Membrane-associated Ring-CH 5 (MARCH5) is a mitochondrial E3 ubiquitin ligase playing a key role in the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics. In mammals, MARCH5 negatively regulates mitochondrial antiviral signaling (MAVS) protein aggregation during viral infection and hampers downstream type I interferon signaling to prevent excessive immune activation. However, its precise functional role in the teleost immune system remains unclear.

Coordination-driven self-assembly has been extensively employed for the bottom-up construction of discrete metallo-macrocycles. However, the prevalent use of benzene rings as the backbone limits the formation of large metallo-macrocycles with more than six edges. Herein, by embedding metal nodes into the ligand backbone, we successfully regulated the ligand arm angle and assembled two giant heptagonal metallo-macrocycles with precise control.

Article Synopsis
  • The SOCS protein family includes eight members that act as feedback inhibitors for cytokine signaling, with specific roles of some proteins being less understood.
  • Phsocs5b, a SOCS member in the redlip mullet, is characterized by its specific structure and high expression in brain tissue; it plays a key role in the immune response and has demonstrated anti-viral properties.
  • Overexpression of Phsocs5b in FHM cells was shown to suppress viral infection, enhance pro-inflammatory cytokines, and may play a part in cell growth and migration, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target to bolster immune responses.

The fast-Fourier-transform-based filtering method for phase screen generation remains popular for numerical simulation of optical propagation through turbulence; however, these screens inherently underrepresent the spectral density at low wavenumbers. Here, the "Z-tilt" approach is explored to augment the spectral density at low wavenumbers by adding a random phase tilt, which is derived from the wavefront phase statistics of a Zernike polynomial basis. This approach is computationally efficient and can be applied to any statistically homogeneous and isotropic refractive index field.

Matured landfill leachate is complex in nature, hence, a single conventional treatment unit is insufficient to remove the contaminants of the leachate to achieve the discharge standards. Furthermore, high levels of organic matter, colour compounds, and iron-based materials form a dark black/brown colour in leachate which is not removed by the biological treatment units. Hence, an Anoxic-Oxic Membrane Bioreactor coupled with a tertiary adsorption unit composed of crosslinked-protonated chitosan was tested for effective removal of the colour of the permeate.

Viperin is an important virus-induced protein in animals that negatively participates in RNA viral replication and transcription. The reactive machinery of viperin suggests that it produces a regulatory molecule ddhCTP, which may affect immune regulation. In this study, we investigated the expression pattern of viperin in larval and adult stages of zebrafish by whole-mount in situ hybridization and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR).

Aim: Alcohol is a commonly co-ingested compound during self-poisoning with pesticides. Clinical experiences suggest alcohol co-ingestion (or withdrawal) makes patient management more difficult after self-poisoning and may contribute to poor clinical outcomes. We aimed to systematically review the world literature to explore the relationship between alcohol co-ingestion and outcome in pesticide self-poisoning.
