In 14 healthy volunteers (8 M and 6 F), aged 19 to 33 years, serum and salivary concentrations of ofloxacin, administered in a single oral dose of 300 mg, were measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the microbiological agar diffusion method. The serum peak was observed at hour 1 (2.61 +/- 0.

However, contamination by a single micro-organism during the test may lead to the inappropriate blocking of the release of the batch. An alternative method using solid media for culturing the membranes used in the filtration was therefore sought.

Desensitization phenomena may be induced either by repeated addition of S-14 or long lasting contact between S-14 and platelets.

Japanese authors have described a procedure for the sex determination of human hair roots without epithelial sheath, paraffin embedded and fluorescent stained for cortical cell nuclei Y or X sex chromatins. This method however is not sufficiently practical for forensic science purposes: it is difficult and not guaranteed to obtain suitable longitudinal hair sections with possible loss of evidence particularly serious when the questioned hair is only one. The authors, researching Y-bodies with Quinacrine, present an alternative technique of preparation of specimens without embedding which is simple and quick, reproducible and satisfying in results and that avoids loss of material.

Among the various substances utilized, 10% formalin and 30% hypertonic solution caused gross and microscopic lesions compatible with less advanced forms of sclerosing cholangitis. The authors present their hypothesis on the development of SC in operated hydatid cysts of the liver.

This can be achieved by the intraluminal implantation of a soft, pliable tube above the anastomotic site. Previous clinical and experimental data have indicated that the intracolonic bypass procedure can protect an anastomosis in the presence of maximal colonic loading, gross dehiscences, or fecal peritonitis.

The prevalence of protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) and micronutrient deficiency (MND) at the time of admission and discharge from hospital was evaluated in 91 patients consecutively admitted to the Surgery Clinic of the University Hospital of Rome. Anthropometric parameters and circulating levels of vitamins (A, E, C, B1, and B2) and visceral proteins [retinol-binding protein (RBP, prealbumin (PA), and transferrin] were measured. Twenty-one patients (23%) had moderate to severe PCM, and 70 patients (77%) had normal nutritional status (NNS) at admission.

All the patients were subject to preoperative and postoperative medical therapy with mebendazole (50 mg/kg/daily). The percentage of living scolices in hydatid fluid obtained during surgery, evaluated microscopically and by mice inoculation, was lower in patients treated medically than in patients operated on without pre and postoperative medical therapy.

It can be asserted that a new era in its surgical therapy started with Bassini. As many difficulties exist in comprehending the archaic language used a century ago by the Italian surgeon, the principles of his technique are analysed.

Dakin's solution and a chloroxydizer in a hypertonic sodium chloride solution were tested for bacteriological and clinical effectiveness and stability. No real difference in effectiveness was observed between the two products; however, only the chloroxydizer showed satisfactory stability at 150 days under the test storage conditions.

Seventeen patients including 11 patients with rectal carcinoma, two with diffuse polyposis involving the rectum, three with ulcerative colitis, and one with Crohn's disease of the colon and rectum have undergone operation by this method in the last 4 years. Clinical follow-up (mean 22 months) of these patients has demonstrated normal and continence for feces and gas.
