The effects of listening on speaker and listener while talking about character strengths: an open science school-wide collaboration.

Listening is understood to be a foundational element in practices that rely on effective conversations, but there is a gap in our understanding of what the effects of high-quality listening are on both the speaker and listener. This registered report addressed this gap by training one group of participants to listen well as speakers discuss their character strengths, allowing us to isolate the role relational listening plays in strengths-based conversations. Participants were paired and randomly assigned to a high-quality listening (experimental) or moderate-quality listening (comparison) condition manipulated through a validated video-based training.

Emerging Detection of Hexahydrocannabinol in Driver Saliva: Preliminary Data.

Introduction: Hexahydrocannabinol or HHC has recently appeared on the Internet and in cannabidiol (CBD) stores in various forms. Although the abuse and dependence potential of HHC consumption has not yet been established, HHC has been reported by consumers to have effects similar to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and has been classified as narcotics in France since June 12, 2023.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of all cases of oral fluid samples collected from drivers by traffic police officers and sent to our laboratory to confirm the presence of illicit substances between June 12, 2023 and December 31, 2023.

Outside-in hair contamination by blood containing opiates and opioids.

Hair analysis for drugs has become extensively used for forensic investigation in recent years. To best interpret hair drug content in post-mortem conditions, the extent of external contamination by biological fluids, such as blood, must be taken into account to avoid false positive results. The present study evaluated opiates and opioids incorporation into hair from blood containing different concentrations of morphine (MOR), 6-mono-acetyl morphine (6-AM), codeine (COD), dihydrocodeine (DHC), tramadol (TRA), oxycodone (OXY), methadone (MET), 2-ethylidene-1,5-dimethyl-3,3- diphenyl pyrrolidine (EDDP), buprenorphine (BUP) and norbuprenorphine (NBUP).

Prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease after pancreatic surgery in a historical Belgian cohort and review of the literature.

Background And Objectives: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been reported as a complication after pancreatic surgery. The aim of this study is to assess this phenomenon in a Belgian population, specifically in a period in time when less perioperative chemotherapy was given.

Methods: We performed a retrospective monocentric cohort study with 124 selected patients who underwent pancreatic surgery - pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), distal pancreatectomy (DP) or total pancreatectomy - between 2005 and 2014.

A Preliminary Phenomenological Exploration of Experiences of the Empty Pelvis Syndrome Derived From a Modified-Delphi: The Price of Survival Following Pelvic Exenteration for Advanced Pelvic Cancer.

Objective: The empty pelvis syndrome (EPS) is common after pelvic exenteration (PE), causing fluid collections, bowel obstruction, perineal sinuses, and fistulas. The best approach to fill the pelvis to mitigate this remains controversial, and the impact of EPS on health-related quality of life (HrQoL) is unknown. This study is the first to begin to explore lived-experiences of EPS complications.

Team-based learning (TBL) curriculum combined with video vignettes improves performance of undergraduate medical students on OSCE compared with TBL alone.

Background: Clinical practitioners think of frequent causes of diseases first rather than expending resources searching for rare conditions. However, it is important to continue investigating when all common illnesses have been discarded. The effect of consultations performed by specialised nurses or advanced nurse practitioners on patient and organisational outcomes in patients with complex health conditions: An umbrella review.

Background: Policymakers and researchers often suggest that nurses may play a crucial role in addressing the evolving needs of patients with complex conditions, by taking on advanced roles and providing nursing consultations. Nursing consultations vary widely across settings and countries, and their activities range from complementing to substituting traditional physician-led consultations or usual care.

Objective: This study was aimed at describing the effects of nursing consultations with patients with complex conditions in any setting on patient outcomes (quality of life, physical status, psychosocial health, health behaviour, medication adherence, mortality, anthropometric and physiological outcomes, and patient satisfaction) and organisational outcomes (health resource use and costs).

The Role of Researcher for Advanced Practice Nurses in Oncology: Challenges and Lessons Learned.

Objectives: To reflect on current practice analyses regarding the role of advanced practice nurse (APN) researcher in oncology, and report on the challenges that were faced and lessons we have learned when intensively working with APNs on doing research within the domain of oncology.

Methods: Discussions with APNs supervised by or who collaborated with academics in nursing science during the past 10 years on doing research within the domain of oncology.

Results: Several misconceptions exist regarding the role of APNs as researchers.

Advanced Practice Nursing Titles and Roles in Cancer Care: A Scoping Review.

Objectives: Advanced practice nursing roles in cancer care are diverse and exist across the cancer care continuum. However, the titles used and the scope of practice differ across countries. This diversity is likely to be misleading to patients and influence nurses' contribution to health care.

How much do we know about nursing care delivery models in a hospital setting? A mapping review.

To deal with the upcoming challenges and complexity of the nursing profession, it is deemed important to reflect on our current organization of care. However, before starting to rethink the organization of nursing care, an overview of important elements concerning nursing care organization, more specifically nursing models, is necessary. The aim of this study was to conduct a mapping review, accompanied by an evidence map to map the existing literature, to map the field of knowledge on a meta-level and to identify current research gaps concerning nursing models in a hospital setting.

The Association Between C-Reactive Protein Levels and Pediatric Appendicitis Score and the Severity of Appendicitis in Children.

Background: Acute appendicitis is a common cause of abdominal pain leading to emergent abdominal surgery in children. C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammatory marker typically elevated in acute appendicitis, and Pediatric Appendicitis Score (PAS), a clinical scoring system used for the diagnosis of appendicitis, have the potential to predict the severity of inflammation of the appendix. This may be useful in helping the physician make a treatment plan prior to surgery.

Illuminating the nutrition-related policy-practice gaps in colorectal cancer survivorship.

Purpose: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the three most commonly diagnosed cancers globally, after breast and lung cancer, with an estimated 2 million new cases each year, comprising ten per cent of all cancers worldwide. CRC has a complex aetiology associated with several nutrition-related risk factors. Cancer survivors frequently report alterations to their dietary habits and nutritional intake, with related adverse impacts on health-related quality of life (QOL).

In vitro stability study of 10 beta-lactam antibiotics in human plasma samples.

Background And Objectives: Beta-lactam antibiotics are reported for some of them to be subject to a rapid degradation in infusion solutions and in human blood samples. However, the current data of stability available in blood samples are limited to a few number of beta-lactam antibiotics, and the methodology of the corresponding studies may be discussed. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the stability of 10 beta-lactam antibiotics in human plasma samples.

Carbonate compensation depth drives abyssal biogeography in the northeast Pacific.

Abyssal seafloor communities cover more than 60% of Earth's surface. Despite their great size, abyssal plains extend across modest environmental gradients compared to other marine ecosystems. However, little is known about the patterns and processes regulating biodiversity or potentially delimiting biogeographical boundaries at regional scales in the abyss.

Objectives: To provide an overview of three consecutive stages involved in the processing of quantitative research data (ie, data management, analysis, and interpretation) with the aid of practical examples to foster enhanced understanding.

Data Sources: Published scientific articles, research textbooks, and expert advice were used.

Conclusion: Typically, a considerable amount of numerical research data is collected that require analysis.

How to Write a Comprehensive and Informative Research Abstract.

Objectives: This article provides practical guidance on developing a comprehensible abstract, including those required for funding applications, conferences, and publication. In addition, we discuss and demonstrate the practicalities of editing and revising an abstract for conference or peer review and identify emerging formats that may be more relevant to nurses and researchers.

Data Sources: This article has been informed by literature and the coauthors' respective experiences of preparing and reviewing abstracts for publication and conference presentation.

Intervention pathways for low anterior resection syndrome after sphincter-saving rectal cancer surgery: A systematic scoping review.

Aim: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) has a large impact on patients' quality of life. Several heterogeneous intervention pathways are suggested in the literature. The steps and timing of the different steps in the pathways are unclear.

Experiences of patients with cancer and their relatives confronted with COVID-19 related delay or change in care: A qualitative study.

Aims: To provide in-depth insight into how patients and their relatives experienced change or delay in cancer treatment and care due to COVID-19.

Design: A qualitative study including semi-structured interviews with patients with cancer and their relatives.

Methods: Between July and October 2020, 42 patients who were confronted with a change or delay in cancer treatment or care, and 11 relatives were interviewed.

Quality of Life after Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction: Surgery remains essential in the curative treatment of esophageal cancer (EC), but it is known for its high morbidity and impaired health-related QoL. Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) was introduced to reduce surgical trauma and improve QoL.

Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate long-term HRQoL after MIE in comparison with the general population.

Rat synovial tissue and blood rapamycin pharmacokinetics after intra-articular injection of free solution or nanoparticles vs free rapamycin intravenous shot.

Intra-articular (IA) injection of a chondroprotective candidate may delay the osteoarthritis (OA) course, but its rapid absorption into systemic circulation may limit efficacy and produce untoward effects. We compared the pharmacokinetics (PK) of IA rapamycin injected as sustained release in nanoparticles (NPs) versus a free rapamycin suspension in the rat knee compared to an intravenous (IV) free rapamycin shot taken as a reference. Rats received either a single IV injection of free rapamycin (10 µM) or an IA of free or NPs-loaded rapamycin.
