauma care improved as shown by decreased complication rates, lengths of stay, and trauma costs. In addition, trauma referrals, research and education increased.
